InactiveHi,
I have looked on this board on and off for a while, but I really have to see if anyone else’s baby is doing this. Megan is my 4th baby with reflux so this sin’t my first time dealing with this. She also has asthma like my other three. Well, ever since I started solid food, she has just thrown everything up. I have tried straight rice cereal in all different consistencies, Gerber bananas, apples, pears, and carrots. She will eat a spoonful and then a moment later she will just fountain it up and lose it all. I have never seen this before. She has had an upper GI Barrium swallow, which was all normal. She is on 2ml of Prevacid twice a day and it is controlling her reflux and other than throwing up the food she is symptom free. She has been having a hard time with the asthma lately and has been on Prednisone for 21 days with Xopenex, Atrovent, and we just added an antibiotic to help. I am not sure if this is from the reflux or the asthma, or a combination of both. Any insight would be helpful so thanks in advance!

InactiveMyles was a huge puker and he frequently did what you just said….puke up everything in his stomach after a bite of baby food. I think it was partially due to an extreme gag reflex, which is common in reflux babies. Sometimes it was just his reflux; he puked constantly with or without gagging. He finally outgrew reflux at 9 months but the gag problem persisted for a few more months.
How long ago did you start solids? Before or after all of the meds? If the meds are making her feel queasy at all it would probably worsen her gag reflex, so it could be a combination of things.
I hope it gets better once she’s done with some of her meds.

InactiveI am sorry to hear that Megan is spitting up her solids. You know, I think there really is not any reason to rush into solids if this is happening. My mom told me I didn’t eat ANY solids until I was 15 months old! She said I screamed bloody murder every time she tried to put anything in my mouth
. Maybe you could take a break from the solids for a while?February 2, 2007 at 5:22 pm #23884Anonymous
InactiveBryce does this too. At almost 14 months, he’s still unable to eat solids without throwing up everything he’s eaten at some point. I think like Emily said, it might be worth just holding off on solids for now and trying again later. She might need more time for her system to mature.
Hope things improve for you soon.

InactiveThanks everyone for your replies! It was reassuring to hear that other babies had done this too. She has been on her meds almost since birth and keeps her formula down (lots of huge spitting up but after RSV last Nov I KNOW what a full bottle thrown up looks like!) I too agree that I will wait. I did try rice cereal a few times at 4 mos. Then because of the RSV, time in the hospital, and her asthma being so significant I took a break until about 6 mos. Now I only try every so often and no luck yet. I made an appt with her GI at the children’s hospital, but of course it is March 6th! I also somewhere missed her 6 mos appt and vaccinations with her ped. So I made that appt and got in a couple days after the GI doc. The antibiotic seems to be helping slightly so far with the asthma, not sure if it will kick this but it is giving her horrible diareah so she has been a bit more formula. Over all she is definitely not hungry and sometimes go all night without a bottle! Just wondering, but does anyone else’s baby have reflux with asthma? It seems the two are linked in our family and one impacts the other so much I feel like I am constantly losing the battle on both ends. I question myself like is her asthma not getting better because her reflux is in fact not being controlled enough? She is such a super good baby it is often decieving. She was smiling at the doctors the day she was admitted to the hospital completely dehydrated and almost needing a machine to help her breathe. Any input or info on anyone who thinks the two are linked in their baby would be interesting.
Thanks,
Brianne

Inactivemaybe i would lay off the pears and carrots as well.. even applesauce.. all of those seem to flare of my sons reflux… not sure why the carrots but i have heard of those being a hard food for other relfluxers as well.
but i wouldnt stress over the food either, as long as she is getting all of her formula, i think its o.k for a while longer.

InactiveSorry I can’t comment on the reflux/asthma link. But I guess any medications or mix of meds can upset the stomach- but then I suppose that wouldn’t explain why it was just solids not the milk…
But in terms of the vomit- Alana maybe did this the first maybe 5-6 times we tried and she has never been a spitter really. I have been told that they can do this until they work out the whole swallow thing. The same thing can happen when going from puree to mash. It could take a while longer for some to overcome the gag reflex and get the whole swallow?
I’m not sure how long this has been happening for your little one- I’d agree if it is more than a few occasions maybe to wait a little while. But if it has only been one or two time maybe give it a few more days? It sounds from your post that it is more, know I have gone up to re-read it…
Also, I wonder about consistency- some babies just don’t like runny puree (like the pre-prepared baby foods), have your tried more mashy so she has to move it around in her mouth (Alana definately prefers it to be more thick- well veges anyway- she loves to slurp fruit of the spoon so we make it runnier). And as for rice cereal- I think I would chuck if I had to eat it

I also have a thing for mango- it might just be coincidence but it was absolutely the first thing Alana swallowed and is still her first love- it might be the sweetness I suppose- but the consistency- I only mash it seems to work for her. Are mangos big in the US- of course they are over here during summer.
Well I ramble…I’m at work and trying to avoid it….Goodluck
