InactiveLike the others said, yes it’s OTC. I haven’t had the go-ahead from a doc to try it, just heard Dr. Phillips said it’s okay, but our MD wasn’t sure. But if you read the label, it’s basically just pepcid (H2 blocker) and the ingredients in tums and mylanta (antacid) so I figured it should be okay. Not sure about the dose.

Inactivei have a post out about this exact thing! GAVISCON!!
thats the answer for us! he is kind of like your son.. but not fussy at all during the day.. he just has such a hard time sleeping from non acid reflux as lori mentioned. i know its non acid because i give mylanta sooo much mylanta and it does NOTHING as you have said.. nothing at all. and i have done h2 blockers right before bed and NOTHING.. and ppi’s .. though we didnt do the maxed out dose… we did do a good amount ( i think) to expect some kind of difference and nothing. sooo.. the Gi suggested gaviscon to see if its the non acid reflux waking him up and bothering him.. and we gave it to him before 2 naps now..and he slept 3 hrs!! and NEVER slept 3 hrs. is his whole little life! 😉
BUT ..if you are comfortable with aluminum being in the ingredients than you should try it.. its not the biggest ingredient but its one of the active ones.. i am not sure how i feel.. you can check out my post about it though!

InactiveWow – that sounds so wonderful! I wonder if it would work for Caden too??? Is Gaviscon a prescription drug or OTC? Can you tell I don’t have reflux? I have NO clue where my kids got their reflux from as neither my husband nor I have reflux. I didn’t even have it during my pregnancies – well, just a little on this last one, but no burning – just the feeling of something coming up sometimes (sorry). So, everything I’ve learned about the medications, I’ve learned from reading (mostly here).
Anyway, I am VERY interested to learn more about this. Where can I find your original post on this?
Thanks so much!

InactiveNatalia,
What I’m trying to understand is if the PPIs work so well, why do so many people have to add other medicines to help their children sleep at night? Is it just because the children metabolize the PPI meds quickly, and then they are basically without meds at night?
Also, my son’s daytime fussiness wasn’t under control even with the 30 mg of Prevacid, so either he is fussy for another reason or the medication just didn’t cut it for him.
I’ve gotten my overactive letdown in control, and that has helped a lot, but he still has days where he’s really fussy, and I’m suspicious that reflux is the culprit.
So, that is the reason I am again debating putting him on some type of medication. I just don’t know which one.
I’m wondering if I should try Prevacid solutabs this time, since last time we were on the oral suspension that had to be mixed up every time, and I’m not sure he always got every white ball down, etc.
Also, I’m not convinced that the Prevacid didn’t make matters worse in a way, because he seemed to have tummy trouble from it.

InactiveOk, so here’s a question then, if I have given him Mylanta on several occasions, when he’s fussy and seemingly having reflux and have NOT noticed improvement, does that mean he is not hurting from reflux? Or, does Mylanta not help some kids?
It’s weird, because what shanesmommy said seems to fit Caden except that he is fussy during the day too, and I wouldn’t think he would be fussy from nonacid reflux, but maybe he would…it’s just that Prevacid didn’t help, Mylanta doesn’t help. So, I’m not sure what to think. I was originally going to keep pushing for different meds to try, but now I’m wondering if he isn’t really in pain, but he is just uncomfortable?
Let me see what you all think about this: Sometimes he gags and then makes a face like he is tasting something awful. He doesn’t cry when he does this, but it obviously tastes bad. Also, he coughs several times a day most days. The things he has NEVER done that I often read about are: arching back and refusing to eat, crying when put down on his back, and a few other things that would indicate obvious pain.
So, it makes it really hard for me to decipher whether he is actually in pain sometimes. He doesn’t do any of the obvious pain symptoms of reflux, except he is fussy! I’m also wondering if the main reason he is so fussy is his lack of sleep too.
Well, for anyone who has read this far, thank you, and if you have any ideas based on these things, please share them. It would be so wonderful to figure this out!

InactiveI think I’ve read several posts about mylanta not working as well as maalox and gaviscon-maybe try a search to see if you can find it? I’ll look and post it as a link if I can find one. Mylanta doesn’t work super well for Aidan. Was he ever on Zantac? Aidan takes that from time to time, he’s like Caden, silent refluxer, med free, but sometiems has a flareup or 2 (if he’s teething or sick). It really helps him at night…but it also has alcohol in it which knocks him out, I know some who get it w/out the alcohol, but Aidan takes it so infrequently that I don’t worry about it (and honestly, sometimes the sleepiness effect is good for both of us, I’ll totally admit that
)-Also, gental naturals has something called tummy soother, it’s like gripe water without the sodium bicarb, it’s just ginger, fennel and chammomile. It really helps
Aidan’s tummy settle. They sell it at Target, Walmart, CVS.etc, might be worth a try?March 29, 2007 at 7:43 pm #28958Anonymous
Inactivemaybe he is fussy from milk/and or soy?? are you on the diet or have tried it? i wouldnt cancel out the fact that he isnt in pain if he is fussy during the day..
does he sleep well during the day? maybe he could be fussy because he is tired?? shane also never did the back arching or anything.. soo i think his pain had a lot to do with the milk based formula he was on..and the reflux bothering him constantly keeping him from sleeping well.. i am not sure.. i am still trying to figure things out..
and i have the same question as you.. why would the mylanta not help at all if there is acid in his reflux?? i would really try and see if you havnt already if your diet might effect him.

InactiveWhen Adriana was on regular milk based formula she was very fussy. There were no other symptoms of a milk protein intolerance, jsut very fussy. Every time we tried to switch her back to a milk based formula she got fussy again. SO, it could be a milk protein allergy.
I just tried Pepcid Complete tonight for the 1st time for sleeping. We’ll se how it works.

InactiveI have done TED and didn’t notice a difference…
I could try cutting out just dairy again to see. It just doesn’t seem to be the problem.
Thanks everyone and have a great night
March 29, 2007 at 9:37 pm #28973Anonymous
Inactivei would try cutting out ALL dairy and ALL soy. many babies that have a milk protein intolerance also have a soy protein intolerance-hence MSPI.
look at labels and check for hidden dairy and soy-they can have different names.
good luck.

Inactiveoh yeah, and it can take up to a month to see a difference with the new diet.
March 29, 2007 at 9:47 pm #28975Anonymous
InactiveAlready did that for a month – actually it was the strict Dr. Sears elimination diet.
I will say again that I really don’t think my diet is the problem.
I appreciate the suggestion though. I’m open-minded and would consider just about anything I haven’t tried already.
Thanks!

InactiveEmily
I have just read this after replying to your PM.
A couple of thoughts
When you used the prevacid..it was the strawberry flavoured suspension?? If so did you give all of the liquid. I’m just wondering if he reacted to the other ingredients. When I used it I actually syringed of most of the strawberry liquid and just gave the beads in a small amount of liquid.
Also the PPI”s don’t shut of all the pumps so there can still be acid hanging around. Maybe it is worse at night because they are lying down and it makes the reflux worse.
The regurging sounds like reflux to me…but maybe it is non-acid and it bothers him at night because he wakes. Even if it doesn’t burn it would be annoying to have what is essentially ” non acidic vomit” coming back into the mount. Maybe the Gaviscon is worth a try?
Alana didn’t sleep through the night until she took all her formula during the day (ie 5 bottles at thats stage). The first day she fed five times during the day she didn’t wake to be fed that night. (of course as I described in my PM the meds also had kicked in at this stage).
I’m guessing poor sleep could make anyone pretty crabby during the day…actually I don’t need to guess I just need to look in the mirror
