InactiveaVA IS ALMOST A YEAR NOW AND STILL NOTHING HAS REALLY CHANGED. wE ARE ONLY TAKING ABOUT 2 OZ. A DAY FROM A BOYYLT(ASLEEP) AND SHE WILL NOT DRINK FROM ANY KIND OF CUP. I HAVE TRIED EVERY KIND, FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS NOW. sHE EATS BABY FOOD OK- IT TAKES MORE THAN ONE PERSON AND QUITE A SHOW TO GET IT IN. sINCE SHE WON’T DRINK i HAVE TO DO THIS 6 TIMES A DAY TO KEEP HER HYDRATED. mY CONCERN TODAY IS THE FACT THAT ALL OF A SUDDEN SHE HAS STARTED TO GAG AND THROW UP EVERYTHING SHE EATS. sOMETIMES SHE JUST GAGS ON THE BABY FOOD AND OTHER TIMES ON THE FINGER FOOD WE TRY. sHE HAS NEVER BEEN A REFLUX BABY WHO SPITS UP A LOT. tHIS IS A NEW THING AND VERY FRUSTRATING. i THOUGHT THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO GET BETTER AND EASIER, IT JUST KEEPS GETTING WORSE.

InactiveShells,
I’ve been wondering about you lately since Ava and Hailey are nearly the same age. I was hoping that the fact that you hadn’t posted recently was a sign that things were better. I don’t really have any advice for you since we’re in the same boat- still sleep feeding. Except Hailey doesn’t take solids either.
As for her gagging, might she be teething or coming down with a cold. Sometimes we’ve noticed that the extra saliva makes Hailey gag. Hope that things improve for you guys soon.
How is she doing in general?

InactiveDoes Hailey eat anything, and how much does she take asleep? I have considered the teething, she is getting some teeth in right now. She is going to have 14 teeth by the time she is one- isn’t that wierd?!! She has gained a little weight, not a lot, but now that she has started spitting up so much I am afraid to weigh her. Is Hailey gaining weight? I put formula powder and canola oil in her food everytime I feed her. She gets about a Tablespoon of oil a day-GROSS. I think it has helped with the weight gain though. We ose Goodstart too, thickened with rice. I have been so excited about the one year bday, now I am wondering if it will ever change?? Does Hailey drink from a cup or straw or anything?

InactiveWow…14 teeth!!!! Hailey has ONE tooth- that’s it! As for her eating, she eats 12-15 oz of 30 cal/oz formula a day (all sleepfeeds). She sometimes has stretches where she takes around 5 baby spoonfuls of puree twice daily, but then has stretches where she won’t touch it (and those tend to last for months). She doesn’t do table foods, but she will play with food (i.e. make a mess with it and throw it everywhere). Sometimes she will take a few i.e. 3 or so gerber puffs. So she definitely doesn’t take anything that I would call “eating”. At least Ava is taking solids. Hailey will drink water from a cup, but the feeding therapist told us to add a few drops of soy milk so that she won’t get stuck on only accepting water from a cup. She won’t do anything else, not milk, not formula, not juice etc. Now that we’ve added the few drops she barely takes anything but we were told not to switch back, and eventually we will keep adding more until she’s taking full strength. I too wonder if this will ever change. I know it does for most people, so hopefully it will for you too. I have a bad feeling about us. Anyhow, I hope that things improve for you guys. Try to enjoy Ava’s birthday- you deserve it for making it through the year.

InactiveHave you tried baby yogurt? When Ava had a food strike a few months ago, that was one thing that got her going. We also like to throw our food everywhere, I hate when it is time to try to eat. These two probably won’t even eat their Bday cake. Ava will stick her hands in it, look at it , put her tongue on it and then throw it on the floor or rub it in her hair. We also eat a few puffs, and she likes ritz crackers. Alos one other thing, have you tried the honey bear with a straw yet? It didn’t work for us but the therapist told us to try it. We only saw the therapist 2 times, she pretty much told us there wasn’t a lot she could do for us. I know this is a really bad habit to get into, but we really try to distract her while she eats the baby food. The Tv is on her favorite show, and either my husband or my son act like crazy people to keep her mind off of the spoon going into her mouth. Needless to say we can’t eat out in public or anywhere but home. After a year this is getting really old. I hope things improve for you, I wish I had more ideas, I guess just knowing someone else is going through the same thing(especailly for the same amount of time) makes it better.
Has Hailey ever been dehydrated? Somehow Ava has not yet- sometimes I don’t know how??
Thanks for responding- Michelle

InactiveMichelle, Hailey HATES yogurt…and believe me I’ve tried every kind. I already know that there’s no way that Hailey will eat birthday cake, but I’ve accepted that. She’ll certainly throw it all around our kitchen- if we’re lucky- but that’s about it. I’ve never heard of “honey bear”, is that a drink? We must not have it in Canada. I’m sorry that the feeding therapist hasn’t been able to help you guys. We’ve tried a few people, and we’re now working with someone who comes to the house. No real improvement yet, but I’m hoping that one day it will get better (hopefully soon, because I agree with you that it’s growing old). Have you thought of trying another therapist to find someone who can help you. I’ve found that they’re all different and it’s important to find someone where there’s a good fit. You might want to check out the link “feeding therapy” under the feedings section. A few of us with non-eaters have posted some suggestions from our therapists and we post updates when something works (or doesn’t). If it helps any, our therapist actually tells us to feed Hailey in front of the TV with distraction. She’s also big on cheering and positively reinforcing good feeding behaviour. Thankfully I haven’t noticed that Hailey is dehydrated, but her diapers are never super wet, and this morning her pee was quite yellow.
How is Ava’s reflux overall? Is she on any meds now? I really hope that things get better for you guys soon. Keep in touch.

InactiveShe takes Prevacid 15 mg. divided into 2 times a day. I really feel like her reflux is a lot better, besides the recent ggagging. The doctors say to keep her on it though. We have barely wet diapers too. The honey bear is a cup with a straw. I ordered it over the internet from a site that has all kinds of speech, feeding devices. I will try to remember the name of it- I think it was http://www.talktools.com-It is kind of a neat cup because you can squeeze the fluid into their mouths as long as you get the straw in-

InactiveMichelle – My son is another non-eater, he takes little formula (only from a broken nipple, eats solid only with distraction, but he is a lot older, he is 15 month now. I used to just stay at home to feed him all the time, but recently I fed him two meals in a restaurant with good success, because he was very distracted by the people moving around. I agree with Lori that it is a good idea to change another ST, we are going to change to the third one this week. About the gagging and vomiting, Brian does that from time to time, I found that if I push him to eat too much, he would do that to get the food out, if I stop pushing for a week or so, he gets better, so it is a behavior issue in our case.
Lori – We saw the OT from the feeding clinic last week, she suggested to put one table spoon of milk into 4oz of water, but Brian notices it and does not want to drink it, these little non-eaters are so sensitive!
