InactiveCooper has been really difficult to put down after his middle of the night feed. It has been taking anywhere from 45-90 min to get him to settle back down and go to sleep. It takes at least 3 attemtps of putting him down in the crib to finally go to sleep. The first 2 times he will roll on his tummy and get on his knees and rock and rock and finally rock himself into the corner of his crib and then bang his head on the crib bumper!! Should I be worried, is this a self soothing technique? This has been going on for about 1-2 wks now…..Any advice or stories would be appreciated. TIA.

InactiveDoes he cry when you put him down? Is it just whining?? How much is he taking at night?? At his age I would try to wean the middle of the night feeds, unless it’s a pain issue (waking with reflux or something) Does he take a sippy?
Can you offer him just a drink from a sippy cup and put him back down?? It might take 3-4 or more nights before he gets the idea that the middle of the night is not feeding time??I always find that if my kids wake up and do the full feed, then they are more likely to really “wake up” instead of just be drowsy, get a drink go back to sleep.I know you are probably doing the middle of the night feeds for a reason, but I just don’t remember reading much about it….. Just some ideas, but he should be able to go the full night without waking–October 18, 2007 at 6:32 am #44386Anonymous
InactiveI feed him for 2 reasons: 1: he is really hungry, you can hear his tummy grumble when he starts eating and the formula hits it and 2: He won’t go back to sleep at certains times b/c he wants to eat. The amount varies depending on when he wakes up, usually 7-8 oz. I don’t mind the middle of the night feeding b/c it makes the a.m. meds easier as he isn’t starving when he wakes up so I don’t know that I will totally wean anytime soon. He doesn’t cry when I put him down or whine, he just is restless and won’t settle down unless I pick him back up and if I don’t pick him back up he is WIDE awake and then we are up for 2-3hrs…. I hope this is just a phase.

InactiveGotcha! I would say if he doesn’t cry, I would try to let him self soothe and go back to sleep on his own. If you are worried about him, take everything out of the crib except one blanket and he should be fine! I also have never had a bumper in the crib b/c my kids seemed to get underneath it, so I just took it out.
I’m big on my kids getting themselves back to sleep, so I don’t get too worked up about it, but if you are worried, stay up and check on him the first night?
I hope for you it’s just a phase! I need my sleep, so I feel for you!October 18, 2007 at 9:27 am #44400Anonymous
InactiveBeth,
Landen has been doing the same thing only Landen does it at 3 or 4am and tries to stay up til 5-6am.
One thing I’ve learned is that it is a phase. My 1st did this and it went on for a month or so and passed. It is so annoying. One thing I find particularly helpful for Landen is that Rainforest soother by Fisher Price. I turn it on and *sometimes* he stares at it and his eyes get tired again and he’ll drift back off to sleep. Kaden had the aquarium one and loves it still (it’s on his toddler bed-lol). You could try something like that if you don’t have one. Other than that, I feel your pain. This too shall pass! Kaden was notorious for going through stages like this just as soon as we thought he was giong to sleep good for us. He is the BEST sleeper now and has been for a while!!!jilly782007-10-18 09:28:26

InactiveJill,
We have the Baby Enstien turtle crib soother I guess it is similar the aquarium. He loves it, but it only play for 12 minutes and he likes to crawl over to it and pull up and push the buttons, so he rarely falls back to sleep. Our dog doesn’t help matters as she likes to come and “tip tap” outside the bedrooms to let us know she wants to go out, usually at 4:30am which causes him to wake up as she is on a hardwood floor. I don’t know what we are going to do. Between this and the upcoming time change I am a nervous wreck. -
