InactiveDoes anyone out there have their child on Nestle’s Good Start? My dtr., Mackenzie, is now 9 weeks old. We saw the GI. He changed her meds to Pepsid 2x/day and ruled out soy and milk protein intolerance. B/C she got HORRIBLY constipated on the soy and gassy with an introduction to prune juice, he has us weenng her back onto a milk based formula. My other 2 kids did GREAT on Good Start but I’m concerned it may be too thin for her and might aggravate her reflux. We started the process and yesterday 3 out 5 feedings were pain free. She’s on the Pepsid one week today. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks- deeslp

InactiveHow did he rule out soy and milk protein intolerance?
Is she throwing up more since you started the Good Start?
Are you using powder, concentrate or ready to feed? The ready to feed is actually thicker than the powder. My kids always did better on ready to feed with all formulas. Also, you can try thickening with cereal. My doctor recommends 1 tbs cereal to 2 ounces of formula. My son does much better with thickened formula. Rice can be very constipating and gassy, so a lot of mom’s use oatmeal instead. Just be aware that Gerber Oatmeal has some soy in it, so if she is sensitive to soy, you’ll want to use Beechnut Oatmeal.
If she is keeping her formula down, you really don’t need to thicken and most doctors would prefer that you don’t introduce cereal that early unless it is needed, but I thought I’d mention it because some babies just can’t keep any formula down unless it is thickened.
You said 3 out of 5 feedings were pain free. That’s still two painful feedings which she shouldn’t have to endure. PPI’s do take two weeks for the full effect, but if she’s still having pain during feedings after two weeks on Pepcid, you may want to talk to your doctor about increasing her dose. Many doctors don’t prescribe high enough doses for infants.
I hope things get better soon.

InactiveWe use Good Start, but have to thicken it with oatmeal since she was choking (but has always choked on the bottle).

InactiveI just changed my ds to Nestle Goodstart a week ago from Alimentium(sp?). He is doing great on it. I thought that he may spit up more on the goodstart since it is not as thick as the Alimentium. But he is doing fine and has not spit up anymore than he did on the other formula. I think it has helped him alot. He has no gas issues and it helps him poop more! We also always use the ready to feed and we also just use the regular goodstart w/o the DHA and ARA. Sometimes the DHA and ARA can cause more spit up in some babies.

InactiveColt was on Neocate and switched to Goodstart w/o DHA and ARA. We tried the DHA and ARA and it made him super gassy. He has done great but we do thicken his bottles with rice milk.

InactiveWe also use the one without DHA and ARA for the same reasons, though I wish I could use that one since I’m not nursing.

InactiveI am using the RTF w/out the ARA/DHA. I found that the ARA/DHA affected my other kids as well and Kenzie is definitely less gassy without it. She seems to really like the taste. She is on .7 pepsid 2x/day. She hadn’t been spitting up at all until yesterday. We started the good start on Sunday. After I gave her, her 2nd dose of pepsid last evening, she spit up a bit each time she burped with her next feeding and I think we lost most of the pepsid dose. As a result she was pretty uncomfortable the rest of the night and took only about 2 and a half oz with subsequent feedings. This morning she was very happy, but not very hungry.
GI dr. analyzed a stool sample and did a rectal swab which was 100% neg. for blood. At that point she was 9 days into soy formula and still had some milk protein in her system; therefore, dr. felt she was presenting signs of pure reflux only.
She’s been doing much better, so I hope we have a better day today.
Any thoughts? THanks

InactiveIs she upset when she burps/spits up or is she now a happy spitter?
Have you tried giving her the Pepcid 15 minutes before her bottle? We do this and it does help.
You can have intolerances to milk and soy without blood present – so if
you are not happy with how she seems on Good Start I’d definitely
recommend trying Alimentum RTF.May 24, 2006 at 11:27 am #8560Anonymous
InactiveWith the exception of yesterday- she never spits. with burping she was fussy, until we started the Good Start. It seems like with all the formula changing we have a “honeymoon period”. She’s great for the 1st 2 days and on day 3- she starts to show signs of discomfort and yesterday was day 3 on the Good Start
I usually give her the pepsid earlier- poor timing yesterday.
What is the difference b/n nutramigin and alimentum?

InactiveBased on your description of her honeymoon period, I would guess that
she IS in fact milk and/or soy intolerant. Both Nutramigen and
Alimentum and hydrolized formula – the proteins are heavily broken down
and easier to digest. They call them hypoallergenic but supposedly up
to 40% of babies could still react to the proteins in them – but they
are definitely worth a try. A few differences in ingredients and taste
– my DD wouldnt’ go near Nutramigen but does really well with Alimentum
RTF.She may also need a PPI instead of just the Pepcid?

InactiveI’ll have to look into Alimentum. I can’t pattern this with her- it’s so frustrating. Some feedings are GREAT and others are lousy and she’s uncomfortable. BUT she rests peacefully all night.
Any thoughts on the new Enfamil Gentilease formula? – supposedly it’s broken down as well and has only 1/4 of the lactose.
Dr. doesn’t want me changing formulas again. THinks we’ve been changing too much and we need to give her stomach a chance to adjust to something. Pepsid seems to be working well. Hoping for a good day.
