How safe is Banadryl?

I was wondering how often and how long is it safe to use Banadryl for teething. My son started cutting one of his eye teeth (and he’s only six months old!) about 3 1/2 weeks ago. I gave him Benadryl pretty much every day (most days only once, a few days twice) for nearly three weeks until that darn thing finally popped out and he was feeling better. Now only a few days later he is cutting the other eye tooth. I’m scared to keep giving it to him, especially since it will likely be another three weeks.

What do all of you think? Have you heard of any bad side effects or problems with prolonged use? (I meant to ask the doctor the last time I was there, but as usual I had all three children with me and I could barely keep my thoughts straight trying to manage all three and talk to the doctor at the same time.)

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don’t know about the safety factor. Some people mentioned rubbing it on their gums to help with teething, but keep the baby from getting the entire dose of the medicine. I don’t know if it would help, but it might be worth a try.

Thanks. I’ll try that. He doesn’t seemed bothered by teething today, so maybe we’ll get a little break after all.

I actually wondered this too, except I wondered about giving Motrin for weeks at a time. My little girl is cutting all 4 eye teeth at once for two weeks now, plus one of her back teeth. Her gums are so swollen and she can’t sleep without Motrin. I worry about giving it to her so I try to only give it at night but still feel bad having given it for 2 weeks. I haven’t tried the Benadryl yet.

Glad to hear there is another baby cutting eye teeth early and taking forever to get them pushed through!
