InactiveI’m so sad. After Owen failed his milk trial we started with giving him soy milk. We have been very careful after we realized we didn’t go as slowly as we probably should have with the dairy, and just gave him a little on Thursday. Friday and Saturday he didn’t have any because we were away for the weekend, and then Sunday night we started with 2oz of soy with 6oz of formula in his bottles. For his cups at school we were putting 3oz soy/3oz formula. He gets two bottles a day and two cups a day, so at the very most he was getting 10oz per day of soy, but most likely he was getting between 6-8 or so. Anyway, we noticed that on Tuesday he was really super gassy, and he woke up yesterday with diarreah. I didn’t worry too much until yesterday afternoon when we picked him up from school and he had to be changed because he had diarreah again. And then this morning – diarreah so bad that it went up his back and down his legs and soaked through his clothes. Gross.
I feel so bad for him because I’m sure he’s been feeling pretty bad and that’s probably led to some of the clinginess he’s had. We decided this morning to just send formula in to school so we had to make new cups for him and dump what we had, but we just didn’t want to give it to him again. The really weird thing though is that he’s been eating soy with great success for the past 6 months at least, maybe even more. He eats a lot of vegetarian foods with soy, edamame beans when we get sushi which are just soybeans, crackers with soy – everything. It’s never been an issue. So why would he be having problems with the soy milk now?
I just feel really bad – I thought that he was doing so well and would finally be able to be a little more “normal”, but it doesn’t seem like he’s ready to make the move yet. I’m going to call his GI doctor today, but of course you guys always have such good advice and experience. Any suggestions for what we should do now?

InactiveOh Laura – I’m sorry to hear this. I know how it must feel to get your
hopes up for these trials… I feel the same way when we try solids and
keep having problems.Could there be anything else in the soy milk that is causing a problem
since he’s OK with edamame, etc? Or maybe it’s just that there’s a lot
more soy in the milk than in the other foods?Has he had allergy testing so you know whether these are allergies or intolerances?
Hugs and kisses…

InactiveOh Laura, that is a bummer since he was doing so well with soy foods. My first thought is that maybe soy is like milk and when cooked some of the proteins get broken down and perhaps more digestable? I know Seth seems to do ok with hidden dairy in foods but can not tolerate yogurt, milk or cheese. I would just do what you have done already- pull the soy milk and see if he improves.

InactiveI’m so sorry Laura. It is so hard to get your hopes up with thse things. At least now you know where the clingy behaviour is suddenly coming from.

InactiveGosh, this sounds so much like Hailey it’s not even funny!!!!! This was exactly what happened with regular milk and yogurt. At least I thought. Hailey started having what’s called “toddler diarrhea” at a year. Her stools were fine before she was a year old and then since then she has had loose stools. It was better off of milk and yogurt. I never tried soy milk although she’s eating soy foods all along. She had the same symptoms though when it initially started super loose frequent stools and she would explode out of her diaper.
I really do feel that there is an adjustment period for new foods. For our babies, their digestive systems are so sensitive that digesting 6 or even 10 oz of soy milk would be difficult and take time in my opinion. Don’t get too discouraged. He may be a little sensitive to those things yet and it might be best to just keep him on formula for now. Like I’ve said in other posts, Hailey is now consuming anywhere from 8-16 oz of milk/drinkable yogurt per day along with tons of cheese and other dairy and is fine. Her stools are still loose but nothing like before so I do think her system has matured. Her Ped GI says that she’ll grow out of the todder diarrhea by the time she’s 3.
I hope this helps.
