Hi, I’ve not been on in awhile. I have a DS 2 1/2 yrs old, was dx’d with Reflux at 5 wks of age, did Zantac, then Prilosec and still has active Reflux.
I give him 7ml of Prilosec liquid every morning, he hates it and even mixed in food. It’s getting to be a battle in the mornings that I dread each day.
At what age are they able to switch to a tablet? Maybe if I could crush it up and put into food it may not taste as bad.
Any ideas?????? I appreciate all suggestions.
Thanks!
Tess

February 28, 2006 at 2:37 pm #2668AnonymousInactiveYou should not mix a liquid compound of a PPI such as Prilosec or Prevacid with any kind of food that might be acidic, such as fruit or juice. We (the MARCI-Kids team) do not recommend the use of PPI compounds at all, as they are generally unstable and have not been tested or approved in any way. The drug in Prilosec is called Omeprazole. This same drug is available in an immediate-release form that is a liquid suspension – very easy to administer to children and infants and very stable. It is called Zegerid. If you have any questions about it, feel free to email me: [email protected].
You should definitely not crush a Prilosec OTC tablet in any way, as this removes the protective coating and will make the drug inneffective. He may be old enough to take the Prilosec tablet, but it would be better to get the capsules and sprinkle the granules over apple sauce and give it to him that way. If you chose this option or any other option besides Zegerid, you should always make sure to give him the medicine on an empty stomach and 30 minutes before a full meal.

I would rec prevacid solutabs
My ds is 2.5 and he LOVES them..he asks for more!
We pop them in his mouth in the am before he gets out of his crib…wait
30min, get him dressed etc and he is good to eat/drink etc
Zegerid is a great option as it is an immediate release form of prilosec,
but my ds wouldn’t touch it…..he HATED the peachy mint taste
It is convenient though, so if you could get samples it might be worth a
try

My Son’s Dr at Children’s Hospital is the one to tell me it was ok to crush the the Prilosec tablet and put in a little food. The liquid Prilosec is running a couple thousand dollars a year and I’m looking for something effective, safe and won’t break the bank.
I tried to find caplets, but they don’t make them and he won’t take the liquid straight, he spits it out.
Any ideas?
February 28, 2006 at 8:09 pm #2717AnonymousInactiveHi Kim and Tiffany, I will ask about the Solu-tab, is it very expensive? I’m trying to find something that works and is affordable and safe. I’d love it if I could just pop something in his mouth and have him be happy about it!
Thank you very much everyone for the input.

I am in Canada (so it might be different), but we can get capsules if we ask the pharmacist to special order them. They cost the same as the tablets. Not sure if it’s the same for you in the US. No experience with the solutab as we can’t get them over here. Good luck to you. It always frustrates me to pay out $300 a month for Hailey’s compounded losec, especially when it’s not even helping, and I know in the back of my head that it’s probably not even stable.

I never thought I’d have a baby with Reflux, didn’t know it was possible, but still working with it at 2 1/2 is especially not fun for him.
I can’t complain, it’s not the horrific cases I’ve read here and I shouldn’t complain. But I do want to fix it.
Thank you and good luck with Hailey!

It explicitly states otherwise. The only FDA approved liquid omeprazole formulation is Zegerid, and we highly recommend it. At his age, the Prevacid Solutabs might work well too, but as I said, with that form you must give it to him on an empty stomach 30 minutes before a full meal. Zegerid provides immediate relief and can be given without regard to mealtime.
