InactiveDD is 5 months (4 months adjusted) and we have been trying to start solids. We started with rice cereal, but not much interest there. Then we went to oatmeal b/c my DS (who didn’t have reflux and took to solids easily) was never too excited about rice cereal, but loved the oatmeal. Not much difference with DD.
I then tried sweet potatoes and she loved them and would eat them up. However, since she started those her sleep has really tanked. She would usually give me a 6-7 hour stretch, wake up and eat, then give me another 2-3 hour stretch. Now, she is up every 2-3 hours and will drink something if I give it to her … which I do. She seems to be gassy before/during her wake-ups. I decided to stop the solids for now and see what happens.
She has only needed Zantac for her reflux and I don’t even have her on the maximum dose her GI doc recommended so I am wondering if that is maybe the problem as well. Aside from the sleep issues, she is actually a very happy baby so that is why I am wondering if the solids are the culprit.
Anyone have a similar situation?

Inactiveshe may not be ready for solids, her digestive system might have to mature. but i bet others will have more advice. good luck.

InactiveI was kind of wondering the same thing… her digestive system might need some time to mature. Maybe you could try giving her a couple weeks, and try again. I didn’t start my boys on solids until about 6 months, and they seemed to do okay, but every child is a little different.

InactiveWell, there could be 2 things:
1. the reflux is aggravated because of the solids – it does happen – so in any case, i would get the zantac dose adjusted
2. some babies have really sensitive systems and they just need and adjustment period – they are always going to be gassy or uncomfortable for a few days on a new food. This was Matthew and we really just waited for a few days and then things got better. There is no need to feed them solids at that age, so i would just do a little bit everyday adn see what happens. Also some babies do swallow a ton of air when tehy eat from spoon and that makes them uncomfortable

InactiveShe still woke up every 3 hours last night … and drank 4 oz. each time. I think it is a bit soon for solids, especially for her, so I think we’ll just let it go for now. It is so sad, though, b/c she watches us intently while we eat.
