Has anyone heard of having a craving for ice when you have an iron deficiency?
My son craves ice. It’s the strangest thing. He stands at the freezer and just reaches up and whines till I give him a chunk. Then just can’t get enough! He’s been doing it for about a month now, so it shouldn’t be teething. I just can’t figure it out.
it’s called pica—a craving to eat non-food substances. i used to just crave to chew ice when i was anemic——drove my husband crazy. the craving is gone now that i am no longer anemic—-but i chewed through alot of ice when i was!
I’m not sure what the other signs are, but I’d take him for a blood test quickly. My doctor told me that anemia can be serious in little ones. It’s easy to diagnose and not too difficult to treat. All they do is a little finger prick to check his hemoglobin. Myles just had one. If they are anemic they will likely give him iron supplements and/or tell you ways to increase the iron in his diet.
sylvia was anemic when she was a baby—-our ped gi said that it told him she probably had a pretty good case of esophagitis. he never put her on any iron supplements. her anemia cleared up after she had her fundo, which, of course, cleared up her esophagitis.
