InactiveYes and Yes!!!! I would leave them there for a little while and
then move on to stuff he liked. I didn’t want him to be totally
discouraged so I would always end with something he enjoyed. As for the olive oil, I would just boil up the pasta and when I drained
the water, then I would add just enough olive oil to coat it so it
wouldn’t stick together. I would usually cut one piece of
macaroni into about 3 little pieces for him. We have slowly
progressed to larger sizes but that’s what I started with.Don’t worry about the questions – hopefully this will help you and Marisa!

InactiveThanks again – will keep trying and let you know how it’s going!

InactiveThe boiled carrots are still a no-go. She couldn’t pick them up at
first and let me feed her a piece and then spit it out and made a face
(texture) and wouldn’t touch it again or let me give it to her. Guess
will try the green beans tonightJune 16, 2006 at 2:24 pm #9911Anonymous
InactiveSorry about chiming in so late, but Claire also had a rough time with “slimy finger foods” at first. Here is what worked for her: I spread fruit and veggie purees on rice toast or oat crackers so she could feed herself. She didn’t want me to feed her with a spoon, but she wouldn’t pick up/eat cubed fruit/veggies. This was a good solution. I added a very thin, sparse layer of spreads at first and then gradually used more. It was pretty messy, but it worked. For Claire, half the battle was her having a hard time with the feeling of slimy food on her hands (vs. in her mouth). Hummus works well too.
We had these tiny dehydrated apple pieces from Gerber. They’re crunchy and Claire liked them. I inconspiciously added some equally tiny cooked fruit cubes on her tray among the crunchy ones. She would “accidentally” eat one now and then and gradually she figured out it wasn’t so bad.
Finally, try lentil pasta! We get penne (Padadini) and it stays fairly “al dente” in texture and holds its shape, even when well-cooked. As pasta goes, its pretty unslimy. It also packs a nutritional whallop (13g protein per 2 oz serving).
Finally, finally (
i just thought of this one), maybe just give her a toddler spoon and a bowl with the slimy foods and let her experiment. Claire was so tickled when she actually managed to get the spoon to her mouth with a morsal of food still on it, she didn’t seem to mind that it was something slimy.June 16, 2006 at 3:04 pm #9915Anonymous
InactiveThanks Karen – always great to hear from you. I have tried that with
putting the purees on crackers but even those feel too slimy to her –
when she picks up the cracker she feels the puree and pushes it aside.
Luckily for now she lets me spoon feed her puree – but I don’t know for
how much longer. With her I think it’s just as much feeling slimy in
mouth as in hand – but hard to say.I keep meaning to pick up those apple pieces and will do so today –
quite sneaky with you adding in the cooked ones too – will have to try
that.Lentil pasta – interesting! I’ve never seen that – where do you buy it?
I haven’t tried lentils yet but maybe that’s how we’ll try them out.I did try that as well with the spoon and bowl but she just chews the
spoon and throws the bowl and food on the floor. But again, will just
keep trying!June 16, 2006 at 3:49 pm #9927Anonymous
InactiveHi Karen! How is Claire doing these days?
We also put down a bowl and spoon and Hailey just throws it down or makes the hugest mess with it!!! It’s so hard for me to get past the mess! My poor kitchen.

InactiveWell the pasta was again a no-go tonight – finger size pieces with
olive oil. But I did buy the Gerber apple bites – the freeze dried
apple pieces and she fed herself almost 1/4 of the bag and loved them –
so at least that’s a fruit she can self feed! It’s just too bad that
the only other flavors they make are corn and banana/strawberry – our
Ped said no corn or strawberry/raspberry until one year.June 16, 2006 at 9:54 pm #9948Anonymous
InactiveThat’s great that she liked those freeze dried pieces. Hailey HATES them. We’ve tried all flavours.

InactiveKaren- Wheat is a “no go” for Claire so we have experimented with lots of alternative grain pastas. Lentil seems to be the best. We get it at our local health food grocery store. Glad Marisa enjoyed the freeze dried apples. This may be a pretty extreme idea, but you could buy a small freeze dryer and make crunchy pieces out of all sorts of fruits and veggies!
Lori- Thanks for asking about Claire. As not to hijack this thread, I’ll post an update.

InactiveLOL thanks Karen – but no room in my apartment for a freeze dryer!
We’re not too far off from one year so we can try the corn and
banana/strawberry flavors then. I’ll go look for your update on Claire!June 17, 2006 at 11:33 am #9971Anonymous
InactiveKaren- Just curious why is your doctor against corn until one year? Our allergist told us to start introducing it for Ian at 10months. She’s very pro corn saying it’s great for many varietys – pasta, chips, etc.

InactiveActually, I had it wrong – corn is OK now – DH read something wrong – we’ll try it very soon then!

InactiveGreat. We can’t wait to try it too. She gave us a sheet on all kinds of corn tips in exchange for wheat etc (cant try until 1 year). I’ll pull the sheet out and try to email some of it to you if helpful.
Funny, I know Dr. Sears said corn is highly allergic but she said it’s one of the least.

InactiveYea, we’re trying cheese tomorrow (!) but will likely try the corn next.

InactiveHi Karen – great news on the fruit pieces. Something else Zach
loved was small pieces of pancakes. As they were not slimy, he
would eat those himself. I would make up a bunch and keep in the
freezer for a quick breakfast or any meal. Let us know how the
cheese goes. -
