InactiveOkay, I’ve been on this website for about 5 days now and I can’t believe all the stories that are just like mine.
I’m mom to Owen 5 mo and I won’t go into the full story, but I now believe his prevacid dosage is not working. He takes 2.5ML or 1/2 tsp. at night before bed. I had it flavored because I tasted it and it is awful

He sleeps sometimes through the night, others not but is usually only up once.
He does not at all nap well and he is in daycare 3 days a week so I first suspected that it was too loud. Whe I am home with him he will wake up after an hour nap screaming, his eyes never open and after about 1 oz of neocate, is zonked again for 45min to an hour or more. I think he is having acid problems.
Also from the Marci kids website I don’t know how much he should actually be getting because he gets the compounded stuff which I don’t think is on there.
We visit the doc again April 10 and I want to be prepared with all the good info I can. We had tried Axid before, this seemed to help, and he took it better. Do they both work for the same cause?? I was giving that twice a day and now I think it may have worked better. We switched because I went from breastfeeding to Neocate due to all kinds of other issues. He was in the hospital and had a feeding tube for 8 weeks and in the end we ended up with this combo.
I will take ANY input!!
And by the way, no doc should be telling us moms that we don’t know what we are talking about! I can’t believe how much money I have paid out for my ped to be wrong!! After 4 long months we have finally had so so time for the last few weeks!!
Just had to vent that!! Erica
Mom to Griffin James 1/29/04 big eater, no problems

InactiveFrom what I’ve read here it’s not easy to compound Prevacid correctly and for that reason it often loses it’s effectiveness. Many pharmacists are not aware of this, so don’t be lulled into a false sense of security by anthing your pharmacist may tell you. Lori always explains this far better than I do. Hopefully she will see this post and give you a heads up on compounded Prevacid.
There are forms of Prevacid. There are solutabs which are tasty little dissolvable tablets. Myles was on these. Very easy to administer and they worked very well for him. The draw back is that you have to time the solutabs around meals….give on an empty stomach (so two hrs since last feeding) and then a feed 30 minutes later. This was hard for us in the beginning but as he got older and his feeding schedule became more predictable, it got much easier.
There’s also Prevacid packets and capsules. I’m not sure how the packets work, but the capsules are given by opening and sprinkling on applesauce.
More than likely his dose isn’t high enough, AND babies tend to need at least two doses a day. http://www.marci-kids.com actually reccommends 3 doses per day. You can figure out how much he’s getting now by looking on the bottle to see how many mg’s per ml the medication is. It should look like this __mg’s/ml. Then multiply the # of mg’s x 2.5 to see how much he’s getting per dose.
Axid is an H2 Blocker, basically an acid reducer. Prevacid and Zegerid are PPI meds. PPI meds work by stopping the acid producing pumps so they actually prevent acid from being produced, whereas H2 Blockers work by reducing acid once it’s been produces and secreted. Most of us have found PPI’s to be much more effective than H2 Blockers.
I hope that helps. Good luck!!
