InactiveWell, we switched doctors-Hooray!!
She was great and we will be seeing a GI specialist in a week and a half. But until then we switched to Axid to see if it would help and be easier to take but I would say its not so we are going back to Prevacid unless the doctor will do Zegerid. Anyway, it sounds like from some messages I read that I can give Mylanta with it at the same time if its compounded so that it is instant release medication which would make it much easier to give to him. My question is Im not sure how much to give per dose. I give him about 3.5 mL perdose which is about 9-10 mg per dose( if its compounded correctly)So how much Mylanta would I use with that? Also, another question I have had is about antacids. They have a rebound effect but if the pumps are shut off they basically cant rebound, right? Just want to make sure Im not missing something. Also, some moms have said for the first couple of weeks when giving a PPI that they also use zantac. Can anyone explain how that helps because as I understand it now during that time the throat is healing and thats why you dont see the full result of the PPI. Zantac doesnt take away pain either, it only blocks acid so how does it help and would axid do the same? Wow, its amazing how just a few weeks ago I didnt even really understand what acid reflux was. Thanks for everyones help!!! Im still not getting much sleep but I really feel like soon it will all be better and that helps allot.November 3, 2006 at 1:44 pm #17148Anonymous
Inactivezanatac has to be 4 hours apart from a PPI. generally anything that stops or blocks acid prodcution will help heal the esophogus. so yes, zantac can take away pain, but for most babies it is not enough and they require PPI’.s
also, maybe you misunderstood something, but you do not add mylanta to any PPI to make it an immediate release suspension.
anything that is compounded is already an immediate release suspension.
i gave mylanta in between doses while my son was on zantac. now that he is on a high dose of PPI he no longer needs mylanta. i would usually give 1 to 2 ML of mylanta.
and also, if you are on a high enough dose of PPI, then you wont rebound, it will only help turn on more acid pumps so they can then be shut off.
if you are not on a high enough PPI dose however, then yes it can create rebound.nataliachick72006-11-3 13:45:52

InactiveHopefully we will reach the point where he will only need one medication. That will be so nice. I understand about the instant release compound which is what I have, but I read a post from joel that said you can add mylanta to an instant release compound when you take it. I just didnt understand how much to take with it. I want to take them together to improve the taste of the compounded prevacid. He is getting good at spitting it out. I guess the PPI and H2 Blockers work to give double the coverage against the acid, is that the idea with taking zantac and PPi? I just talked to the doctors office and they want to scope my little guy.I just dont know if I want him to go through that. This seems so complicated sometimes.

Inactiveusually you would give zantac for a few days until the PPI kicks in.
DR phillips told me that once your child is on a high enough dose of PPI they wont need an H2 blocker because the PPI will have shut off all the acid pumps, so there is no acid to be blocked with the zantac. there are some moms taht use it for flair ups though, but often times that is a sign that the PPI dose needs to be increased.im not sure about mixing the mylanta with a compound, i havent read about that.

InactiveI think what you read is when you are giving zegerid 40mg and are giving a low dose that you need to add mylanta for extra buffer. I have also read you can add a little to help with the taste. I would just be careful because it can cause runs. But I think its fine to help the taste of the prevacid. I will double check and see what I can find.
