InactiveIts kind of the million dollar question
. The only way I worked it out with Alana was giving it a whirl to be honest. Thats pretty much what I have done all along- tried something and seen if it worked- in the early stages I thought Alana was my high school science experiement
. But, like you, I did it because I wanted to help Alana. Whatever you do I know that it is to help Trace- even if the first strategy isn’t successfull and you work out it is really pain, then you have more info. And we will support you, we know that you need to do something, it is so hard for you, and no matter what you do you will find out something that will help you do the next thing and the next thing.February 4, 2007 at 7:58 am #24051Anonymous
InactiveIt is nearly impossible to always know what’s wrong with our little ones. It’s soooooooooooooo frustrating too because it’s ALWAYS something! My best advice…
1) Either wait another few days/week until Trace seems himself before trying any sleep training, or give it a whirl now and see how it goes.
2) Make sure you are consistent when you try. It will serve no purpose if you go in and rescue or resort back to old methods.
3) Don’t listen to other people harsh critisisms of whatever you decide to do. I have an aunt who was beside herself that I let Sarah cry it out. She said she never let her kids do that and would hug and rock and love until they went to bed. That’s very nice and sweet but she STILL has a 5 year old who won’t sleep without her. ??? Soooo, remember that we are here to cheer you on through whatever decision you make.
In the meantime while you are trying to figure out what is wrong with Trace, don’t beat yourself up about the feeling asleep habits he has now. There will be time to work on that when he’s feeling his best.

InactiveYou know I hated to hear Brianna cry too. That is why I settled on what I did. She had to cry, but only for a certain period of time. If she still needed me I was there. I think you will come to learn what is crying in pain, and what is just being a baby cry. It might take a few days. The first few days I did my sleep training i guess is what they call it, with Brianna, I assumed because she cried for 20 min, something must be wrong, but after a day or two, when she realized that I would come back up, but I wouldn’t stay forever, well that got old to her. Now, like I said she hardly cries at all, and I KNOW if she has cried for over a certain period of time, then something is wrong.
That being said…you are Trace’s mommy and you know him better than anyone! You have to do what you think is right. I don’t think CIO is right for every baby. It will be a lot of trial and error to see what works for Trace, but you will figure it out!
We are cheering for you both!!!

InactiveSleep training is annoying, yet I think necessary on some level…my first son (no reflux) was sorta like Trace….he had to be swaddled though and rocked until asleep, and if you set him down too soon, oh boy were you in trouble…For naps he would only sleep swaddled in his swing or bouncy seat, and often times with a baby einstein dvd…but at bedtime he had to be in a dark room rocked and swaddled tight….for hours….at nine months (well a week short of 9 months) I was getting tired of it, and my husband had long been sick of it so I did CIO..a modified version…we agreed to let him cry 20 minutes and if he cried longer than to go back and start his routine over (book, rock a few minutes then in the crib) well the first night he cried exactly 20 minutes, then next night 10, then like 3 then nothing (I did the same thing for naps also and it worked)…..and since then hes been a great going to bed and sleeping through kid (he’s 2.5 now, he talks himself to sleep now, but still after we read and tuck him into bed he stays there and sleeps.
Now Audrey we didnt want to get to that point (9 months of pulling our hair out) but she is the reflux kid..so we did like all of you, when she was in pain I would hold her, she often slept on me or next to me, her crib was up against our bed with the side off…We would rock, jiggle, whatever to get her to sleep, but once her meds were working…we started the lay her in her crib while sleepy, with her blanky and her mobile on (we have the mobile by tiny love that plays music and has cool patterns/animals) she falls asleep to that…and will even fall asleep at other peoples houses now (relatives) without it….of course we have our days…like today, but overalll she is a good fall asleeper….getting her to sleep through…thats another story..she still gets up many times…but if she can put herself back to sleep we are happy.
Sorry for the ramble…gotta run
and good luck with whatever you choose
