I know that rice is the most easily digested for ‘regular’ babies, but I thought I remember seeing that oatmeal was moms cereal of choice for their MSPI LO’s. I’m stocking up for after our fruit/veggie trial. FYI-Evie is pretty severe with the MSPI business. Any thoughts???
OH MY GOSH I love her picture! That is adorable!!! Yes, I think oatmeal is preferred over rice (for constipation issues as well). I do recall that there is a certain brand of oatmeal preferred because it doesn’t have something in it…soy maybe? Hopefully someone else will chime in!
Many of us have found oatmeal to be less binding, whereas rice can be cause gas and constipation, not just for MSPI babies but for all babies. Some babies do fine on rice though.
Some Gerber cereals contain soy which you’d want to avoid if she’s MSPI. Beechnut does not contain soy. I’m not sure but I think the Earth’s Best Organic cereals are soy free too. You can buy them online or in some health food stores.
Bryce did best on oatmeal too. Actually we just alternated rice and oatmeal and he did fine that way. I think I’ve heard barley cereal is pretty gentle as well.
Just a word of caution from a dietitician point of view, if at all possible hold off on oatmeal/barley cereal until she is 6months old. These contain gluten which rice cereal does not and introducing these before 6months old can increase her risk for celiac dz in the future. We have just started veggies so I know how hard it is to just be giving veggies/fruits but if it prevents celiac dz which isn’t easy to manage (many foods have gluten in them), then we are waiting until 6months possibly 7 to introduce any cereal.
