InactiveGood luck, Jill. Hope everything goes well with the surgery today. Imagine how nice it will be for Aidan not to have an ear infection!! Thinking of you guys. (Take notes for me… if all goes well, we’ll be doing ours next week!)

InactiveHey guys, ty ty so much. we just got home, and I swear you’d never know that he just had tubes put in. Everything went so smoothly, it took like 10-15 mins maybe? Its funny but now he’s playing with all of his toys that make sounds like he’s never heard them before. The ENT said he had so much gunk in his ears that he was probably hearing like he had cotton balls stuck in them!!!
Hopefully it will do some good for the standing fluid even if he does happen to get another ear infection!
Lori, how is Hailey? The surgery was SO routine, I went in with him when they did his anesthia, then sat in the post op room and he was back in about 10 mins, and woke up probably 5 mins later. They gave him apple juice, something about the sugar helping him pass gas? Aparently the anestheia gives them gas? not sure about that one. HE was super cranky after wards but I think he was just really hungry-make SURE that they are going to clean out her ears before they put the tubes in, I have a friend who went to an ent who didn’t and her little boy ended up having to go in for 2 more surgeries!!! But he’s fine, like I said, ate a whole biscuit on the way home (and hasn’t puked yet, sometimes they do from the anesthia, I know I keep spelling that wrong-lol)
and ty Heather, how was Bryce’s birthday??? I loved the video of him!

Great news, Jill!! I’m so happy to hear he’s home. And that’s so cute (but a little sad) that he’s hearing his toys like he never heard them before. I hope his ear infections are a thing of the past now.December 13, 2006 at 10:34 am #20266Anonymous

InactiveGreat news! I am glad he did so well. Hopefully they will stay open and clear so the pressure and pain will be a thing of the past….

InactiveOh I’m so glad everything went so well! Sounds like it has already done him a lot of good if he’s hearing so much better!

Bryce had a fun birthday.
Thanks for asking.December 13, 2006 at 1:04 pm #20276Anonymous
InactiveThat’s great Jill. I don’t know if they plan to clean her ears out first but I’d sure hope so. I’m definitely going to ask. I have to go pick up an EMLA patch whatever that is at the pharmacy before. Did you use that? I also know that we’re not allowed in for the anaethesia here, but i’ve done that before so I’m not as scared about it. Nice to know that he’s hearing better now.

InactiveLori,
The patch makes the area were they are going to put in an I.V. numb.

Inactivehe didn’t get an iv, so I guess that’s why we didn’t get the patch! Do they do iv anesthesia there? he had gas ( I think, it was a mask so I assumed that was what it was-they did tell us but I’ve forgotten now). Funnily enough, I knew IAdan was on the short side but there were baout 10 babies around his age (under 2) in the waiting room (all there for either tubes or taking adnoids out) and he was playing with 2 little boys EXACTLY his age and he came up to one’s nose and the other one’s eyes!!! It was then that I realized exactly HOW short he is-lol no wonder everyone always looks at him funny when he walks, they must think he’s about 8 months old!!!-he is a bit cranky now that the tylenol and motrin have worn off, I’ve given more tylenol, but not the motrin yet (they gave both at once before the surgery, which kind of weirded me out but I guess I’d rather have that than actual pain meds?)

so glad that the surgery went well!! It is good to hear that you already notice a difference – let;s hope things continue to get better. Glad they did not do the IV sedation… Matthew always struggles (well 2x he has had it) with the mask and the gas but it is so quick.
Lori – must have missed it – do you have a surgery date for the tubes? Emla cream is good – we give it to matthew before any shots (ped in spain told us about it), so at least he does not feel the needle going in. I have tried it to – had to have some area treated with tons of little needles and barely noticed

Inactiveany tidbits of advice on how to get the stupid ear drops in??? I;m suposed to put 5 drops in each ear for 5 days to dry up any excess fluid, and the dr told me to have Aidan lay on his side for TEN MINS to let the drops seep in. I looked at him like he was nuts, I can’t even get the kid to sit still for 2 mins let alone lie still on one side for 10!!!!! I tried tonight and they (predictibly) leaked right out.
I used a cream like that when Austin had allergy testing (it was rx though). It worked wonders, he was pricked with about 20 needles (different allergens) and never felt a thing.

InactiveWhat about when he is sleeping? i have some ear drops to put into matthew’s ears during ear infections and just do it when he is sleeping… sometimes he turns immediately after i put them in so i have to repeat

InactiveJill, We’ve always given Sarah both Motrin and Tylenol at the same time or staggered (to prevent febrile seizures, in her case). All the docs we’ve ever seen has said that this is fine b/c they’re different meds, and that it just helps to keep a steady dose of med in their system- usually it’s slightly staggered though, but we’ve done both.
As for the IV, I assumed that they were going to do it the same way they did when she had her scope, which was start with a gas mask and then put in the IV. Now after hearing that the EMLA patch is for numbing the area, I don’t think they’re going to do the mask. That actually really bothers me, b/c we can’t go into the OR here and I hate the idea of her being restrained on the table while they try to put in an IV. Either way, I’ve learned that you really have no choice in the matter, and trying to convince them to do it another way just leaves me frustrated, and them adding yet again to Hailey’s chart that I’m a difficult and/or neurotic parent, I’m sure. Last time I got into a heated discussion with the anaesthesiologist when she told me that “Hailey is going to have to go through things in her life that are unpleasant and we can’t shelter her from all of them… moving is an unpleasant experience, are you never going to move?”. I wanted to smack her.
Good luck with the ear drops. I’m sure it will be fun when we have to do that too. Don’t know how it will work, so be sure to share any tips.
Thais, we have her surgery date for next Thurs (the 21). They squeezed her in, which was very lucky for us, especially before the holidays. Now hopefully she’ll be well enough to get it done.
