My dd had endoscopy/biopsy and it did not reveal any allergy/intolerance (eos cells). But still she has lots of mucous in her poops and general fussiness.
Has anyone else come across such situation? Her intestines have some inflammation though. The GI still feels I should continue her on Neocate.
Interestingly, I gave carrots and I saw more mucous. With rice cereal, she was contipated and she has more rashes when on Neocate than before. She turned 7 months today and I dont know what solids to give and what reactions I can expect since she has chronic mucous, rashes, spittings and frequent night waking too. GI doc wants me to continue on rice cereal and she has hard poops now!

I remember way back she didn’t want to nurse. Are you BF or Neocate- can’t remember what happened in the end. Also, was her inflammation in her esophagus, or intentines (just want to clarify).
I also wanted to add that biopsies can reveal allergies (EOS cells) but NOT intolerances, according to my understanding. Based on your reports, I would say that Anvita clearly has intolerances at the very least- rashes, mucous, and past bloody stools.
We also have terrible hard poops on rice and don’t give it to Hailey (not that it matters as she is a non-eater anyway). I hope that someone with allergy experience will post for you (there are so many experienced moms on this board who have been through that).
Good luck to you.

You are clearly seeing signs of intolerances so I think the doctor is wise to keep her on Neocate until she’s a little older. As far as rice, my daughter also seemed to have harder stools on rice (gee maybe I should give her some rice now that her stools are all loose), anyway we introduced prunes pretty early on and they really helped with that.
Ok, so I just re-read through your post – what foods was she on prior to the endoscopy? Just rice?
March 17, 2006 at 4:28 pm #4105AnonymousInactiveMy son has an intolerance to rice, and many other foods. You dont have to continue with rice if it is causing problems. Start with small amounts of new foods one at a time for 5-7 days and watch for reactions. You can start with apples, pears, potato, pumpkin, zucchini, and chicken.
Is the mucous still there when she is having Neocate only? With food trials you are looking for an increase in symptoms like, rash, irritability, nightwakings, mucousy bm’s etc. Also watch if the symptoms seem to stop when you stop the foods. It really is trial and error and dont be too dissapointed if she doesnt tolerate many foods. We have tried so many different foods, but Tyler can only tolerate 4 so far.
Good luck
March 17, 2006 at 8:15 pm #4114AnonymousInactiveat only 7 months old, i wouldn’t even give her any solids if she is having this much trouble. i’d go strictly neocate only.
March 21, 2006 at 6:18 pm #4384AnonymousInactiveThank you ladies and I’m very sorry for my late post. My dd has not been doing well these days and has become quite clingy.
Lori, The endoscopy and sigmoidoscopy went quite well. My dd cried a lot and has swollen face/eyes after that and cried whenever she saw anyone including my dh. I was heartbroken. The results relieved me, but they are not giving me any answers yet.
Anvita was sleep fed whole 3 months. I never tried to force her. But, I always offered her bottle when she was awake and she used to refuse. I used to rock her, feed her and never miss any schedule. Then slowly, she is now taking some feedings when awake. But, she has forgotton her hunger cues. I’m working on that now.
Stracey, yes, she was just on rice cereal once a day to control her diarrhea like symptoms. She pooped so much (loads of mucous) that she had sore bottom and we re-introduced rice cereal as it constipates her. I tried carrots out of desire and had to stop it too.
Amber, she has mucous on Neocate. Its now 4th week and I’m ready to quit!
Christine, I have stopped her solids since a week and yet I dont see any good change…I hope GI addresses these things in our next appt on March 31st.
March 22, 2006 at 10:51 am #4406AnonymousInactiveSangeetha, ready for some allergy testing?? Maybe its the corn in the neocate? My daughter has horrible ezcema on her eyes, most likely form a food allergy. I have had the same problem with the colitis of the intestines. Major mucous and gas. Maybe stopping the solids and just doing the neocate, thickened with simply thick would be wise for a while. The GI doc did say that it takes a couple weeks for the intestines to heal before you will see results, sounds like hers have been inflamed for a while. Call the GI Doc, dont wait until the 31st. Why would he want her on rice if it is causing a rash and loose stools? Doesn’t make sense.
May 9, 2006 at 10:17 am #7726AnonymousInactivehi Sangeetha,
We are also dealing with non igE allergies, or what some would call intolerances. But our allergist at Stanford calls thems allergies as they do still involve the immune system. This type of allergy is not caused by IgE antibodies so that is why on allergy testing they don’t show up. They are usually delayed reactions in nature.
DS is 12.5m and he was put on Neocate at 7weeks b/c of blood found in stool test. He did great. AT 6m we started rice and went 5-7days with every new food he did great. Then all of the sudden at 9m after a bad cold (no antibiotics or diarrhea just a cold) he started reacting to foods with a rash. We took all foods out and started food trails one at a time for 7 days. He ended up reacting to every food!!! on the 7th day of the challenge with rashes. We just took him off all solids and are keeping him just on neocate for the time per his allergists at Stanford.
In the meantime I am looking for an allergist who can help better explain these non igE allergies to me. What are they? Why do they not test for it even though the testing is not that accurate atleast it is something. And why did some of these not show up for 3m!!!
So basically Sangeetha, I understand your frustration. I agree with the pp who says call the GI doc now. And also with the other poster who said to take her off solids, she’s only 7m old, so she can still wait a bit and maybe that is what it will take for system to rest and regroup.
DS is 12.5m old and it so hard at this pt now b/c he is understanding more and wants to eat.
DS never wants to drink his bottle either and right now it is his only form of nutrition.
This is so tough.
Best,
Arati
May 18, 2006 at 3:07 pm #8278AnonymousInactiveArati, is it your ds having true intolerance now or is that he had some issues with immune system since his cold that he is not able to tolerate many solids? What does the allergist have to say about this now?
It is really strange that he was tolerating some thing earlier and now not able to tolerate them. Looks like the cold was some allergic triggered one which created some issues with his immune system. I hope he gets better soon.
Did you have any testing done so far?
