InactiveSo just when i thought the meds were starting to work my daughter got a cold and is manically chewing on things

She has had the cold for 1 week now and her reflux is really bad again. When babies are ill or teething do the meds not work or do you have to increase them ?
I thought it might have been something i ate but its not getting better and she is all congested. As if sleep wasn’t rare enough in this house now she is coughing and waking herself up !
How long do colds normally last as this is the first one she has ever had!

InactiveYes, reflux tends to worsen with colds and with teething. Some moms and docs even increase reflux meds during colds.
As for how long does a cold last….typically they last a week to ten days with my three. Sometimes we’re fortunate and it passes in 4-5 days, but most of the time it’s at least a week.
If they have a cough I usually ask the doctor for some a prescription for cough medicine to use only at night. That way we all get some sleep.
I hope she’s feeling better soon.

InactiveSorry to hear that she has a cold. Ours also last about a week and a half (except for the permanent day care variety). And the reflux was always so much worse during the cold. We actually never found that upping the meds helped, but rather found that controlling the dripping mucous was the only thing that gave her some relief. I also tried to get the prescription cold meds, but my doc wouldn’t do it. I’ve found that keeping her upright while sleeping so the snot doesn’t drip into the throat stopped some of the gagging etc, and we also are a big fan of the benelyn plug in vapourizers and vaporub. Not that they solve the problem at all… Hang in there.

Inactivedo you have one of those baby safe teethers? won’t help the cold, but if you put an ice cube in it it might help the teething!!-Not sure what she weighs, but at 6 months Aidan was heavy enough to take a half dose of otc infant cold meds. His Doc always tells me to use bendryl to dry him up at night when he has a cold.

InactiveThe meds are less effective because a normal reaction of the body to pain or discomfort is an increase in acid production…and there is an increase in mucous and that may make their stomachs uncomfortable as well. will your doctor give you a prescription for zantac for bad days? We always supplemented during illnesses but we did not increase PPI dose. The other thing that you can do is add mylanta supreme so that she is a bit more comfortable.
Lots of saliine drops, being upright, vaporrub (we use the vicks babyrub or something like that) and put it on matthew’s chest and back adn also vaporiser with some eucalyptus….
