Aidan is teething HORRIBLY!!! He hates milk-even if I add ovaltine he chucks the cup at me, and isn’t even drinking his formula anymore-maybe like 16 oz a day or something (and he’s not even suposed to be ON it anymore) so that leaves water, which he is obviously sick of drinking, and juice. I can’t find any juice that won’t annoy his reflux-which is still there and not so great b/c of the teething, I’m going to take him to the doc after Christmas to ask about the reflux b/c we are running out of prevacid-she wanted him off at a year.
Anyway, I’ve tried pediasure (stuff is nasty) and pedialyte (he hates it). His eating is just fine, so I’m not too worried. IT’s just annoying that he will go all day with hardly anything to drink (I decided both the cup and bottle hurt his gums). Maybe I’ll give him watered down gatorade, I used to give it to Austin all the time when he refused to drink anything else…..It would be so nice if he would just take the damn cup of whole milk, smile and chug it down!!!!!!!
December 19, 2006 at 9:34 pm #20756AnonymousInactiveI went through this for MONTHS with Myles. He gave up his bottle at 7 months!! I kept him hydrated enough by adding lots of breast milk or formula to his foods. He still eats oatmeal every morning made with 7-8 ounces of milk because he won’t drink milk from a cup and only drinks small amounts of water each day from a cup. I still spoon feed him 4 ounces of milk or formula once each day and he takes a night time bottle.
For now mabye try adding some juice or milk to his solids. I did that for months with Myles.
16 ounces isn’t too bad, really. Myles is only taking in about 17-18 ounces per day.
Teething sucks, doesn’t it? I wish babies could teethe without pain.
December 20, 2006 at 7:35 am #20770AnonymousInactiveOhhhh ok it’s so hard to know how much is ok! I nursed Austin and never knewhow much he was taking in-I guess ignorance is bliss!!! I’ll start adding it to his oatmeal (DUH that never even occurd to me). I bought goodstart last night hoping he’d try something new (and WITH lactose) and he wouldn’t drink it, I’m going to try again before his nap.
I bought this stuff that he drank this morning-gerber fruit splashers, so at least I found something he’ll drink!

He doesn’t drink much but it makes me feel better knowing that he is getting all the nutrients that he needs. When we switched from Neocate to Goodstart we had to do it slowly because of the taste.
December 20, 2006 at 2:00 pm #20789AnonymousInactiveI am having a similar experience with Brianna..I am trying to wean her off Breastmilk, but she doesn’t really like the whole milk either! I have talked to a lot of mom’s that said don’t worry about the number of ounces..but it is hard. I Know she is drinking less than when she breastfed, becuase she doesn’t have nearly the same wet diapers. She is teething badly too. I do add milk to Briannas cereal in the AM (I upped the amount I used to put in to help with the fluids) and Brianna will ususally drink 3oz or so of the milk in the AM (I guess when she is that thirsty she will drink anything). But other than that, she does get water, but I doubt she even drinks 4 oz of that a day. My friend has a baby that self weaned at a year, AND won’t eat or drink hardly anything. She panicked about it, but the Ped said not to worry, just to watch her and eventually she started drinking things again. Have you tried white grape juice? I read something about it being good on the digestive tract (don’t hold me to that being true…I can’t remember where the article came from). I am going to buy some of this for Brianna to try. Good luck!
December 20, 2006 at 2:52 pm #20798AnonymousInactiveI just bought some white grape yesterday with the gerber fruit splasher things (which he LOVES). I bought goodstart and he won’t touch it, does it taste that much different from other formulas? He is on Similac lacto-free (with an ounce of milk in it). Anyway, I’m not going to make a big deal out of it I guess, just make sure he eats a lot of yogurt! He LOVES the drinkable probiotic yogurt things, and sometimes I can get him to eat cheese….
December 20, 2006 at 7:02 pm #20807AnonymousInactiveMyles hated the Good Start until he got used to it.
Will he eat broccoli? Supposeldy it has lots of calcium. Myles loves it (pureed).
December 20, 2006 at 8:36 pm #20812AnonymousInactiveshane is only 6 mos. and is not drinking too much either! i think its because of teething as well… he will eat and eat, but when i offer him the bottle he drink maybe 3 or 4 ounces at a time and thats it
! soooo.. i asked the doc today, and he said to make sure we put 2 ounces in every meal so that he will get 6 that way at least (which you guys already know)but jill, why do you want to get him off the similac and on to goodstart? just wondering..
December 21, 2006 at 11:25 am #20846AnonymousInactiveWhat type of drinakable yogurt are you giving Aidan? Brianna loves yogurt and maybe that would be good for us too. b’s mom2006-12-21 11:25:27
December 21, 2006 at 9:18 pm #20880AnonymousInactive(goodstart is cheaper, and a I saw that some of the little guys on here did good on it ), but I realized since he isn’t drinking all that much, it really doesn’t matter if the similac is more $$, it’s lasting a LOT longer than it used to!!-I just started giving him those probiotic drinkable yogurts..ohh man now I can’t think of the brand..Dannon maybe?? I was afraid they’d irritate his tummy, but he was fine. I will tell you this do NOT let her try to drink them herself-LOL I’m so used to tossing my 7 year old one that I opened up Aidans and handed it to him….our whole kitchen was coated within 5 mins!!! oops. He’ll also drink any other kind of drinkable yogurt, but I like the fact that the one we have is probiotic. I’m just ignoreing the milk issue right now-I’ll have to try broccoli I think I actually have some in the freezer!!!
December 22, 2006 at 12:50 pm #20901AnonymousInactiveLet me know how Aidan does with the Brocolli…I haven’t given it to Brianna becuase of the horrible experience she had with gas when she was little.
December 22, 2006 at 8:37 pm #20915AnonymousInactiveno problem, I was going to give it to him tonight, but we had an impromptu family night when my sister and nephews came over and I forgot! I am a bit worried about the gas thing, luckily I still have the rx gas drops the idiot GI prescribed for Aidan because she determined he was “colicky, a fussy baby”(yes she made it to the top of my “people who are morons” list).
December 22, 2006 at 9:33 pm #20921AnonymousInactiveI wouldn’t worry too much about the gas at this age. They’ll probably just pass a lot of gas after eating broccoli. Myles does, but it doesn’t bother him at all. I think it’s more of a problem for younger babies. Hopefully they will both like broccoli and do well with it.
December 23, 2006 at 7:14 am #20931AnonymousInactiveJill, our ped and all of the feeding specialists we’ve seen have actually told us not to go over 16 oz of formula or milk a day after a year as it can impact their eating. In babies who eat normally, I don’t believe this is an issue- Sarah always took much more than that and ate well. I’m only telling you so that you don’t feel the need to worry about his fluid intake. 16 oz a day is enough at a year if he’s eating solids, especially since it’s formula which is more calorie dense and nutritionally complete.
December 23, 2006 at 11:24 pm #20972AnonymousInactiveahhhh ok ty Lori, I feel much better now. I nursed Austin so I never knew how much he was drinking, with this formula thing, I feel like I have no idea what I’m, doing-LOL and his ped is great but not wonderful at mentioning things like that!!! I’m not sure I’ll ever get him to drink milk, I had been mixing just an ounce into his bottles- he only drinks 3- and that’s when he quit drinking them. When I took the milk out, he started drinking them again…picky little guy.
