InactiveChloe has been doing well with her reflux, but now I am not so sure. She got her two bottom teeth a couple of weeks ago and was sometimes a little fussy but overall did well. However the last few days she has been very volatile. She will be happy and then cry uncontrollably for 5, 10, 15 minutes. Some things that I think could be contributing or responsible are: Several more of her bottom teeth look a bit swollen. We have been challenging dairy now for about three weeks in my diet. She also has been working on her crawling like crazy the last few days (so much so that she has figured out how to crawl backwards
(Yay!).
She has been making a lot of wet sounding burps and I have noticed an increase in her reflux noises. So many things could be responsible that I am not sure what it could be. I want to lean towards the crawling just stirring things up but I don’t want to make things worse by staying on the dairy (but oh am I enjoying yogurt (more than I ever did!).
What does everyone think?chloe’s mom 2007-3-31 7:23:27 March 31, 2007 at 9:55 am #29128Anonymous
InactiveHmmmm…..that’s a tough one. I definitely could see teething as being the problem. Two of my babies were miserable teethers and for them teething seemed to be pure torture. But I can’t help being suspcious of the dairy trial. I’ve read here many times that it can take several weeks to build up enough proteins in the body to get a reaction from the baby, so it seems like it’s possible that the dairy could be just starting to build up enough to bother her.
Have you tried Tylenol or Motrin? Maybe try that a few times and see if she gets some relief. Then maybe you can make a safe assumption that it’s teething that’s bothering her.
Also, reflux tends to get worse with teething and her Zegerid dose is pretty low already. Maybe she needs an increase in her meds.

InactiveHi Laurie, Alana is at a similar age and has been crawling for a couple of weeks. I didn’t notice any change in regards to reflux (and we were weaning her of meds). Thats not to say it couldn’t be a factor..just wanted to let you know how it was for us. The teething might be a likely culprit…or is she coming down with something. Alana had a sore throat about a week ago and boy did she put on a few turns

InactiveTeething can be a MONSTER. it definitely was for us. As a mom dealing with protein intolerances, my personal advice would be that once you are sure her meds are appropriately healthy doses and everything is being given at the right times, etc. etc. — I would cut the dairy and see if there’s improvement. Teething is so horrible for them I would hate to think that the dairy and teething might be affecting her at the same time. You won’t know with the dairy until you take it out.
Besides the special diets and all the daily stuff we did like keeping upright, etc. etc. we used children’s motrin, children’s benadryl, hyland’s teething tablets (given way over the packaging recommended dosage), and hyland’s teething gel, all ON TOP of reflux meds. Both our specialist (ped gi) and pediatrician okayed this cocktail several times. Without giving all the details, let’s just say we had a very extreme case and the docs acknowledged that. I also have to say that I am not one of those “just give them drugs for any little thing” mom. Some mothers are very quick to suggest drugs. After my experience with reflux, food intolerances and my own son, I am quick to say that some children need appropriately healthy doses of medications to keep them healthy and help them grow. My son was one of them. If you feel the teething is very extreme, I would talk to your doctor and specialist and see if they think giving multiple teething meds is okay for her. Our docs, thank goodness, were supportive and felt that it was appropriate for the situation to give these meds in combination…but just for the duration of the teething jag….and then we’d be back to just plain reflux meds until the next tooth. Good luck!

InactiveJust an update,
I am pretty sure that it is teething since the last few nights we gave been up very frequently with a very unhappy baby but then she has been fine during the day. Once I give her Motrin she will fall asleep and stay asleep for at least 4-5 hours so I think it is the teething. The drool has arrived full force(she didn’t drool much for her first two teeth). She is also chomping on anything she can find. We’ll see how things go for a few more days and then reassess.
Thanks for the input.April 2, 2007 at 8:41 pm #29336Anonymous
InactiveSounds a bit like Alana…she has had some unsettled nights and won’t let us touch her gums and the only thing that helps is paracetomol or some medijel on the gums. Not to discourage you she has been doing that on and of for 3 months and still NO teeth.

InactiveUgh! I HATE teething! Hailey is on her last set but they’re taking forever to come in. Motrin was a lifesaver around here, and benadryl for really bad times.
