hi guys… there was someone who was asking about gripe water in one of the past posts… there is a gripe water called coliccalm that doesnt have the sodium biocarbonate thing in it. on the website it explains how that is not good for the baby, and it will show you all the other ingredients.. soo if anyone is interested, and their baby has gas or related tummy issues, it might help, here is the website .. http://www.coliccalm.com
December 11, 2006 at 9:34 am #20019AnonymousInactiveWe tried the Colic Calm. It didn’t do anything for Bryce but turn his spit up black (It has some charcoal stuff in it).
That was Bryce though. It might be worth a try, especially if your baby has other tummy issues with the reflux.
December 12, 2006 at 11:09 am #20142AnonymousInactiveI ordered the colic calm, but in the end decided not to use it becuase of the charcoal…I talked with the people who make it, and they said that it needed to be used only in the most extreme colic bouts…I needed something for Brianna that could be used on more of a daily basis…I think there was something made by little tummies (they make the little noses products and such) that didn’t have charcoal or sodium bicarb in it…but when I used it I really didn’t notice much difference…good luck!
December 12, 2006 at 1:34 pm #20147AnonymousInactiveohh ok! thanks!
if i could get back all the money i have wasted trying to buy things on the internet i would probably be a millionare!
December 12, 2006 at 8:36 pm #20196AnonymousInactiveI’m hearing you Lauren.
December 13, 2006 at 9:49 am #20256AnonymousInactiveI use the kind they sell at kroger (no charcoal in it) for hiccups, works great. I guess it kind of helps with his tummy, it doesn’t hurt it!
December 13, 2006 at 1:03 pm #20274AnonymousInactiveoh jill: what is it called?! we dont have krogers here..i think that is your grocery store right? its called “stop&shop” in the north east. well, i would love to find something to give him, since he is o.k off his meds, i wanted to give him something to just calm his tummy especially since he still gets the hicups a lot and is teething like crazy( a lot of drool). soo i thought the colic calm would have been great. can anyone tell me whats bad about the charcoal? (even though it sounds bad).
December 13, 2006 at 3:21 pm #20293AnonymousInactiveit’s called Wellements the bottle just says gripe water for colic on the front (and has a baby’s profile on the left).
it says no alcohol or sucrose, the ingredients are: sodium bicarb, organic ginger, organic fennel, organic chammomile, fructose, glycerin, Citric acid (but it has never bothered AIdan’s reflux) and water.
Yep Kroger is the grocery store, it’s weird I’ve never been able to find it anywhere else here!-oh it’s also gluten free, and certified vegan and organic (which explains why the stuff is 10 bucks for a little bottle) LOL funny I never actually read the label that closely before!!!
It also has to be refrigerated and aparently only lasts for 6 weeks (it says the potency will decrease after that). I think it smells just nasty so I always add it to Aidan’s bottles!
December 13, 2006 at 5:55 pm #20301AnonymousInactiveohh i think the sodium bicarb isnt too good for reflux, i remember reading that in a post. i cant recall why though. hmmm and i am not sure why the charcoal isnt good either, can anyone answer that??
thanks though jill, i feel like you can never win, and there is always something negative to a positive (medicine wise).
December 13, 2006 at 6:34 pm #20307AnonymousInactiveo.k so i found one called colic-ease, no sodium bicarb and no charcoal… but i cant order it , because i have ordered about a 1,000 different things for Shane online, and none of worked, and i think my husband will kill be if i order one more thing!
December 13, 2006 at 7:28 pm #20312AnonymousInactiveLOL I remember when, in a desprate attempt to soothe my older son’s gas attacks when he was a newborn, I ordered an oil thing online that promised to “soothe the tummy by seeping into the skin” ummm yeah, not so much, it was just lavender oil and the thing that soothed his tummy was me RUBBING it !! (he smelled nice though). I have no idea what’s up with the charcoal, I never even knew most brands had it in them!!
you know the main ingredients in gripe water are ginger and chammomile, maybe you could fine those and give them to him to see it they would help? I now ginger helps tummy issues and chammomile soothes pain (or something don’t quote me on that!). My mom used to give me chammomile tea when I was little and fussy (very diluted tea, now I guess she’d buy caffeine free!!)
December 13, 2006 at 9:50 pm #20333AnonymousInactiveya, there is also fennel that is good for them.. i went to a homeopathic doc. and he gave me a bunch of herbs to make a tea out of ( fennel, nettle, catnip, danelion, and licorice) would you guys do it?? i am a little nervous to give him so much.. maybe i am overthinking it, and it really isnt a lot? what do you guys think?
December 13, 2006 at 10:00 pm #20334AnonymousInactiveand i found this about the charcoal on the coliccalm website..
should i believe them or no? ugh, its coming in the mail, and i dont know if its safe… on the colic ease website, they say chacoal isnt safe expecially for babies. ugh.
“We use a small amount of pharmaceutical grade activated charcoal, the purest form of carbon, and the building block element of all living things. In fact, carbon comprises 18% by weight of the human body (70% is water). The FDA rates activated charcoal as a universal antidote Category I (safe and effective). Long recognized as being particularly helpful in providing relief for gas in the digestive tract, physicians and regulatory agencies also acknowledge charcoal’s amazing absorptive properties. Charcoal is used in hospitals throughout the U.S. in relatively large concentrations to absorb and neutralize drugs and poisons in people of all ages and conditions of health.
Europeans and Native Americans have used this “universal antidote” for centuries. The first use for digestive upset of this amazing remedy dates back to Egyptian Papyrus of 1550 B.C., in fact. Mother Nature has yet again supplied us with the simplest and most elegant solution to the age old enigma of colic. Since necessity has proven time and time again the mother of invention, it was only a matter of time before a suffering parent discovered this novel application.
It is important to know that absolutely all of this vegetable form of carbon which we term “activated charcoal” passes out of the body system fully, naturally and easily … taking along with it the gases and toxins it has collected on its journey. It is without rival as a cleansing agent and in assisting the healing process of the body, as shown by numerous medical studies (see gripe water information page). Indeed, our gentle formula provides the safest and most effective gripe water for relief of colic and gas pain available anywhere…and babies just happen to love the taste!”
December 13, 2006 at 11:34 pm #20339AnonymousInactiveHi Lauren, my sister-in-law used to quickly dunk a chamomile tea bag into the boiling water when she was making up bottles for my neice. She swears by it. I probably would have given this a try if I hadn’t got everything sorted with the pead early on.
I don’t know if I would do the one with the charcoal or not- its kind of in the companys best interest to say it is safe etc so they sell it. There is never an easy answer . I wonder if you can get a refund if you decide not to try it?
December 14, 2006 at 8:38 am #20348AnonymousInactiveyep i can. thanks… i guess like i said before i just want something natural to give him to help ease any tummy issues from all the teething and when he get the hiccups and just to calm it because he still has reflux. i am just not sure if i should try the herb medly that he gave me or not. the regular docs wont really condone it, because herbs are never proven safe except for like chamomile or something that gentle i guess. hmmm…..
