Inactivehi ladies,
iam going crazy and i would love some tips.. i am an emotional eater
i have managed to stay in shape (well i need to lose some more, but iam not too far form my pre-pregnancy wt
), but lately with all Kendra drs appointments, and the stress of keeping her from pulling her NG tube out (she had done it three times now and the last one i have to put back in and i was upset, poor baby) and her upcoming peg sergury iam an emotional rollercoaster. i am constantly fighting the urge to go to the pantry or the fridge
i have self control (really most of the time, but it’s getting harder to do so right now).I don’t buy junk food very often to avoid temptation and what i do eat is not junk food, just have a lot of carbs (like yogurt, bread, and yes some sweeties too) you know carbs and wt don’t mix well.
any tips??
P.S please don’t think i am crazy

InactiveGosh you’re not crazy at all!!! I am the exact same way! I actually stopped doing weight watchers about two weeks ago because of all of the stress in my life right now. It was just too much to keep up with. I DO plan to return to my diet once my life balances out again (hopefully early June) but it IS difficult to stay focused on being healthy when there are other issues.
Sorry I don’t have any advice…just wanted to let you know that I’m in the same boat!

InactiveThe girls aren’t causing any unusual stress right now, but state testing is coming up in three weeks at school, so there is tons of work stress for me right now. I think that’s why I keep falling off the weight watchers wagon when it has worked so well for me in the past. So, I’m right there with you.

InactiveNo, you’re definitely not crazy. Emotional eating is really very common. I have the extreme of emotional eating, an actual addiction to food.
Since your problem is new and seems to be related to the specific stress you are under right now, I think it’s very likely that you will be able to overcome it, especially since you are addressing it already. I’m no expert so I can’t give you any real psychological advice but I can give you some tips that I’ve learned while researching my problem.1. Try to stick to high fiber, whole grain carbs, and avoid white sugar and white flour products. These white carbs have no nutritional value and they cause your blood sugar to rise quickly and then drop suddenly so that you end up being hungry an hour later.
2. Eat protein for breakfast. Protein takes longer to digest and keeps you satisfied for longer periods of time. A small amount of protein at every meal helps me to feel more satisfied and less hungry all day.
3. Find someone to talk to about your stress and your feelings, and/or try journaling. Getting those feelings out will help you to avoid dealing with them by eating.
4. Try to squeeze in some exercise. Exercise releases endorphins in the brain which help you feel better emotionally.
It’s great that you are addressing this so soon and not waiting until it becomes a bigger problem.

How’s Kendra doing?

InactiveKim,
i hope you can get enough time to get your work done. i was always stress out in school and college! boy iam glad done with it
Amy,
i hope things slow down soon for you. uhgg i hate stress.
Christine,
thank you for all the advice. Unfortunately, exercise is not posible right now.
i do not have any really close freinds to talk about my feelings. It’s sad i know. i do journal, but lately i just been keeping a dairy of kendra’s food and writing down reminders of phone calls to dr’s office and house stuff! i do the south beach diet after a period of stress is gone and usually i do good, but i hardly have time to cook now.
i am just mad that iam thinking about food when iam not hungry. it’s not really bad right now, but i just wish is not an issue
anyways, thank you evreyone. maybe i should put a lock on my fridge and pantry, that way i will think it’s too much work to unlock it and i’ll descorauge to go to it

Chistine,
kendra continuse to gain wt on the tube. she is very happy and is starting to show her cute personality, instead of crying all the time. she’ll go for PEG placement on the 27th. iam worry about sergury, but excited b/c she won’t have the tube on her face anymore. the irritated skin will be gone and the fear of her pulling it out as well. She is also trying food, even if it’s not a lot. thanks for asking.

InactiveI am definately an emotional eater. I know it
. Sometimes I beat it sometimes I don’t. I think the advice from a professional would be to address the emotional issue…but I’ve never been able to do it…never. So you are definately not alone. Everytime I have a fight with dh I pig out.But a couple of tips…popped corn and chewing gum. Not together of course
. You can eat a ton of microwaved popcorn (no butter, sugar etc) for few calories and it will keep you occupied long enough to distract you and if you are chewing gum your mouth is occupied!April 21, 2007 at 8:40 am #31099Anonymous
InactiveTherese,
what a great idea that is!. now that i think about it, i am always buying gum and chewimg one often, maybe that’s why i have not been eating more. i’ll try that. thanks a lot.

InactiveIt seems to me like something always happens to help me keep things in perspective, and this post just helped me to do that.

When I put state testing in my post, Leo assumed that I meant that I was taking tests, when I actually meant that I’m worried because I’m responsible for all of the math testing in my building, and I have 300 students getting reading to take tests at the end of May. But… I’m glad that she misunderstood me because she reminded me that at this point three years ago, I was finishing my last two classes for grad school, working full time (worrying about these same stupid tests), coaching synchronized swimming 4 days a week, and trying to “take it easy” to avoid bed rest. Looking at it that way, life’s not so bad right now.

InactiveI don’t have any advice to give. Just to say your not alone. I have an aquaitance (sp) whose 4 yr old son is an emotional eater. That is the first I had heard of such a young child being an emotional eater. Also, I don’t have any close friends either. I have friends, but I feel like I’m bugging them all the time. They are all so busy. To me a close friend is someone you talk on the phone to often and get together with often. I am involved in a moms group with my church, but we haven’t been getting together because everyone is too busy. I need the adult interaction. It give me energy and a high.
I think that is one reason I am obsessed with this forum. The other is because I really want to do all I can to help moms going through this stressful situation. Okay, all that to just say your not alone. I feel very lonely and so wish I had family that lived closer or a close girlfriend that I could go out and hang with, with our kids of course.

InactiveI’m a terrible emotional eater. I have gone crazy binging because of all the stress from Hailey’s feeding problems. I try to keep things under control, but it’s been very hard.
I don’t have any other advice, just sympathy.
BTW, glad to hear that Kendra is doing well gaining on the tube! That’s great!
