InactiveFor those of you whose kids are on table food, did you start table food by feeding them spoonful of table food, or by puting table food on the tray and let them self feed. Brian spits out table food when I use spoon to feed him, he picks up table food and self feed, but not much.
His ST asked me to put lumpy food inside his puree, which can slowly trasition him to table food, but he hates it. Do you think it will work by doing that?

InactiveSharon,
If he hates being spoon fed, why would you put the table food in the puree? It sounds like he is starting to self feed, so why not just put the table food out in small pieces (non-choking hazard size) or cut into thin strips that he can hold and bite off pieces and let him go at it. That’s how I did it for my older daughter, and that’s how we are trying to get Hailey interested as well. I really think that at this age it is rare for them to want to be spoon fed. They want to start doing it themselves, and the more he does it, the more proficient he’ll get at it. That’s just my opinion. As to adding the table food to the puree, that is actually quite a hard thing for them to master I’ve been told because they have to learn to expect varied texture inside of something smooth that doesn’t typically need chewing.

InactiveI agree with Lori – very bad advice. At Brian’s age, food on a plate that he can pick up and play with and eat is the way to go…my kids would let me spoon feed yogurt for a long time because they loved it so much, which was great as it was my daughters sole source of nutrition for a long period…seriously, she ate 3 or 4 (or more!) yogurts a day, plus random goldfish, pieces of bread, and I can’t remember what else…not much!

InactiveLori and Tricia – On a good meal (once a day) Brian eats 10-15 pieces of soft table food, but on a bad meal (twice a day) he only eats 3-5 pieces of soft table food, he will not get enough cal by eating that. He lets me spoon feed him puree, but not table food.
As putting the table food in puree, ST said just like the stage 3 food (lump inside the puree). I called OT from feeding clinic today, she said no no to that idea, and said if you try to trick him, he will hates to eat table food. OT said as time goes by, he will get more efficient with picking up the table food.

InactiveSharon,
I’m having similar issues getting Noah to eat table food. Thank goodness he still lets me feed him purees with a spoon. Once he stops letting me do that, we are going to be in trouble. Our OT has told us to give him as much purees as he will take. Then, after he’s gotten his calorie intake from the purees, put small pieces of meltable food on his tray. This way he gets to experiment. She told us not to focus on the table foods as his primary source of nutrition for right now.
Isnt it annoying how you get totally different suggestions from the “feeding experts”?!
