InactiveEli seems to be finally doing SOOO much better. We are currently on Nutramigen. But I really don’t think he has a milk allergy. I think we just needed to get the higher Prevacid dose and finally learn how to properly use Prevacid.
Anyways…we’ve been on it for a little over a month and I will wait a little longer, but if things continue to go well, I’d like to try to switch. How do I do it though? Do you step up back to regular (Lactose Free, Soy, Gentlease, Regular….) or just switch straight back?
And he is going to be 4 months old tomorrow, so we COULD start cereal per our ped, but do solids help or hurt reflux symptoms??
Thanks for any help….

InactiveIMO, 4 months is way to early to start solids. the academy of pediatrics recommends between 6-8 months now.
plus, refluxers have sensitive digestive systems and some people wait even longer. my son started at 9. he had no interest in solids until then, and im pretty glad.
cereal isnt really the best choice for starting solids. grains are very hard for babies to digest. i think its a good idea to start with veggies and fruits. your baby will let you know when they are ready for solids imo.
as for the nutri. many reflux babies are MSPI. if it were me, i would be in no hurry to switch to a regular formula. he may not have an allergy, but the intolerances are very common with refluxers. unfortunatley my son did well on nutrimagen for about a month until the milk proteins built up in his system. he then was fussy again, reflux was flaring up etc. so we had to switch to neocate and his symptoms subsided.

InactiveMy Cooper is on Nutramigen as well and Prevacid. We were told to switch to Gentlease on Monday, but I am going to wait until he is 6 months old. Personally if things are going so well, why stir things up. IF he does have MSPI he won’t outgrown it until 6-9 months. And if he doesn’t, Nutramigen isn’t going to hurt him. I struggled with switching and I decided to wait until he is 6 months old. I may wait even longer depending on how things are going. I am just happy to have a happy baby and I don’t want to mess things up. Those are just my thoughts.

InactiveTHe AAP book I got and my Peds say you can start solids from 4 to 6 months. Dylan couldn’t tolerate any solids until after a year old, but Carter was good and ready at 4 months, so I think it just depends on the baby…..

that is outdated information.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) acknowledges that there are no “strict” age guidelines on introducing solid foods to your baby. However, the AAP, along with the CDC and the WHO do recommend that you offer nothing but breast milk and/or formula until you baby is at least 6 months old.
This ensures optimal nutritional exposure and may stave off food allergies amongst other issues. Further studies have shown that an infant’s gastrointestinal tract has not or may not have matured enough to properly digest/utilize solid foods until around 6-8 months old! IMO, babies are being fed way too young, when they arent ready. this increases the chance for allergies and other digestive issues. i just dont see what the rush is.

InactiveHi MOM2EliNBEN,
Our PEDS still recommend the 4-6 months if the baby is formula fed as well as Yale Children’s Hospital but as I said I think that ALL BABIES ARE DIFFERENT and what works for one might not work for another.
I think it is important to try what you think your baby is ready for and then not be afraid to stop or try something different if it is not working.
Good Luck!

InactiveWe were told by our ped GI that most babies (90%) will outgrow their MSPI between 6-9 months and then most others by 12months. I am just going by what I was told.

oh i see. yes, we were told that our son would outgrow his reflux at 6 months and that he would outgrow mspi at 12. unfortunately none of that was true.

InactiveNatalia…
Have you tested to see if he has outgrown it? either by yourself or checking for true allergy vs intolerance with a specialist?
Im just curious, since with my son (non-refluxer) we messed up big with him, with the gluten free diet we switched before testing, and then messed up his celiac tests as they have to be eating it…
that said, my 3 yr old just got cleared on dairy and soy from his allergist, so I know they take longer than 12 months, but after 12 months we were told to check every 6 months with trials at home…
Im hoping with Audrey she will outgrow it all soon….shes still only neocate as shes FPIES, but Im hoping by 15 months to try food again, and hidden dairy….after her skin tests and rast tests of course.

Inactiveno i am not doing testing. he has intolerances…. not allergies. they would come back negative. and it wouldnt change any treatment plans anyway. i know which foods affect him, and i know which foods to avoid…..
the other day my mom fed him broccoli which had butter all over it. he was screaming all night long. thrashing around. it looked like a scene out of the excorcist. he cried for 4 hours straight. i cried too, because i couldnt do anything to calm him down. he has been fussy since then. his intestines are infammed and need to heal, so for now i am doing neocate only.
