InactiveOk ladies. We’ve been dealing with Tess’ reflux for 6 months now. Things are still not good. At the very beginning we tried switching her formula from Similac to Alimentum. This was before any reflux meds. It seemed to help her lower GI gas issues but did nothing for the reflux symptoms. We went ahead and kept her on it for, oh, 2 months? Long enough to have reaped any and all benefits it had to offer which really didn’t seem like much. We were working with meds to treat the reflux then so we switched back to regular Similac. We didn’t feel we needed to be throwing so much money down the drain, IYKWM.
So fast forward to now and we’re still dealing with problems. Mostly Tess is extremely fussy and doesn’t sleep well. She is spitting up more and more these days although she never cries when she spits up so I’m not sure that the actual spit up bothers her (she’s a silent refluxer). But I find it bothersome that she’s spitting up so much. Especially when she’ll spit up food that she ate 5-6 hours ago. Shouldn’t that food be out of her stomach by then??? Anyway, I worry that she may have an allergy that we’re not addressing.
She has never had mucusy poop. She has never had blood in her poop (and we did the fecal occult blood test). She has never had any skin rashes. She has never refused food.
So could she still have a MSPI??? It sure doesn’t seem like it to me but I have lost any and all confindence I ever had in my instincts any more. It’s probably just that she needs a higher dose of Prilosec but we’re at an impass with our GI doc until our endoscopy Aug. 3. Just wondering if we should try Alimentum again. What do you guys think?

InactiveThe main problem Colt had was severe problems going poop. He would scream and cry. After switching to Nutramigen we didn’t notice any difference. Then we did a Neocate trial and sure enough he got better. When he turned a year old we did a trial of goodstart and we are still on it. Maybe the Alimentum didn’t work but maybe the Nutramigen will. I know that it works for some but not for others. Same as Neocate and Elecare. It works for one but not the other. If there is a problem the scope should show something and then you would know for sure. I would hate to say make her suffer at all but the 3rd isn’t too far off. I wish I had a better answer for you.

InactiveKathleen – So Colton was straining to poop or was constipated? Or was it “normal” but just seemed to cause him pain? Tess’ BMs were pretty normal before the reflux meds. When we went to Zantac she started having more formed BMs then with the Prilosec she got a little constipated (actually straining to poop, going less frequently, etc). But I chalked that all up to the meds. I thought mucusy poop was a big sign of MSPI but I guess you’re experience shows that that’s not a given? Thanks!

InactiveColton would strain to go and then it would shot out of him. I swear sometimes it would go 4 to 5 feet. Then there were times that he would go normal but he would scream while he was going. It sounds like you have some MSPI problems going on. I think her scope should give you the answer.

InactiveThanks, Kathleen. I wish the endoscopy were tomorrow.
In the meantime we’ve decided to give the Alimentum another try. It seems like a simple thing to do so why not. If, after a month (when we do the endo), she hasn’t improved at all on it then we’ll just go back to the Similac. We’re also just starting to introduce solids so I’m thinking that we can try some thing (prunes, etc) to help her system naturally. Thanks again!Karen

InactiveWe were considering which formula to put dd on because of her lower gi issues. DD had the mucousy poops though, but it really was the inconsistentcy between the diarrhea and the constipation. The gas was so horrible for her, she was always in distress which made the reflux get aggrevated even more. I guess it took a couple months for the minute milk proteins in the similac and alimentum to build up, and her system started to recognize them. Maybe you could do a neocate trial and see if she gets better in a couple weeks on it. It is very constipating for the first week, many moms use lactulose along with it to help move things along. Also, it smells funny and alot of babies won’t take the switch well, so mixing the formulas together for a few days and gradually making the bottle more neocate works well.
