InactiveI think I remember that Alimentum may still have traces of milk protein?? I know Neocate has helped alot who have had the same problem. The mucos makes me think there is still a problem with the formula.

InactiveAlana,
I TOTALLY AGREE!! Naps really are overrated aren’t they???
I’ll tell Cooper you said so!Yes he is on a very high dose, so I am almost positive that can’t be it.
Yeah the mucous thing is bothering me, but I am trying to give it time. He actually had a fairly normal poo last night and I thought, yeah! But I had to give him a suppository in order to get a stool sample ( they want to check for parasites- eeew! ) and it was nothing but mucous. Ugg!
My older son had the same issues, but not nearly as much mucous and the nutramigan cleared things right up.
It’s hard to remember that they aren’t the same little bodies…
Jenny, the isomil is soy right? Is she lactose-intolerant? Is that more rare than the MSPI? My dr says that almost never happens, but yet I see lots of posts on babies who can’t have the prevacid solutabs because of the lactose…

InactiveOk, Im new here but I wish I had found this forum a long time ago!
Im going through all these post and thinking to myself with almost every one of them “OMG, this is me!”
Im actually suffering with some depression worse than my post partum right now do to this very same thing going on with my daughter right now and no one ever seems to have answers.
Brielle was diagnosed with Reflux when she was two weeks old due to my insisting something was wrong. Finally they tested her and sure enough, a very severe case of it. She had been throwing up since I had her, even in the hospital and yet they couldnt see something wasnt right.
None of the medications worked and currently she is on 1ml of Axid 2x per day and he wants to add 15 ml of prilosec a day to see if it helps at all.
But about month 3, she quit sleeping and its steadily gotten worse to the point I am so close to loosing it. I cant function of even take care of myself Im so tired.
I dont understand. She was getting better and sleeping more and more. She had gotten to where she would sleep 6 hours in one stretch at nigt and then all of a sudden, in one night about two months ago, she went down to two hour stretches. Now its even worse. She wakes every 5-30 minutes all night and during naps. And she does it with the same whimpering and crying out in her sleep but you can tell she is so tired (like I am) but seems to be in pain or discomfort.
Now to top it off she is rolling around so I cant keep her on an incline either.
Sorry to intrude on your post but Im right here with you!

InactiveHello and welcome (lifeuntome),
I’ve had two reflux babies so I sure know what you are going through. My daughter did exactly what your’s is doing. She was sleeping through the night at a very young age, but something happened at 10 weeks or so. She started waking every 20 – 45 minutes (on average, sometimes she’d sleep a whole hour!). All night long this went on and like you said, I could tell she was very tired and desperately wanted to sleep but something was bothering her. I explained this to her doctor and she immediately suspected reflux but unfortunately she prescribed Zantac which did little to help my daughter.
Most of us here have found that H2 Blockers like Zantac and Axid to be very ineffective. Sometimes babies will get some initial relief but it doesn’t last for most babies.
Most babies seem to do better on PPI meds. Prilosec is a PPI but unfortunately it has it’s problems. It’s compound and sadly many pharmacists do not compound it properly and that causes it to lose it’s effectiveness right there in the bottle so you are giving your baby a degraded medication that will do nothing.
So, I’d either ask for another PPI medication like Prevacid or Zegerid (you can read about these at http://www.marci-kids.com) or I’d check to make sure her Prilosec is being prepared properly. Also, I’d check her dose since most doctors under dose our infants since they are not aware of the research at marci-kids that shows babies metablolize and eliminate these 3-4 times faster than adults.
Here’s a link which explains compounding of PPI meds. https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7855&a mp;KW=prilosec Scroll down to s&h’s mum’s post. She explains it well.
What formula is she on? Some reflux babies are also MSPI (milk / soy protein intolerant, so that’s something to consider as well. You can read more about that in Laura’s intro which also contains lots of other valuable information. It’s stickied in the Introduce Yourself Forum. We also have an MSPI forum which you can take a look at.
Well I’m glad you found us and I hope we can help. It might be a good idea for you to talk to a counselor or Pastor or your doctor about your depression. It’s certainly normal in the post partum period and can be worse due to the stress of taking care of a reflux baby. The sleep deprivation doesn’t help either. Maybe talking to someone who would really listen would help. I spoke to my pastor when I was going through it the second time and it really helped me.
Hang in there.

InactiveBrielle is a 6 month breast fed baby. I tried the elimination diet and it did nothing to change what was going on in the beginning. I take her for her 6 month follow up on the 2nd and will take all the info you have given to me and see what her pediatrician says.
He just gave me a prescription for prevacid solutab which I will be picking up tomorrow. He wants to do that with the Axid. She was on Reglan but had an allergic reaction to it. I cant take it either.
Im sure now that I have found you, you will hear alot from me from now on
A sincere thanks!

InactiveLifeuntome,
We all soooooo know your pain!! This web site is a lifesaver for mommy’s sanity and baby’s relief.
Christine got you all the good links- read read read!
I hope your Dr isn’t a caveman and gives you a good dose of prevacid- be patient, it’s hard but you soon will see a happier baby! And like Christine said, if after a few weeks, baby still seems unhappy, consider your diet if you are BF’ing and the formula if not. That is where I am with Cooper right now, things are FINALLY normal after dx a MSPI. Alimentum RTF was ( knock on wood ) the icing on the cake!
Reflux is often detective work, and most moms on here will concur- YOU have to do the work- the Dr kinda is just your prescription writer…
Hang in there!

InactiveTo those wondering about lactose intolerance and MSPI: What I have read and heard from the ped, ped gi nad children’s allergist and lactation consultants is that lactose intolerance proper in babies is pretty rare. MSPI is a more likely culprit if they cannot tolerate dairy foods in bmilk or in their own diets. They may have similar reactions, but the reason for those reactions is actually different. Not being able to tolerate dairy as a newborn is not that rare, it’s just that our society at large in the US has a very dairy-based diet– and we are taught (for right or wrong) that dairy foods are VERY GOOD for everyone. although many babies CAN tolerate dairy proteins just fine, many cannot. I think it’s the first thing most folks “in the know” suggest to remove from the bfeeding mother’s diet– because it’s such a common culprit with newborn fussiness, etc. In many countries around the world (many parts of Asia and Africa) adults (and adult bfeeding women) rarely consume dairy products, so they do not see these issues in the same ways as we do.
