Infant grunting and grimacing frequently

My baby is now 4 weeks old and has been diagnosed with reflux. She is on Reglan and Zantac. She has started grunting and grimacing very often. It looks like she is having a painfull BM. It is especially worse when she is sleeping.

My question is : Has anyone else had the same experience? Any suggestions?

At first when we brought our daughter home from the hospital, we thought we had brought home a little piggie as she grunted so much. When she slept, we had to wear ear plugs as the grunting noises were so bad. As soon as we got her reflux controlled with medication, the little piggie noises went away. How long has your baby been on the medicine? Are you seeing a pediatric GI?

Has your daughter been tested for DGE? Delayed Gastric Emptying is the only reason your daughter should be on reglan. Most doctors think if you give one you should give the other but there is too much evidence to contradict the use of raglan. Reglan crosses the blood brain barrier and has many side effects.

Zantac is very weight sensitive so every time you daughter gains weight you will need to get it increased. I would suggest a PPI like Prevacid, Prilosec, Zegerid. These work by shutting off the pumps the produce acid. I am not trying to scare you but I know that so many of us had trouble with reglan and zantac. I hope you get in to see a Ped. G.I. They seem more willing to give PPI’s.

Here’s a link with information on reflux and PPI dosing. Like Katleen said, many babies don’t get much relief from Zantac and it is very weight sensitive. My middle child was on Zantac and never got any relief. My youngest is on Prevacid and it has really turned things aroud for him. http://www.marci-kids.com/

My daughter was a grunting and groaner. She did not scream much, but she was in a lot of pain from reflux. Both my children with reflux didn’t show severe symptoms until 10 weeks of age, so it’s possible that you are only seeing the beginning. Sorry. I don’t mean to be discouraging or to scare you….just trying to prevent you from going through what I went though. Just stay on top of things and don’t be afraid to insist on better meds for your daughter if she is not improving or is getting worse.

My son did the same thing! He was on meds but still grunting and looking like he was was trying to poo all the time. So much so that we thought he was backed up and constipated not refluxing. Definitely try to see a ped GI and switch to a ppi if possible. I agree on Reglan too.

Hi! When my daughter was a newborn she did the same thing. It terrified me, even when I knew what caused it. After I started and stayed on the elimination diet it went away. Plus, I would give mylicon, which I am sure helped too.

I have a 6 week old baby girl who does a lot of grunting,moning and wimpering while shes awake and during sleep.At first i thought she was pooping.Then i thought shes just a noisy baby that loves making sounds.But then the started getting worse and i knew that there was something wrong. that she was in pain even in sleep.Which she really hardly slept.Anyway!
