Infantreflux.org | ENT or pulmonologist??

My little man is 3 months and like most reflux babies is very congested. He sneezes a LOT and is very raspy. He sounds funny when he breathes out and chokes and gags ALL the time. I have been reading previous posts and have a question. Should he be seen by a ENT (ear, nose, and throat) or a pulmonologist? I know that I’m probably being paranoid, but it really bother me the way he breathes. It’s kinda hard for him to breathe when he eats and has to stop a lot to catch his breath. I suck him out with saline drops and a bulb syringe throughout the day, but I never seem to really get anything out. His ped and his ped GI say it’s not in his lungs, which is good news. My ds is on Prevacid and Elecare, and his reflux does not seem to bother him anymore. He spits up, but doesn’t cry or fuss like he used to. Since it’s not “in his lungs”, where should I go? I just want to make sure that I am doing everything I can to make him more comfortable and make sure he is receiving all of the treatments that are available. Any thoughts?

If the breathing is your concern, then I would say pulmonology for sure. Our ENT handled some of our breathing issues, but then we went to a pulm, and I kick myself for not getting there sooner….

so, can a pulmonologist handle breathing questions that don’t have to do with the lungs? This is where I’m stuck.

I would rule out the lungs first and then move onto an ENT if the pulm thinks that is more appropriate. Our Pulmonologist looked in Carter’s nose, ears, and did the bronchoscopy to look down the throat, so basically she covered all of the ENT portions of Carter’s body. We have an ENT who did remove the tonsils/adenoids and put in ear tubes, but I think that the pulmonologist would be where I would start…….

I should add that Carter’s breathing problems are not in his lungs either, they are his airway and the lungs have never been a problem for him, but the pulmonologist was the only one who diagnosed the non growing airway for him even though his lungs were always determined fine by our pedi….
