InactiveHeather,
how do you fortified Bryce’s formula to 30kcalories safely (w/o overloading his kidneys) we have been doing the 24kca for two days now and i haven’t seem any notarious increase in wt. we have a general formula they gave us for 24kcal, but i am not sure how safe his will be for kendra if you do higher:
we got: 24kc/4.21g=5.7g then 5.7g x 5(ounces)= 28.5g added to 5 ounces of water.
28kca/4.21g=6.65g then 6.65 x 5 =33.25g added to 5 ounces of water. i am a worry ward
She also is starting to crawl, maybe she just starting burn it up faster now.

Inactivematthew was put on 28cal per ounce at 5months old… but not for all of his feeds. By the time he was 8months, we were up to 30cal per ounce for all of his feedings (except whatever he would take by mouth solids-wise).
You can ask around but i think that when you asked about using duocal in the other forum there were a ton of people who responded about high calorie formulas for the younger.
got to pack now — yeah we are leaving Baltimore finally! but i can help you with the formulas if you want later. I would try a little higher…
also – how long did you test the foods for?? just asking because matthew got immediate reactions to most but our ped told us to give it 10 days (I have posted about this before, to give his system some time to adapt) and after about 10-12 days most symptoms disappeared (however, we never had the exzema). was the best advice i got — otherwise, we would ahve never moved to solids!

InactiveThais,
thank you so much. i see what you mean about the solid. we never went past three days b/c as soon as the symptoms showed i freaked out and stopped. did Matthew have his endo b/f you tried solids or do you tried solids after it? just asking b/c the only htings that worries me the most is that she might have something else going on and the thought of making it worst keeps me up at night. Kendra has had eczema since three weeks old. wy before we started solids.

Also we are cycling the periactin and i don’t see any big decrease in appetive when she is off it for the week. She has been drinking more since we started though. just wondering if i should continue using it.

InactiveWell, Bryce didn’t go up to 30 cal until he turned one. I think most kids are recommended to go up to 30cal once their one if they are still completely tube fed. I think you’d be fine taking her up to 27cal at least. We had Bryce on that concentration when he was 1 month old fresh out of the nicu. I can’t remember – are you working with a nutritionist?

InactiveHeather,
yes we saw a Nutritionist. She recomended not to give her any solids until she gets the endoscopy done(there months from now). She advice us to start with 24kcal, if she does well, move to 26ka. she was a bit reluctant about the 28ka. the thing, kendra has been so off lately, that i can’t tell if she is reacting to the 24kcal increase or not. She was a bit constipated and i gave her an ounce of pear juice and went once, then again with loose greeneish stools. so at this point she is a puzzle. i am trying not to give her too many things right now. ah and she still has a bit of rash on her face.
oh well. thanks evreyone. you guys help me stay sane

InactiveI think I would hold off on solids too. Bryce really wasn’t able to tolerate any solids until he was about 15 or 16 months old. He didn’t have the reactions Kendra has though.
Bryce used to get really constipated and uncomfortable when we first started fortifying his milk too. That’s why we started fortifying with the goat’s milk powder. It made a world of difference. Hopefully the pear juice will help keep her comfortable.

InactiveHeather,
i know Bryce has been on breastmilk, but before the goatmilk, what were you using to fortified his milk? Kendra is on neocate. i thought it was supposd to be well tolerated.
did Bryce have a hard time sleeping/naping? Kendra doesn’t nap good (or very much) and her sleep has been horrible. well thanks.

InactiveI can’t remember all the formulas we tried, but I know we didn’t try anything like Neocate (I didn’t even know about that!), but I don’t really think it was any kind of intolerance with Bryce. I think he just had a hard time with the concentration. For some reason the goat’s milk didn’t bother him.
Since she’s on neocate maybe you could ask your doctor about Microlipids to add extra calories. We use those for Bryce now (for part of the calories) and he’s done great with them. They don’t cause constipation at all (if anything, they loosen stools). They’re just made out of safflower oil I think. You have to have a prescription for them though. Anyway, just another idea.

InactiveWell – see, Matthew has had a few endos. He had one with biopsies at 5months old when he was exclusively on Neocate and then another one with biopsies when he was eating a variety of foods.

Inactivei have posted a “happy” update about Kendra on the “hip, hip horray” forum.
Thanks for reading
