Inactivei didnt realize prilosec was so expensive, i just called walmart about the 20 mg capsules to mix with caracream and they said its $140! thats about the same as we are paying for zegerid.
anyway, they said generic costs around $85, just wondering if anyone used generic meds? i havent heard anything about them.November 21, 2006 at 4:52 pm #18676Anonymous
Inactivehmmm I use generic medication myself, but don’t think there is a generic prevacid, if there was I’d probably try it. I know from expierence with my medication that usually generics are just as good as brand name, and if the generic is made by the same company that makes the brand name it’s a pretty good bet that it’s the EXACT same med. It’s harder to say that about the meds that have had generics out so long that multiple companies are making them. (But I’d say that 95% of the time they work just as well)-but I’m not talking from expiernce with generic ppi’s just generic meds in general!
If I were you I’d fill the rx with the generic and try it. If you see a change for the worse for some reason, you can always refill it with the brand name?

Inactiveaww this is so annoying!
medicaid refused to pay for zegerid so we have been paying for it, they said its too $$
funny thing is they paid for the prevacid 30 mg caps when he was on them for a short time, and i just called the pharmacy and they are the same price!! there is like a $5 difference?! wtf??!!!!
i dont get this. i am going to talk to our doctor and have her call them.
what a joke!November 21, 2006 at 5:05 pm #18681Anonymous
InactiveMy understanding is generic meds are equivelent in their actions to the brand name. The active ingredient in the generic is chemically identical to the active ingredient in the brand name. The following website has a very easy explanation- I’m into easy!
http://counsellingresource.com/medications/discount-drugs/ge nerics.html
When a drug first comes out it has like the equivelent of a patent or copyright- that is no one else can make it for a certain period of time. Then once that time is up other companies can make it- if they want to. Thats how it works over here anyway. So they are supposed to be equivelent in action.
At the end of the day I would probably check with Doc!

Inactivemedicaid ROCKS!!!!!! LOL you’re running into my little issue, trace was on the caps? they’ll pay for those and the pacKets but not the solutabs(well ok they did last time, no idea why). When I called about that the issue wasn’t money, it was put to me this way, they’ll pay for the medication that is the “standard” for things, you have to get a prior auth. for anything else, and if it’s a new med (like Zegred) there’s pretty much a snowball’s chance in hell medicaid is going to approve the auth. You can have your ped try to fight them on it (I forget what it’s called but when I called medicaid they told me what the process is on peds. apealing a denyed prior auth.) But a lot of peds just don’t want to deal with that aparently it’s a pain in the butt. Isn’t it nice that you can get assistance..with everything except the med you really NEED!!!!! Good luck!!!

InactiveI believe Joel once posted about a generic omeprazole. Not sure if this one was OTC though. It’s a tablet that you can crush and put into the CaraCream. Don’t know much else about it.

Inactivethanks…just talked to the ped, she said more than likely medicaid has a contract with prevacid, thats why they dont have a problem covering it.
too bad Trace cant tolerate prevacid
we may try out the generic prilosec…with caracream…

InactiveHi, we are currently using the generic prilosec (Losec here in Canada). I first tried opening the capsules and sprinkling the granules into baby pears (which is what I’ve been doing for the past 3 years with her with Prevacid), but she HATED it and would gag terribly. Apparently it’s known for its bad taste. I then tried mixing it with Caracream – according to her still tastes horrible. Now I have to add a little chocolate syrup to each dose right before I give it to her, then she’ll take it. Only problem is it makes for a larger dose, more for her to have to swallow each time.
We switched from Prevacid to Losec b/c the Prevacid was no longer working for her. So far the Losec has been great.
Good luck.

Inactiveyeah i am not looking forward to him fighting me about the taste !!
🙁anyway did you try increasing her prevacid dose before you switched to losec? usually its the other way around as prevacid is a stronger drug than losec.

InactiveYes, actually, I did, but on a dose higher than 15mg she couldn’t sleep! An unfortunate side-effect for some. 20mg of Losec seems to be ok, I think it puts her on the verge of insomnia but nothing like the higher dose of Prevacid.

InactiveNot sure if your state has this or not? It is called Children’s Special Health Care Services (CSHCS). It is a program run by the state for children with health problems. It does not matter how much your income is upper, middle or lower class. It goes on your previous years income and then you are required to make monthly payments for 1 year based on the range you fall in. It requires you to see a subspecialist (ped GI) not a ped. It covers Neocate, copays for your prescriptions, copays for the office but nothing to do with well visits, etc. Everything must go through your insurance and get declined then it can get submitted there CSHCS.
