After a goon night’s sleep, I think that I have come up with a plan. I am going to continue Jackson’s reduced casein, gluten diet. He is almost casein free, with the possibility of some contamination in his whey formula. He gets tubes in just a few days and I feel like I need to see the difference that the tubes make on language. After I see what the tubes do, I am going to go completely dairy free and see what that does- probably in about a month. We had such a wonderful day yesterday! He gave me 3 kisses when I said “give Momma a kiss.” I cried! Also, when I said “could you bring Momma a book that you want to read,” he got a book and started to bring it to me! Then I said “sit on my lap”and he did! Sure, he chooses to ignore my requests a lot of the time, but I am starting to see a lot more understanding and receptive language. I am going to get the tubes for him, wait a couple of weeks so that I know what the tubes are doing and then go all the way on the diet. He has just changed too much for it all to be coincidence. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR ADVICE AND SUPPORT!

I know what hard work it is to implement the diet, and some people will think you’re crazy for it, but like you, we just couldn’t deny the amazing results. It’s funny, because in this region of the world we are raised believing that wheat and milk are essential and healthy. But they make so many kids very sick. What do other people think of the changes in him? I know our neighbors, out of town relatives, even our family doctor, were all amazed!
You are truely doing something wonderful for your little boy, and I give you a HUGE congratulations!! It will be so exciting for you to watch him blossom before your eyes.January 13, 2009 at 3:18 pm #60288AnonymousInactiveI haven’t been on much, very busy with Taylor. Anyways, when we put Taylor on the GFCF diet within 3 days we noticed a difference. She was much happier, and made much better eye contact! She also started to make noises which she never did before and much less tanturming. I definitely believe in the GFCF diet and like Sheri said it doesn’t work for everyone but when it does, it is such a great thing.

i’ve thought that maybe i should go totally gluten free with my kids to see if it helps my fibro after you had told me that you felt better when you went gluten free. i know i haven’t developed celiac, because i just had a blood test done again.also, if a child has celiac disease, sometimes the problems with milk will go away once the intestines have healed from the damage the gluten has caused.March 14, 2009 at 10:38 pm #61628AnonymousInactiveI read Dr. Bocks “Healing the Childhood Epidemics” and really think I need to do this (again). When DS was an infant, he had reflux and allergic colitis…I did elimination and found that elimination of dairy and wheat produced results, but no one believed me,and eventually I fell off the wagon with no support…
so now he’s 18 months, has had multiple ear infections, gets a red pin prick rash on his cheeks, and has started with probable asthma. He is slightly delayed on some things, but not on the autism spectrum. My question is….does anyone test for these things so that my family will believe me?!

I doubt that the testing is definitive, but it can give you some idea of whether the dietary changes would be beneficial. Jackson is no longer delayed and appears to be typical. We did not continue with the diet because once we got tubes, it was a matter of days before he started showing changes. He is now 18 mos has about 40 words, 20 signs and uses lots of gestures to communicate. He is not putting 2 words together except for “all done” but I am not really worried about development anymore. His physical development has never been a concern since he walked at 9 mos! His intensity and hyperactivity has also really slowed down. In retrospect, I think that a lot of his behavior and issues all went back to GERD. He did not feel well, he barely heard anything due to ear infections, etc. He was intense, in pain, and it kept him from learning. Have you thought about tubes, Valery? I am telling you, it changed my child dramatically. The docs kept telling me that there was minimal fluid in his ears. Bull! When they performed the surgery, I was told that he actually had glue ear and probably heard very little. They also removed his adenoids. Since then, we have seen a lot of changes and he has been kicked out of early intervention! We used the Teach Me to Talk video that you can order online, along with play therapy to catch him up. Worked wonders. Jackson does show signs of allergies though. He still gets ear infections (not as many) despite the tubes and he has mild eczema. We go to a developmental pediatrician and she said that she wants to take his blood to test for something to see if we need to cut out dairy. She is a DAN doctor. Hope this helps.
