InactiveAmy,
Maybe you guys could just hide out at your school… You know, locker-room showers, home ec. kitchens…
j/kBoth houses are really nice! I wish houses were that well-priced here. We might could actually afford to buy. We’re getting there though.

LOL Heather! Our concern with rental houses is finding one clean enough that I’d let Sarah crawl around in. She SURE won’t be crawling around my school!! It’s disgusting! I have already killed several strange bugs this season…and we call the cockroaches our class pets.

InactiveThis was facinating for me of course…not being an American. Wow the houses are so cheap over there…or is it just Salem (really you live in Salem…isns’t that kind of only really on Days of our Drearies
). Our average house price where I live is $300 000 and we are only in a regional town (a large one… but not the city). In Melbourne its like more and one study said the combined income needed to be about $100 000 dollars to get a morgate (like the avereage income in aus is about $40 000 are years. Of course this has nothing to do with reflux but I feel like I am learning so much about the US and of course tell everyone I have friends in the US who I could go an visit…not you though Amy, you don’t have a room for us
! Gee now I’m rambling…what new!April 3, 2007 at 9:32 am #29375Anonymous
InactiveYes, the houses in Salem are VERY cheap compared to other states. If we moved even an hour closer to St. Louis the price of houses become astronomical (hundreds of thousands of dollars like you all experience in your towns). Soooooooo, cost of living is pretty cheap where we’re at. But salaries reflect this as well…I would make more as a teacher if I lived in a larger city. It all balances out I guess.

Therese – if you want to visit, I can sleep in the trunk of my car and you can have the back seat.
It’ll be cozy!April 3, 2007 at 12:24 pm #29395Anonymous
InactiveOMG!! Your real estate is amazingly cheap!!! I think I need to move out there! Our part of town now has most houses going for near $600 000 dollars!!!
Great news about the sale! Hopefully you find something soon.

Inactivetherese and lori, thats kind of how it is here.. no one would really want to live in a house under 500,000. that is why we are moving to GA.. where we can get a decent one for a couple hundred.
amy, is there like leasing communites?? like condos you can move into? thats what we did when i was a kid for a couple months.. it was nice with a pool and all.

InactiveThat’s what I was going to add — your house is similar to ours but half the cost, and our area is considered inexpensive compared to most!
But, like you said, the salaries are a lot less as well.April 4, 2007 at 11:17 am #29495Anonymous
InactiveI’m so happy that you sold your house, it can very be very hard! We actually were in the same boat awhile ago. We sold our house but the house we were buying was just a verbal contract and the seller sold it from under us! So we were homeless as well, we ended up moving in with my parents which was a Godsend since Alexis had horrible reflux! Everything will work out! And usually for the better! Good luck with everything! I agree I think we need to move out by you! We are in the process of finding a new home as well, but we can’t find anything that we are looking for under $600,000! Since I’m a SAHM and only DH is working and these kids are always at the MDs office there is no way we are moving anytime soon!!!!

InactiveThat house you want to buy is soo cute…I love the yard..how fun for Sarah to paly in. I would love to live where you live…townhouses in my area sell for $500,000…forget the single family.

InactiveTherese, the houses in our neighborhood (Brooklyn, NY) go for anywhere from 500,000 to over a million $$$$$$$$$$…That’s why we’re still renting

InactiveOK…I was thinking that things were cheap over there and maybe I would make the move. Now I know otherwise

Its just so hard trying to get ahead, we are lucky with interest rates being low in aus at the moment…around 7%. Sometimes though I think we would be better of renting and investing the extra that we pay into our mortgage (which we can’t seem to make any dent in). then someone else could take care of all the repairs too

InactiveTherese – I missed your question about living in “Salem”. Every year we have a “Days Fest” where several actors from the Soap Opera come to town and we have a big hoop-lah. Well, I take that back…I think they stopped doing it a 2-3 years back…but I’m sad to admit that I attended a few of the festivals.

InactiveThat would have been super cool…I would have gone

I don’t watch it very often…but always seem to be able to keep up

InactiveJust wanted to update everyone – We are going to sign a contract on the “expensive” house tomorrow. They countered with more than we wanted but we’re limited in our options!
I really like the house and neighborhood and backyard and everything about it…except the price! We will be pinching pennies until we get the hang of how the expenses will be…but I think in the long run it’s a good purchase. We STILL don’t have a place to rent in the meantime. There will be about a month long period where we’ll be homeless. I’ve called all of the reputable rentors in town and they don’t have any houses available. Everyone else won’t do a 30 day short term lease. Soooo the hunt still continues. Please pray for us that we can find a nice clean home to stay in until this whole mess is over with. At least we know LONG term that we DO have a house.

InactiveMaybe a Hotel Suite? I know they are expensive but mabye they’d give you a break since it’s a month long stay.
