I experimented today…he's leaking poop!

So I am trying to let my poor little guy “air it out” as much as possible today because his diaper burn is so severe (it’s not anywhere on his bottom other than right around the anus). Well, he’s literally leaking poop! All those diaper changes I thought were “wet toots” is apparently an accumulation of constant leaking fecal matter (the diaper burn makes sense, now). Is this still considered “normal” for MSPI?? I just feel like there’s testing or something that should be done to rule out the possibility that something really is “wrong” with his intestines or bowels. To clarify why I’m so paranoid, I should disclose that we were 1:69 for T21 based on our NT scan results. Of course my PAPP-A was high, not low, which is inconsistent with T21, but it did concern us. Furthermore, he had an echogenic bowel the entire 2nd trimester, but I was told it had cleared up going in to the 3rd. So I guess in the back of my mind I’m worried that there might possibly be some other anomoly and not just MSPI…

I am not sure what T21 is, but it sounds like this is definitley something the GI should know about. did you call today?

Yes, I just heard back about 20 min ago from the RN at the GI office. Unfortunately he is on call all week and not in the office, so she called him. Supposedly he told the Rn to send us to the ER because he cannot wait to be seen until next week. 🙁 I’m struggling with taking a 5 week old to the ER because of the flu going around, so I’ve called my Pedi to see if he can get us in to a different Pedi GI today or tomorrow.

OK, I think I agree, if you go to an ER, they will want to do some tests… I know it is flu season and you are very right to be cautious….. In our area, they have these online clocks for some ERs (smaller ones) that have the waiting time from the time you walk in till you see the doctor, so you know if and when you want to go. My heart goes out to you! Does your LO have Downs, or was it just the chances from the testing? I am not sure if there is anything GI related with Downs or not. I am pretty good with preemies and brain issues, but have no experience in that department. It is amazing the vast array of children and amazing parents we see here at this forum!!!

I do see you are a mom of 3, so this is not your first time around babies. I think if it was my first I would have been to the ER as soon as I saw the “leaking” but I think I probably would have called too if it wasn’t my first that had that issue. I don’t know what I would do now. If they can get you to a GI in the next day, then I think I too would wait, but if not, I think I would go the ER route and maybe call first and explain you have such a young baby so you need to go right into a room even if you have to wait to see the doc?

I would wait to see if you can get into the dr. (a diff’t ped GI) tomorrow… if you can’t, then I would take to ER tomorrow (probably not tonight @ this point in the day IMO).

Do you have a children’s hospital nearby that has an ER? I would do like Ann Marie said & call ahead…

As far as the odds based on your NT scan (& I do realize you have other reason to be worried/concerned but…) – my odds for Down’s with my current pregnancy – totally based on NT scan was 1:5. Remember that these odds are purely based on the thickness measurement & although that can *indicate* chromosomal &/or heart issues , most resolve themselves. Since you had further ultrasounds, etc you know that though ;). I do think you should get this looked at (especially since your ped GI agreed that he needs to be seen) – but I did want to chime in re: the odds thing b/c it’s so misleading in many cases.

i never knew there were numbers connectected to the odds of a baby having downs—i just know that my test came back abnormal–which freaked kevin out, but the doc had already warned me that it was going to come back as abnormal.

as far as whether or not there are intestinal issues with downs, there is a higher cahnce of having celiac disease with downs.

I personally wouldn’t worry about the test results from your triple screen- there are false positives all the time. It’s not normal to leak poop, though not necessarily a devastating problem, could just be serious diarrhea, but you have to be careful nonetheless. I would try to go to an ER where they fast track infants- I don’t blame you for being scared. Sometimes your GP can call to let them know that you’re coming (at least in Canada) and get you in faster.

Well, I have a frustrating, quick update. My son’s pedi (now former pedi) has given his formal diagnosis as “colic/fussy baby”. Whatever. I’m not stupid and am very familiar with colic, as are most of my friends with more than one kiddo. Every single one of them also says, “There is something wrong; that is not colic – he is in pain.” I will say that he was an arrogant jerk, and it was everything for my hubby to bite his tongue during the visit.

So we have some decisions to make today. If he’s the same or worse, we will seriously consider the ER with a phone call ahead, and if he is a little better, we will follow up with the GI next week when he’s back in the office (apparently he’s one of the best).

For those of you that asked, yes, we have a local Children’s Hospital (I believe in the top 100 in the country if my memory serves me) which is where I would take him (and where his GI doctor is on call this week). Not sure if they’ll move us out of the waiting room, though…even with a prior phone call. Hopefully we won’t have to find out!

Anyway, thanks for the support, I appreciate it.

P.S. Thanks for reminding me that I shouldn’t let the NT scan or echogenic focus on the bowel worry me at this point; it doesn’t even matter in the scheme of things. 🙂

Glad to see an update and I was thinking of you guys this morning! Sounds like you have a good plan, and I would agree that your Pedi is not right. He actually sounds like………, well, I think we can all use our prior experiences to come up with a good word to fill in the blank!

Hang in there and keep us updated with what happens. It would be great if you could call his office and let the nurse know if you are going to the ER where your GI is on call, he will be able to pull more strings, and maybe just admit you guys so you go right to a room and bypass the ER all together….. I am pretty pushy with the docs though, sometimes good, sometimes bad, but might get you seen without even seeing the ER at all….
