InactiveHi Ladies,
We are pretty much at our whit’s end right now…Harrison is almost 6 1/2 months old and it still feels like we’re lost.He was on solutabs, we had to keep upping his dose and he’d still have breakthrough acid, cramping, and gas. His last dosing was 45mg (3x 15mg).We moved him over to Buffer Babies with Prilosec OTC 11 days ago. Since he was on 45mg Prevacid, I was giving him about 40-42mg of the Prilosec. The first 2-3 days were a little questionable, but then he was good. Dr. P said the first few days to a week might be rough since he’d be getting used to it. He was on that for 6 days until our Zegerid rx came thru from the insurance. He’s been on Zegerid for 5 days (since Wednesday), and he’s also had a sinus infection (poss. also ear) and on antibiotics for the same amount of time. I’ve been giving him 36mg (12mg 3x/day) per his rx, and he’s now harder to get down to sleep. We once again have to rock him vigorously only to have him jump awake as we try to put him down, or just not go to sleep at all. He had been doing great at night at least 50% of the time, but last night he woke up around 3 and just did not want to go back to sleep. I finally got him back down and he slept from about 4:30-7:30. Today he did not nap at all until we got him in the car after 12 (up for almost 5 hours when he normally takes a 20min nap every 2-2 1/2 hours). He’s also been drinking less, about 1/2 his bottle, particularly the bottles following the Zegerid dose. But, then the other bottles he may drink the whole thing or he may want even more.He went down before 7 tonight, and in the 2 1/2 hours he’s been up 4-5 times already. When he drinks his bottles, particularly those following the Zegerid, but some others too, he will take some, pull away, want it back, pull away, want it back. THis could go on for like 1 hour. He’s not arching, though. I’m not sure if he’s just really interested in everything and everyone else around him (which he is), or if he’s just not hungry (he’s ALWAYS been a HUGE eater), or if it’s reflux. He’s not really very cranky, and doesn’t seem to be having typical reflux symptoms. Is his dose too low? Is he having reflux, but not the side effects like on the solutabs, so it’s not as painful? Is the dose too high and making him not be able to sleep? Is it NOT the reflux at all and something else? He’s had the sinus infection and has been on antibiotics for a few days, though, shouldnt that be getting better? This is his 3rd sinus infection since the week before Christmas, maybe it’s not improving on the amoxicillen…Would the same things be happening on the Prilosec OTC w/ BB if he was still on that since they’re both Omeprazole or should we just go back to that and pay the out of pocket to have our happy baby back? I plan on emailing Dr. Phillips next with his take on it.THanks for reading this far. We know this could be worse, but it feels like we have had a newborn for 6 1/2 months, all while trying to also care for our 3 year old and lead normal lives. I’ve been able to take a long maternity leave, but that’s ending in a few weeks. I don’t know what I’m going to do then!!ANY input would be appreciated!!February 1, 2010 at 7:45 pm #65720Anonymous
InactiveSo sorry to hear about the hard time. It’s so frustrating! Hard to know what’s going on because he’s sick right now. Maybe once the ears and sinus gets sorted out, you’ll have a better idea. Hopefully the antibiotics will help. Also, I’d try a probiotic. I’m not sure how long to give the zegerid before going back to the buffer babies. All I can say is that I know how you feel. I thought I was going to go insane while going through the whole thing with Hailey, and trying to deal with Sarah who was only 1.5 years at the time. Hang in there! Hopefully when he’s feeling better, things will improve! HUGS.

InactiveWell, my little guy’s problem (this time) is his ears again. Seems he developed an ear infection while on the amox and his other ear/sinuses didn’t improve, so they put him on a diff. antibiotic. He’s been good during the day for the most part, but now is really gassy at night. He keeps waking up crying, squirming, arching, crunching, passing gas. Could this be from the antibiotic now?
I know things could be much worse, and I’m so sorry to those that it is worse, but I am so tired of this, and not sure how much more I can take. 6 1/2 months of sleep deprivation/disruption, he’s had many more bad days than good. He’ll improve for a few days, then reflux will start up again or he’ll get a sinus or ear infection & seems like reflux is worse too. I feel like I’m practically ignoring Dagney through this all, and that kills me too. I know it’s not his fault and he’s in pain/uncomfy, I just want it to be better!Ok, sorry for the rant, but I needed to let it out…February 4, 2010 at 12:03 pm #65739Anonymous
InactiveDenise, so sorry to hear he’s still having a hard time. It could be from the antibiotic… they throw the whole GI system for a loop, I’ve always found. You don’t have to apologize for ranting- that’s what this site is for!! I remember how awful it was- feeling like it would never end and like you’re ignoring your other child. I wonder if he’s having the sinus/ear infections because he’s refluxing into his ears and nasal passages? That’s what did it for Hailey. She used to have vomit go into her nose. It was so sad.
I’m not sure what other suggestions to offer, I don’t really have any wisdom. But hang in there. I remember all too well how awful the sleep deprivation was.February 4, 2010 at 3:38 pm #65742Anonymous
InactiveDenise which antibiotic did they put him on? Depending on which one it could very well be the problem. Have you gotten any probiotics yet? I am so sorry you are going through this. I went through probably 9 months of no sleep with Cooper and 16 months of not sleeping through the night, so I understand how tired you must be. Don’t worry about Dagney… she will be fine in the end and understand that you love her and that Harry just “needs” you more right now. I feel like I am ignoring Cooper at times now too, but he seems to understand. They are pretty smart kids and I am sure she will be fine. HUGS and I hope you guys get these ear infections under control so he can start feeling better.
