InactiveOh Christine! How awful!!! I hope your little ones start to feel better soon.
Hang in there!!! Is Myles walking everywhere now or does he prefer to crawl still? Does pedialyte cause gas? She had about 10oz of it today and was a tooting machine tonight! Unfortunately she was uncomfortable because of it. Her poor belly looked like a starving child from a 3rd world country…very bloated. I kept massaging it and pushing her legs up and WHOA the gas kept coming. Or could the gas be a sign of recovery? Poor babies!
Still no sign of chicken pox…but I know the incubation period is a few days/weeks.

InactiveHi Amy,
Myles hopefully is turning the corner. He still has severe diarrhea, but he slept all night without a diarrhea or vomitting episode and he’s in great spirits this morning. Hopefully we’re near the end of this thing now.
He still prefers to crawl….and he’s really lost nearly a week of practicing his walking because he’s been so sick. But I’m sure he’ll be up and at it again soon.
I do think gas is common when recovering from an intestinal event. I remember once when Liza was about 15 months old we were shopping a few days after she had recovered from a stomach bug. She was in the shopping cart and began passing gas so loudly that no one could believe it was coming from a baby. It was embarrassing because I’m sure everyone thought it was me.

InactiveJust found this post – hope Sarah and Myles are feeling better. Marisa too is
currently on amox for a sinus and ear infection and we all have rotavirus…
Ugh.
How long do the feeding strikes normally last for? Marisa had already lost
half a pound in the past month and I’m sure she’s up to a pound by now. She
just has NO appetite still. Just trying to keep her hydrated for now…

InactiveKaren,
Isn’t it awful?? I never realized how miserable having a sick baby could be! I feel so helpless when she’s sick! I think we had a mild case of rotavirus. I thought it might have been the antibiotic at first…but I think it was a virus after all. Sarah’s feeding strike lasted about 2.5 days and that was long enough for me! I was so worried about her! I could only get her to take about 10oz a day total and maybe some solids. Just try keeping her hydrated…I know that’s easier said than done sometimes! Is Marisa eating any foods at all or is she refusing all of them?December 21, 2006 at 7:28 am #20826Anonymous
InactiveMarisa was already on a feeding strike when all this happened – she’s
basically been sick with one thing after another since her immunizations 5
weeks ago. She had just started eating nicely again (well nicely for her) two
days before this new batch hit. Now she hasn’t had anything other than a
little jarred fruit and a few cheerios since Saturday. Luckily she’s been having
about 12-14 ounces/day of lactose free milk but that’s a struggle too and
she’s looking so thin. We all got the rotavirus really badly though and she
had it compounded of course by the ear and sinus infection. Now she hasn’t
had diarrhea or vomiting in about 32 hours (knock wood) – last episode was
about 12am Tuesday night/Wednesday morning when she woke with a
coughing fit and then had vomiting/diarrhea at same time and then threw
up again in the bath, refused to drink anything and at 1 am finally let me
give her a jar of Earth’s Best apples/bananas to at least get fluids from that.knb182006-12-21 7:56:18

InactiveOh how miserable! I hope that she feels better soon! (by Christmas!) It sounds like she’s been through enough already!!!

InactiveOh, poor Marisa!
Myles was so sick with rotavirus for six days. He lost 2 lbs because he wasn’t eating and whatever I did get into him he either pooped out or threw up. Finally on the 7th day he turned the corner and the diarrhea and vomitting stopped but it was a few days before his appetite returned. I hope Marisa starts eating again soon. It’s always such a bummer when they are doing so well and you take them to the doctor for well baby check-ups and shots and end up with a sick baby. It happens to us all the time, although this time I’m pretty sure we got it from church because we’d really been home all week.
Anyway, I hope Marisa is back to herself very soon.

InactiveThanks guys. Still no appetite – her spirits are returning but still getting so
tired and won’t eat but a little jarred fruit. I’d guess she’s lost about a pound
by now – and she has slow metabolism, which is saving her I guess. We
celebrate Hanukkah, actually, which is now, so it’s been a bit of a bummer,
plus DH is off this week and we wanted to do fun vacation stuff, but…

InactiveNow we’re heading back to the doctor – not sure the amox is working for
the ear infection… poor baby – and we’re exhausted.

InactiveI just saw this – apologies. Hope everyone’s feeling better!
Karen-Ian just went through a stomach virus and my husband was in the hospital last night because of it (they said it was rotavirus). Ian had it for two full days but no diarrhea just vomiting. It’s now been a week and although spirits are great, eating is still not up to par unfortunately (although better every day). I’ve been putting jarred pears, apples, etc in the freezer and then giving them to him when they’re almost frozen. Kind of a treat for him. Also, rice cakes if I just leave them in the living room while he plays, if I eat them, he wants them. Hope it works! This is another thread but did you ever call the OT about Marisa’s food aversions? Also, amoxocillin never worked for us. Augmentum is just awful on the belly, but z-pac’s seem to be magic.
This has been a nasty time for stomachs! I fear we’ll just keep giving it back to one another. Hang in there!

InactiveGot back from the doctor – turns out the inner ear infection is getting
better from the amox but she has an “external” ear infection/irritation in
same ear and needs drops. So hopefully that will help.
Tracy – sorry to hear about Ian and your DH – we were all SO sick with the
rotavirus – my appetite is mostly back now, DH’s is partially there but she
just won’t eat really at all. Today she had 13 ounces milk, 1 jar apples/
banans, half jar apples/chicken and two bites of a Nutrigrain waffle. She’s
still quite cranky too but that may be related to the ear.
I’ve been playing phone tag with the OT Thais recommended. But we may
need to also switch pediatricians – we really like ours but it’s getting way
too hard to keep running out to Staten Island every time. Do you like
yours? Where is he? I’ll ask Thais too.

InactiveDr Christopher Clemens at Cornell – not sure he is taking new patients though but just check. He is young, very thorough, trained at Kennedy Krieger which is part of Jhn Hopkins. A no-nonsense guy who responds to email very quickly. he is at 201 E 80th street

InactiveSo sorry to hear that Marisa is so sick, Thais. Stomach bugs are really going around here too. Sorry Marisa had such a crummy Chanukah- Hailey didn’t care about it too much, but Sarah had a blast this year.
Hope she’s feeling better soon, and that the OT can help you with the feeding. The feeding aversions are exhausting!

InactiveGlad Sarah had fun!
She seems to be on the mend but the cough/phlegm is still pretty bad and
maybe her tummy is upset from the amox because she’s really whiny and
not eating – and the whining/crankiness increases after a dose… Poor girl…
