Inactivemy ds is on the similac sensitive ( lactose free ) and has been doing great. we started solids a few weeks ago with no problem. hes been having rice cereal in his bottles since 7 weeks old, but beechnut only cause gerber seemed to upset his tummy, also oatmeal seemed to upset it too. heres my problem, my husband accidently bought the similac sensitive r.s, which is the lactose free thickened with rice starch. i figured no problem since he usually has rice cereal anyways and fed it to him yesterday and today. well for the last 4 hours hes been fussy and crying and miserable. i thought at first it was teething, but i dont see any cutting through and nothing helps. i dont thinks its solids cause there is no diaherrea, constipation, vomiting, rash…just some redness around anus and some nasty smelling b.m. Is there a difference between the rice starch and the rice flour that he usually has??? im at my wits end here, i tried to call similac to find out and they are closed…i cant find anything on the net…you guys are my last hope

InactiveI’m definitely not an expert on this topic but I can tell you that nothing surprises me anymore about the way different babies react to different formulas. It seems logical to assume that if he eats rice cereal with no problems, then rice starch should be fine, but I’ve read so many accounts of baby’s reacting to subtle differences in different formulas that in your shoes I would definitely assume it was the AR formula and I’d immediately go back to the original formula that he was doing fine on.
Another thought….did you continue feeding him rice cereal in addition to the AR formula? If so, it could just be too much rice and starch for his system.Your ticker says he’s on Alimentum. When did you change to Similac Sensitive? It can take a few weeks for milk proteins to build up enough to cause problems.I don’t know much about it but I’ve read here that a red ring around the anus is a sign of some kind of intolerance. How long has he had that? What solids is he on besides rice? He’s awfully young. Most docs suggest waiting six months to start solids.July 26, 2007 at 9:41 pm #39928Anonymous
Inactivehes had the red ring since birth, it just gets darker sometimes. hes been on the lactofree for about about 6 weeks now , i just havent changed my signature yet. Yes he did have rice cereal in additon to the formula, i didnt even think of that. The doc put him on solids 2 weeks ago at 4 months cause he was drinking 40 oz of formula a day. something my husband just told me though was he gave him a whole jar of bannanas today, i havent been giving him those cause he didnt seem to like them and when i read the back it has citrus acid in it. His tummy is pretty sensitive, no allergies but cant handle powder formula, oatmeal. gerber rice cereal…ect… plus ive only been letting him have like 2 or 3 spoonfuls of food a day with his cereal. im wondering now if it might be the bannanas..because of the citrus acid and the large amount he gave him, the rice starch or too much rice!! or maybe all of the above
my poor baby!! I keep reading different things, some say bannanas are the best for reflux babies and others the worst. Im guessing its not the fruit that is bad but the citrus acid the babyfood adds…am i right? Hes been doing so good for the last month since he was put on medicine and i started the lactofree…i cant believe i did this to him
has anyone else had this problem with the bannanas?? I wonder how long it will take to get out of his system?? I think ill just stick with things that just say the veggie/fruit and water only. thanks for the rice idea..i didnt even think of that..July 27, 2007 at 5:22 pm #39991Anonymous
InactiveI’ve heard that lots of babies have problems with absorbic acid, so that could have been it. And the combination of bananas, rice cereal and AR formula was probably just too much for him. Is he doing any better now? Have you put him back on the regular lacto free?
