InactiveFirst, let me say Ian is doing so well! We couldn’t be happier with his progress-eating, sleeping, happy, teeth! (Starting with a positive). No digestive reactions to anything-which is good because that is where his problems have always been in the past. Eating good variation of different foods although nothing major like wheat, dairy, etc. Still on Elecare and prevacid.
HOWEVER, he developed minor-really minor-little patch of eczema on his right cheek about 3 weeks ago. It kind of came and went regardless of foods and never spread. Well now it’s on his other cheek and chin. Small little patches and I think it’s eczema-little white or reddish bumps. I’m really confused as we haven’t even really been trialing anything new-just working with texture. I read his food diary and the little patch on the right started around the time of corn trial but again came and went regardless of food and he certainly isn’t eating corn every day. I read some kids develop it at this age and it goes away by around 18 months. Is it always food related? If yes, should I aggressively try to figure out which food-meaning is it a minor normal reaction or is he at risk for developing an allergy if he keeps consuming it (IF food related)? Or could it just be teething/heat? He is rubbing his face alot and it did start around the time he started self feeding and getting teeth. Maybe just drool irritation. My dh and I both are pink people-very sensitive.
Thanks. Just want to know if this is maybe just a normal baby thing.

InactiveI do think it could be teething and heat and sensitive skin issues. Marisa has
been getting some odd rashes lately as well but don’t seem related to any
food in particular. But you could always try to cut out corn for 2 weeks and
see if it goes away if you want to test. But I’m glad to hear he’s doing so well
– we really want to see you guys soon!

InactiveIf that is his only reaction, I don’t think I would cut out the food just yet. I think I would cautiously keep it in his diet and then see if it clears up. Sometimes I think they just have to get used to some foods. It also may be something other than food, or even just a little touch of eczema.

InactiveThanks guys. It’s just disturbing. For example, it looks really angry today and he hasn’t had corn in 3 days. It wouldn’t get worse would it? Skin doesn’t seem dry and no new foods lately. V. strange. Otherwise, he seems really happy/normal. Maybe some kind of external reaction? Although nothing really new there either..

InactiveWe have eczema here and there and his dermatologist said that it really is not always related to food allergies. He said that eczema is really sensitive skin and that if 1 or both parents have it then most likely the child will have it. He said it may be enviromental allergies, food allergies, or just weather conditions. I wouldn’t really worry too much unless something else is going on.

InactiveYes, that’s what I’ve been told as well. All three of my children have eczema from time to time. DH had it as a child and still has flare ups from time to time. I have very dry skin, not really eczema, just dry and itchy. Eczema is related to dry skin/sensitive skin and I’ve been told it’s not always food that causes flare ups. Sometimes it’s heat or sun, sometimes soaps. My kids have flare ups from time to time and I rarely figure out what caused it.

Our doctor recommends Cortizone Ointment (not cream) for flare ups. She says to use a thin layer twice daily for no more than two weeks. I always seem improvement in a few days.
I’m happy to hear that Ian is doing so well.

InactiveThanks Sarah and Christine. I do feel better now. I had called the ped and the nurse practitioner wants him to come in tomorrow. They’re being extra careful with his history (which I like) but sigh-have to go in.
Darn! I had just bought the .5% cream. Christine-did your doctor say what percentage? So funny as Ian has always had the most gorgeous skin-kind of freaked me out to see it go the other way all of a sudden. Well, at least I don’t look so haggered next to him anymore-LOL

InactiveLet us know what the doctor says – I’m sure he’ll have his beautiful
complexion back in no time. And it’s great all the things you posted he’s
doing!

InactiveCortizone 1% Ointment.
I hope his appt goes well. I’m sure they’ll probably tell you it’s nothing to worry about, but it doesn’t hurt to go in just to be sure.

Inactivei think you want the .5% for a young child—-and cream is better than ointment. i’ve been using prescription steroid creams for over 30 years and definitely prefer cream over ointment.
alot of young children just get rashes that come and go for no apparent reason.

InactiveWe were told 1% first then if that didn’t work we have a script for 2% but 2% cannot be used on faces and privates.
