Inactiveokay i need some desperate advice. I feel like i am going to go crazy, well i already am crazy, im popping extra prozac to deal w/this

i am determined to get my dd on the right formula. she is currently on enfamil. the doctor told me that this was okay since she is not having diarrhea. but she is having constipation and her reflux is still there. tonight she went into sandifers mode and she hasn’t done that in a few weeks. she also had formula come out of her nose(which is nothing new) and then the blood came. is this not normal or what??? not alot of blood but it’s still there. she doesn’t have a cold.
1. i heard that reflux is a symptom and not a specific condition. so what is it. i thought it was a immature les???
2. i called my doctor and demanded a allergy test, and they said that she was to young. so they told me to bring in a stool sample in the am so i can bring it to the lab and they can check for WBC???
3. the doctor told me she would try the nutramigin w/ her. she has already been on allimentum, so isn’t that pretty much the same thing just diff brands?
sorry about the long post and all the questions. she has been screaming all day and constantly hungry, but nibbling on the bottle. any advice about what to do would be appreciated

Inactivethe blood thing would scare me?? she spits up blood?
1. from what i think i know, reflux IS a condition. my son has GERD- gastroesophigal (sp) reflux disease. its classified as an actual disease.
2. she is too young, and besides they wouldnt be able to tell intolerance from that type of testing. the onyl think they can do is check for blood or mucous in stool. however, not all babies with milk.soy protein intolerance will have blood/mucous.
3.they are pretty much the same you are right.
did alimentum help her?i see she is on 30 mg of prevacid. if she is still refluxing and having sandifiers problems my guess would be she is mspi, and you may want to try neocate.
my son was on alimentum for a while and did ok until the milk proteins built up in his system. he was on the highest dose of zegerid and he was once again refluxing and arching and screaming. i read the article about neocate on here and swithced him to neocate. the next day he was like a different baby, and the reflux was under control.
here is the article i dont know if youve seen it yet:

Inactiveim so srry! i have never heard of throwing up blood. i wonder what that means?
just to let you know, you only need a script for neocate if the insurance is paying for it. otherwise you can order it yourself from your pharmacy.October 12, 2006 at 1:01 am #15468Anonymous
Inactivethanks for the info, i can’t afford the neocate so it is going to have to be a prescription. sounds like youre son is doing great??? you never post anything that sounds like you are in distress. well we are going to try to go to bed. i have to get a ultrasound on top of all this BS in the morning b/c they think i broke my coccyx when i gave birth
oh my god trace is 5 months old as of yesterday, congrats!! if you don’t mind me asking where did you get the name trace from?? i love unique names. take it from me my middle name is morag, its gaelic cause my parents are off the boat. blah blah blah talk to you later

InactiveOH, Eileen… sooo sorry about your distress.
2 – I concure about Grace being too young for testing. We tried with Henry and are having to redo it now-poor kid

1 – I was thinking symptom too, but sometimes it’s a symptom, sometimes it’s something else. In our case it’s reflux on it’s own along with allergies as well. Unless the docs find something really wrong(which we never want) only time really tells. Henry hasn’t grown out of the reflux at 19mths so it’s probably not due to his allergy issues. The allergy issues do make it worse for him though. Did that help?
3 – Alimentum and Nutramagin are in the same family. I’ve heard that some babies do better with one over the other. Maybe because of it being a different brand? Haven’t actually looked at the ingredients or anything, but they could differ enough to make a difference.
Neocate if you end up on that may take some time to see a difference. If you don’t notice Grace getting better immidiately, keep on it. Sometimes it takes a few months even. Give it a good trial.
Blood out the nose??? Now that would freak me out. I suppose if she has blood in her digestive track due to intolerance/allergy issues, it could come up the other way and anything in the throat could end up coming thru the nose. Like when milk comes out their nose.
I hope you get answers or at least relief soon! Have they done a scope on Grace yet? They do biopsies of the stomach and do some sort of allergy testing that way. They even can do a lower scope at the same time and biopsie her intestinal track. It’s a lot to put a kid through. I tried to avoid it at all costs.

InactiveEileen,
I’m so sorry that you’re going through this with your little one. I have a few questions:
Firstly, did you tell your doctor that she is bleeding from the nose after vomitting out of her nose? What did they say? What colour is the blood? Is it a lot?
We once had a bit of blood come out as well, but just a bit. We were told that the tissues of the nasal passages are very sensitive. If vomit comes out forcefully, it can damage the tissue causing a tear or irritation, hence the blood. We were also told that if it happens frequently and it’s acidic, then it can irritate the nasal mucosal lining which can cause irritation and bleeding. Like I said, this is only what we were told. I would consult a doc with any cases of bleeding.
Like others have said already, reflux can happen for many reasons. One can be a structural abnormality like an immature LES or a hiatal hernia causing pressure and regurgiation. Another cause can be delayed gastric emptying where the stomach doesn’t empty frequently enough and food backs up causing the reflux. Other causes can be due to food allergies or intolerances that cause symptoms of reflux.
It can be hard to tease things out to figure out what’s wrong b/c they’re all so similar. That’s why if things don’t improve with typical measures the docs usually suggest doing some forms of testing to start ruling things out. From our experiences, for the most part, my worrying about the tests were worse than the tests themselves. That’s not to belittle them, but I found that I was so afraid of getting them done- especially the scope- but Hailey came through it fine.
As for the nutramigen/alimentum issue, you might want to give it a try. I’ve heard stories on the board where some babies have tolerated one but not the other for some reason, even though they’re essentially the same. I guess neocate is another option, like others have said.
Good luck to you.

InactiveI would be scared if I saw blood out of the nose, too. But it could just be that she’s bursting blood vessels when vomitting. The mucuous membranes in the nose can get very dry and irritated and that can lead to some bleeding. Hopefully that’s all it is.
I agree with Natalia that if she’s not getting relief from 30mg of Prevacid, it’s likely an MSPI problem. I’d ask to try Neocate.
Your signature says she’s on Enfamil AR. If that’s the case it could even be the rice starch that’s bothering her.
Good luck. I hope you find relief for her very soon.

Inactivethanks for your concern and advice. I was like a mad woman today carring around a bag of poop for a sample to the pedis office and then to the lab. i know this may sound horrible but i hope that they find something so i can get some answers. they are going to look for wbc and occult blood.
when the blood comes out of her nose it isn’t alot. i’ts just a smear and i know it’s because her mucus membranes are just so irritated by the milk. but that is just not right.
we were on allimentum and she did bad on that also.
so i am reluctant to try the nutramigen. i want her to be scoped because she is getting worse. and she is on 3o mg of precacid already and she is only 10 1/2 lbs.
i am going to get to the bottom of this if it kills me

i am tired of watching my child in pain, and have sandifers all day

InactiveEileen,
I’m so sorry for all you are going through…
We have our own problems here but I also know that others are going through much worse so I really send you some big hugs.I don’t really know enough to add a lot to what the others have said but I had the same thought about the blood out of the nose being caused by the vomit coming through there. Still, you are 100% right that you should not accept this as “normal.” Nor should you have to accept her pain as normal. Stick to your guns girl, you and your daughter deserve it!
