I don’t know what else to do and i’m going to loose it. Daniel’s last med change went horribly wrong and we’re back on Pepcid and having horrible feedings again. I mean what else can i do? After trying Zantac, Carafate, Axid, Prevacid and Pepcid it feels like we’re back to sqare one again. GI won’t increase the Prevacid dose to more than 15 mg and Pepcid to no more than the 1ml 3x day he’s currently taking and i get the feeling he’s also out of ideas. I’ve checked with a couple of more GI’s around the area and they’re even less agressive with dosing than the one we have now. I’m callling this Tuesday again and going in with the research from Marci-kids in hand. I’m going crazy and it feels like my little man can not get permanent relief and I’m loosing my mind. He has also started to sleep horrible at night. He grunts, arches his back and stretches all night long and it looks like he can’t stay asleep. We’re now on carafate 1 ml 3x day and Pepcid 1ml 3x day.

InactiveHi, sorry you are having a rough time right now. I’ve been there. Hang in there!
How long was your son on Prevacid before you took him off? My son (born in May) was on 15 mg a day and we didn’t see much improvement after a couple of weeks so the pedi upped it to 22.5 mg (7.5 in am and 15 mg in pm) and after the increase, we started seeing improvement. He weighed about 12 lbs when we went to the 22.5 mg. My son also gets Carafate 2-3 times a day. Are you giving it 1/2 hour to 45 minutes before a feeding? It also has to be given 60-90 minutes apart from other medications otherwise it interferes with them. I know that some babies get stomach cramps from Prevacid and have to go back to an H2 blocker like Axid but many babies seem to do well on Prevacid. I also know babies who have done well on Prilosec. Would your GI let him do a trial of that PPI? The most powerful PPI is Nexium (my older son was started on that when he was 4 months old) but I know that some GI’s are hesitant to prescribe it for infants. My older son’s GI and my current baby’s GI are both pretty aggressive in terms of dosing which I am grateful for. If I were you, I would push the GI on the meds issue. We also use the AR pillow (similar to Tucker sling) in my son’s crib to keep him upright and I think that is helping.August 31, 2007 at 8:11 pm #41998Anonymous
InactiveIt sounds like you are doing all the right things….if your Drs won’t be aggressive enough then it is up to us to advocate for our bubs. Maybe Prilosec may be an option as Kelly suggested. Also a couple of people have had drs from marci-kids ring their Peads…perhaps you could suggest to your pead that he ring marci-kids himself. If all else fails, go in there and cry your little heart out…that sometimes works were reasoning and good seense doesn’t
. I hope you have some luck soon.August 31, 2007 at 11:22 pm #42003Anonymous
InactiveDid you continue the pepcid while waiting for the prevacid to kick in? If not then it is basically as if your baby was on no meds at all. Prevacid usually takes a good two weeks to kick in so in the meantime you have to continue the pepcid too. As far as dose increases go, my ped wouldn’t increase Justice’s dose either so I just did it myself. I think their main concern is getting sued and my main concern was helping my baby to feel better. She never once questioned why I was going through the meds so quickly.

InactiveBack from the GI. Showed up with the printed Research from Marci-Kids and left it with him to look at. We’re back on Prevacid and this time he agreed on using Pepcid along with it which he never wanted to do before. He also suggested a formula change to Enfamil AR and that i’m not happy with. I made sure to let him know and he insisted on giving it a try anyway. He said if this didn’t work he would admit him to the hospital for further testing and get things under control.
I’m extremely worried that this formula change isn’t gonna help things and then we’ll have to deal with colic. This is the reason why we changed on the first place. I also expressed my feelings about making all these changes at once. Now DH and I are arguing since he thinks we should just go ahead and try it.Unfortunately he kept the Prevacid dose at 7.5 x twice a day and Pepcid at 1 mlX3day but he did promised to look at the research and give me a call later. Last time we were on Prevacid we tried it for a week and a half. Maybe we should have waited a bit? I just don’t know anymore.Thank you so much girls for helping out and offering your inputSeptember 4, 2007 at 2:56 pm #42152Anonymous
InactiveYani,
I’m so sorry that you’re having a hard time with Daniel. I would be hesitant to make too many changes at once, or it will be hard to know what caused the change. I would email Dr. Phillips at marci-kids and ask him to call your ped. He usually convinces docs to up the dose, but beware that if you do decide to go that route, that he usually recommends zegerid. If you think that your son is MSPI, I might try alimentum over enfamil AR. It can be really binding, and sometimes the rice causes cramping.Good luck. Also, make sure not to give the prevacid and the pepcid within a few hours of each other.September 5, 2007 at 10:44 am #42188Anonymous
InactiveHi Yani – hang in there – I’m still drawing straws with my doc too! We are now starting on reglan & still on zantac as well. i only hope nothing makes him worse! we tried to switch formula again & rustyn refused it so I didn’t push it. so frustrating – it feels so unfair to have a baby with reflux – i’m so glad we all have each other!
