InactiveHow much rice cereal should I add per ounce of neocate?
Does this make your kids constipated??
I did it during my son’s middle of the night feeding when he woke up just screaming (refluxing I’m sure) and this morning he woke up in his crib at 7:30 just coooing and happy as could be…. A very RARE moment!!

Inactivewe have to do oatmeal because the rice constipated him once he went on prevacid. i was doing about a teaspoon per ounce, sometimes even a tablespoon.
also, you should not use gerber brands if your baby is on neocate, because they contain hidden soy ingredients.

InactiveWe did 1 tsp per ounce too. What I did was alternate between rice and oatmeal or just use oatmeal to prevent constipation.

InactiveOkay, next question!!
I have been using Gerber rice cereal for at least a month now for straight feeds of cereal. I started this after his feeding tube came out and he wouldn’t take the neocate well. He really latched onto this cereal thing and takes it usually twice a day.
I have noticed no significant change in attitued, schedule, etc….. So I guess that means he is okay with the product. Is there soy in their cereal and fruits and veggies??
You guys have really done your reasearch!! I don’t seem to get any of this info from my docs!

Inactivewell then maybe soy oil doesnt bother him? i just didnt want to take that chance with my son. we use beechnut brand. i know some gerber jarred foods have hidden dairy and soy, but not all, and its usually when you get to stage 3 foods. for those reasons, we only use beechnut or earths best organic.

InactiveI’m glad to hear that he’s doing well on the rice cereal. I wouldn’t assume that he would be fine with all soy products just yet though. I don’t think the stage one or two fruits and veggies have any soy or dairy. Probably just the dinners….but I’m not 100% sure. I’ve always bought mostly single ingredient fruits and veggies and soy and dairy are not listed as ingredietns on any of them. The only mixed ones I buy is garden veggies (again no soy or dairy listed).
I guess you could call Gerber and ask them. I called them once and they were very helpful and they even sent me a bunch of coupons.

InactiveMy Pedi GI told us to do 1-2 Tablespoons per ounce of formula. The highest we ever went, though, was not quite 1 T per ounce of Necoate, or about 6 tablespoons per 8 ounce bottle. This is a lot, but since the Neocate is a lot thinner than the “regular” formulas, it doesn’t make it as thick as you’d think it would. We tried backing off the rice cereal completely, but she doesn’t seem to like the taste of the pure Neocate, so now we’re back to about 2 T per bottle, and she seems to prefer it much better.
While we were giving Dagney Mylanta several times/day, the rice cereal didn’t seem to constipate her too badly, although once we were able to lay off of it, I did notice she was having a little tougher time with it. I’ve never tried the oatmeal in the bottle as I just don’t want to throw another thing into the mix (we have formula taste/thickness and nipple issues!). I know others have said that with oatmeal you don’t need to add as much either to the bottles since it’s already thicker.
Hope this helped!!

InactiveI know this is an old post. I was just looking for info on cereal thickening. Another mom on here said her doctor told her putting cereal in their bottles can dehydrate them. I thicken my daughter’s bottles with cereal and she is on Neocate. I tried taking the cereal out too and she doesn’t seem to drink much and was refluxing and choking, so the cereal must have been helping. Did your daughter get better and we you able to eventually take cereal out of her bottles? Just wondering, I keep thinking about the dehydrated thing…

InactiveHow old is your baby? We did cereal until he was a little older and eating solids which seemed to be a big help for us. I think a TBSP per oz is plenty from what I remember. If they are wetting and having BM’s that are not hard, no worry about dehydration.
