Experiences with endoscopies??

Can any of you tell me what your experiences were with endoscopies? My 3 1/2 month old DD is scheduled for one on thursday and i’m just terrified because she has to receive general anesthesia.

Did your child experience any pain after the procedure? Sore throat, etc?

Any side effects/problems with anesthesia?

What was your child like as he/she came out from under the anesthesia?

Any other advice, questions i should ask before she goes in???

Noah had an edoscope when he was 8 months old. The procedure took about 15 minutes once he was asleep. When he came out of it, he was very groggy and listless. He sounded hoarse and he had the most horrible smelling breath due to the anesthesia. The only problem that we ran into was wheezing. About 30 minutes after the procedure, he started wheezing and he ended up having a breathing treatment to correct it. The anesthesiologist told us before hand that it was somewhat common to have this happen, due to the anesthesia. Once his breathing was normal again, he had to take a bottle before they allowed us to leave. We were told that he probably would have a sore throat and may not eat normally for a day or two.

The one thing I would ask before the procedure is if he will be given sedation through an I.V, rectally or with gas. My ds was put under with an I.V. I wish I would have known before hand that they werent going to relax him first or sedate him with gas and THEN run the I.V. I just hated the thought of him being stuck with the needle while he was still awake.

Lisa- he had to take a bottle before they’d let you leave?! That’ll be fun. I hate it when these people don’t understand the term feeding aversion!

Lori – Yep, we had to give him a bottle before we left. Luckily for us, he was still groggy and we were able to sleep feed 3 oz before he woke up and started refusing to eat.

I believe for ours, my DD will be given a little gas to calm her before the IV…I HOPE that’s the case because I’m with you…i can’t stand to think of them putting an IV in her while she’s awake…horrible.

ds had one at 10 months and then another one recently at 2 yrs.

having him come out of the anesthesia sucks. be prepared for the possibility of lots of crying because the babe is groggy and disoriented for a while and that freaks them out.

thankfully the anesthesia messes with memory so the babe should not retain these memories and will probably just feel a little out of sorts for the rest of the day and then most likely get back to business as usual by the next day.

the whole fasting requirement really would throw the schedule off the rest of the day, once we were done with the endoscopy

the hospital we go to sedates the babe prior to IV insertion so they don’t know it is going in but when ds came out of the anesthesia he was mighty upset to have the thing strapped to his hand.

it will go by quickly. the way our hospital did it is that the 2 nurses would identify themselves, double check the identity of the patient and we would walk down the hall together. before getting closer to the procedure room the nurse takes the baby and the parent has to go the opposite direction to the day surgery waiting area(not the reception)

once the babe is done and they have been monitored for a bit and encouraged to come out of the anesthesia they took me back to ds in the recovery area. they do encourage baby to drink up after so that they can monitor their vitals and allow the baby to completely come out of it.

not much else to it except the worry the parent goes through and the exhaustion that sinks in on the ride home. so i would say don’t plan on doing anything else the rest of the day. veg out if you can.

i also hope that you get some clarification on what is going on with your baby.

We never had to have an IV for any of Samantha’s endoscopies. (she has had 3) We just went into the room that they would do the procedure and the gave her the gas while I was still there. We waited less than 8 feet away and it took about 10 minutes. The first two times, she had a Ph probe in place. She was a little fussy coming out of anesthesia each time, but she is after any anesthesia. They let us go home (well to the hotel right by the hospital) without her drinking anything. They told me that after I had her calmed down, try and feed her some juice and if she would not or could not, come back to the hospital. As soon as we were away from there she took 2 oz.
