InactiveI am thrilled with where I take Sarah to daycare. I could not imagine taking her anywhere else. She’s loved, she learns and it’s such a great environment…that being said…
The sitter has given Sarah some foods that I would not have given her at this point. She had a small corner of the crust of a pop-tart last week and cinammon applesauce today (regular, not baby applesauce). It’s NOT like she’s giving her soda, chocolate or anything insanely crazy for a baby to have but I’m just so paranoid about Sarah tolerating “non traditional” baby food items. Am I being weird about this?
I don’t know if Sarah’s fussiness her first 4 months was due entirely
to reflux or if she has a little bit of MSPI. I switched to Alimentum
around the same time the Zegerid started working and I’ve been afraid
to try any other formula because she is doing SO great. I’m hesitant about trialing new foods
because I don’t know if she has any sensitivities?? She’s never had any reactions to any purees or other baby foods, but I’m “overly”
paranoid when it comes to food and the eventual introduction of dairy,
milk etc…I’m not sure if this is just a first time mom thing and I’m
over reacting…??? I about had a heart attack at Thanksgiving when my dad slipped Sarah a small bite of pumpkin pie. She survived, so maybe I need to lighten up.As I’m typing this I’m realizing that I probably am over reacting. Maybe part of the issue is knowing that I am not the one with her all day to try these things…ugh…I don’t know. What do you ladies think? I don’t know if I have the heart to say anything to the sitter. I know she’s not doing anything to harm Sarah intentionally and I don’t want to sound like the kooky over protective mom!!
Sorry for rambling!

InactiveHi Amy,
Gee this is a tough one. I kind of know how you feel this week, with Alana starting day care.
You and Sarah have been through so much; it is so understandable that you don’t want to “upset the applecart (or is that sauce
)” and go back to step 1. So I certainly don’t think you are over reacting or weird about it. You are understandably worried that Sarah might have problems with new foods. If it were me and my daycare I suppose if Alana was just trying new foods that were a low irritant risk I probably wouldn’t say to much- but I would be concerned if it were something that is more likely to cause a reaction (ie pop tart) and the potential for it to extend beyond this (pop tart one day, lick of icecream the next). If it were the later I would probably be open and honest and explain my fear (ie exactly as you did above- I thought it was very balanced and you did not come across as a kooky mum at all (I believe it is our job to be overprotective
). I am sure you sitter would be fine about it. She sounds like a great sitter and just might need a gentle reminder that Sarah just needs things a little different to non-reflux babies (I guess it is easy for people to forget).Hope it works out whatever you decide.

Inactivei think u posted one time about thinking about trying yogurt. i think maybe you should try it with her and see what happens.. than you should know how she handles milk??? that is what we did with shane last week. we gave him half a yogurt, and his poop right afterwards had mucous in it…
i wish i had tried that first before switching the formula to a milk based. anyhow, maybe if you try something like that it would be easier than switching the formula to see if she can tolerate any dairy. that way you will know and let the daycare workers know. well, just an idea

InactiveI would hate to say something to the babysitter but at the same time you don’t want her to be fed some of that stuff. I would just print out the MSPI safe list for her and say these are the things that she can have and just explain what could happen when she does have some milk and soy foods…….I think that your babysitter won’t feel hurt by that or anything just informed

InactiveI think I’d probably do some kind of dairy trial, too. This way you can ease your mind and since you’re going to have to do it sometime, why not now? I started Myles’ dairy trial at 9 months. 2 ounces of Good Start a day for two weeks. Once he was fine with that I upped it to 4 ounces a day for about a week, and kept increasing it until he was on Good start exclusively. Then I trialed whole milk. Since she’s too young to go off of formula I’d try yogurt after the Good Start trial, or before, just not both at the same time.
Your post reminds me of how I was with Liza. I don’t think she had her first cookie until she was close to 2 yrs old.
You are more cautious with your first, even without reflux/allergies/intolerances. Myles had his first cookie at 15 months so I guess I’ve relaxed a little bit between my first and third.
If your’re worried you can tell the sitter that you’d like to be the first to trial foods with Sarah and that you’ll let her know what foods she can have. I’m sure she’ll understand. She seems like a great sitter.

InactiveThank you so much for the suggestions. I think I will talk to the sitter and explain that I’m feeling overly cautious because I DON’T know if she’ll have a reaction. I felt partially guilty about the cinammon applesauce b/c the sitter didn’t tell me that I needed to bring more baby food. I didn’t know she was out, but I felt like if I would have kept her stocked up then she wouldn’t have had to give it to her?!?! Ugh…I need to stop making excuses. I don’t want to be the mom that makes Sarah live in a “plastic bubble”…but I don’t want her to have a bad reaction to any foods either.
I agree with what Lauren said though…if she doesn’t trial these foods then I WON’T ever really know. I have to bring more food tomorrow so maybe I’ll just buy some “mommy approved” foods and let her know those are the only foods I want her to have (cheerios, rice cakes, fruits, veggies, maybe even yogurt too! etc…)
Thanks again. It made me feel better just talking about it.

InactiveChristine – We must have posted at the same time.
OK, I think I’m going to do a yogurt trial first…then if there doesn’t seem to be any adverse reaction to that I’ll slowly start the switch to Good Start (which I wanted to do eventually anyway). I’d love to not have to pay for Alimentum anymore! How much yogurt and how often/how many days do I give it to her before I decide it’s OK? Also, I remember Laura saying something about yo-baby not being all that great…any other suggestions?January 17, 2007 at 11:05 am #22524Anonymous
InactiveYeah Isaac didn’t do so well with yo-baby but we like Yoplait for kids:
http://www.yoplait.com/kids_nu.aspx I don’t get the plain yogurt b/c he hates it! Good luck!

Inactiveoh yeah we did yo baby .. no wonder the horrible outcome! haha.. but i have a feeling he would have done that on any of them.. i am going to try again when he is more like 9 or 10 mos. .
well goodluck!! i think u might know after one or two feedings of it.. and i wouldnt give the whole yogurt in one sitting…
let us know how it goes!! hope it goes well!!!!

InactiveAmy,
I think the yo-baby has lots of added sugar. The dietitian I spoke to highly recommends Dannon Fruit on the bottom. It’s the brand with the least added sugar, and definitely be sure not to buy any lite brands as they contain artificial sweetners. I buy an organic brand that’s very similar to Dannon Fruit on the Bottom. It’s called Stonyfield Farms, but if they are out I buy the Dannon. Both brands actually have berries (strawberry or blueberry). I started with blueberries because Myles had already had pears with blueberries in pureed form and did fine with it. Have you tried any berries yet? If not you might want to try berries first, or start with plain yogurt….although plain yogurt is kind of yucky…she may not eat it, but you won’t know unless you try. Myles will eat plain yogurt, but my girls never would.
If you try the berry kind you’ll want to stir it very lightly so the bigger berry chunks stay on the bottom (if she’s not used to textures yet).
As for how much to start with….I started with a few tablespoons for a few days and then gradually increased it to 1/2 a container which is what Myles usually eats now.
I like your list of approved foods for the sitter. When I was a nanny I always asked for a list and didn’t give the baby anything that wasn’t on the list without asking the mom first.

Inactivewe did yo-baby after a year (hannah was on alimentum and was definitely mspi). we went super slow, 1 oz a day for a week then adding an oz each week x4 wks and monitored all reactions closely. other than a little extra gas (which i presume is from the additional probiotics which i already gave her in her bottles). but before we went to yogurt, we trialed “hidden dairy” in cheddar goldfish or annie’s cheddar bunnies for a week first…

InactiveJust wanted to update…We are on day 2 of our yogurt trial and so far everything seems good…I hate to even post this since all he## could break loose tomorrow.
I started giving her Benefiber in her morning bottle 4 days ago to help with constipation so her stools have been softer than the rocks she had previously BUT there are no signs of mucous or anything since the yogurt (4 poopie diapers since the yogurt started)…and no rashes…so I’m hopeful!
How long would you suggest I give her yogurt before I make a formula switch? She has had a half of a container each day for two days now. I’m thinking maybe two full weeks of yogurt and then a gradual switch to Good Start? Or is two weeks too long and not necessary?
Thanks so much ladies!

InactiveGood news! I’m glad the benefiber is helping. I’m not sure about how long to trial yogurt, but I’m glad to hear she’s tolerating it so far.

InactiveI remember asking how long Brianna would need to be on yogurt before we could say that it was a success…someone here (I can’t remember who) said two weeks…I know we didn’t wait that long
but we did wait for over a month after having her on yogurt and cheese before we tried whole milk. I doubt you would need to wait that long with formula, but I would say to wait the two weeks. Good luck!b’s mom2007-1-24 14:2:17

InactiveAmy:
Granted Abby is a little older than Sarah, we started her on 1/2 Alimentum and 1/2 Good Start and did that for 3 days then went totally on Good Start. It has been 3 weeks already and things are good. We figured it would work OK because she had been eating cheese (the little mouse) and not having any problems. Per advice on this board, we went to the Good Start that didn’t have the AHA/DHA (I think that is the initials) and it has been awesome (and the financial savings are great too!!). A friend of mine who just had a baby has a ton of Good Start coupons she was going to give me but since Abby turns 1 next week, I assume we will be transistioning to whole milk soon so perhaps I could mail the coupons to you (I think I still have your address) I will check with her to see if she still has them.
Good luck and keep us posted on how she does!!
