how to switch from sleep feeds

[Anonymous]

Does anyone have any ideas how to do this. Since Hailey was 2 months old- now 10 months old- she has refused all bottle feeds unless she was sleeping (or 90 percent asleep). I just can’t take it anymore. It means that we can’t leave the house for more than 1 hour a day at a certain time or we’ll miss a feed. Has anyone had success switching and how did you do it. I’ve been trying to switch all along, but whenever she sees the bottle when she’s awake she just pushes away from it.

Johnny refuses the bottle, and sleep-feeding doesn’t work well on him either. However, these days he has been taking formula from the spoon (not his baby spoon, but my plastic tea spoon). He also took formula from an open cup, but because the flow as too big and quick & he got chocked, I stopped doing that. He also takes MUCH MORE formula when it is straight from the refrigerater. He loves the cold formula. In fact, he asked for the cold formula this morning right after his vomit episode! I guess the cold helps to sooth the burning feeling when he swallows. Maybe you can try this with Hailey. By the way, I put Johnny in his saucer when feeding him. He seems to enjoy feeding more this way (also the gravity may help reduce his reflux). Good luck!

I think that you may get luckier if you try to post something on the parent-2-parent.com/forum

I have kind of been looking at the posts since Yu-hua found that page on how they dealt with feeding aversions a while back. It is actually a good forum — don´t be scared by it when you go into it if you decide to. There is a lot of info on feeding aversions/tube feeding etc etc. I think it may be a good place to ask about sleep feedings and how to transition. Again, if you go into the feeding aversions forum, it is pretty intense — there are a lot of people in that forum that have been through what we are going through and they may be willing ot help. (Yu-hua, i saw you posted your intro and i think that people there were so nice. I really hope your appointment goes well and that all the replies helped you have a more informed view).

Lori, is she receiving feeding therapy? the speech therapist should be able to help with that. Think she would like a sippy cup? They let Ryann play around with different cups. She wants to drink from cups that we are using, but not her bottle at times.

Lori,Yes, parent-2-parent has a lot of information about feeding disorder and tube feeding. It’s definetely worth checking out.

Thais, thank you so much for forwarding the information. I came across this website last week and have learned a lot from the people there. I am sure the moms here will benefit from their experience as well.
