We just got back from the GI and I told him about Averi’s “posturing.” He said, “It’s sandifers.” I guess I was kind of in disbelief b/c she doesn’t have all of the symptoms. He said she doesn’t have to. So, here I am…Wanting to know how long will this last? Will it get worse? Can she outgrow it? If the meds were right would this still be happening? I just thought we were moving in the right direction w/the med change and now I just feel like giving up. Her posturing is b/c she is in PAIN…So what can I do to help her? The GI didn’t really give me anything other than “It’s Sandifers.” Any Anvice would be MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
September 16, 2008 at 4:47 pm #56729AnonymousInactiveI’m so sorry…I understand your frustration. It seems like we (parents and our LO’s) go through so much with all of this. It’s a constant roller coaster it seems like sometimes. Try one thing, better, then worse. Try something else. Is it the med, the food, teething, on and on.
I’m not sure how much help I can be, but our LO had Sandifer’s. It wasn’t until she was on the Zantact and Prevacid that the symtoms gradually disappeared. I hate her having to be on both meds, but we’ve tried weaning her off of both (at different times), but each time she starts going back to crying and grunting. As soon as those symptoms started back we put her back on her dose. Both times we never saw the Sandifer’s come back, so I don’t know if that’s because she’s older or if they would have came back if she was off the med longer?!?I didn’t get much advice from the GI either. But, like you, I knew we had to get her out of so much pain before she neck twisting, on and off the bottle/breast, arching, etc could stop. You may have already explained this before and I missed it, but does she only do it while trying to eat or more often?September 16, 2008 at 5:01 pm #56730AnonymousInactiveI’ve been wondering if she also needed an H2Blocker, but ZANTAC was BAD for Averi. So, I’ve been trying to find Mylanta Cherry Supreme w/no luck. Is there anything else that she could be given to help?
To answer your question: She doesn’t do it while trying to eat. It’s more throughout the day, but not when eating. Part of the reason I didn’t think it was sandifers at first. I thought posturing was separate from sandifers. Guess not.
Also, I’ve been trying to message you about the pillow but it keeps saying your inbox is full.September 16, 2008 at 10:16 pm #56749AnonymousInactiveMaybe you can try Axid? We just switched to Axid from Zantac…
September 16, 2008 at 10:31 pm #56752AnonymousInactiveWe have used Pepcid Complete berry flavored with success before. You have to mash up 1/2 a tablet then dissolve it with a few mls of water. I believe Jill has used the Pepcid as well. The same 4 hour spacing rules apply to Pepcid with the Prevacid.
September 17, 2008 at 1:02 pm #56762AnonymousInactiveHow has the Axid been? Does your DS handle it just fine? Jessica also suggested carafate and I’ll be calling the GIs office about it. It’s just so weird to me that Averi’s on a good dose of prevacid and yet she’s displaying symptoms of sandifers. When we first started the prevacid she was doing really well, still posturing though. Why would she regress?
September 17, 2008 at 2:13 pm #56766AnonymousInactiveThe Axid has been fine… our ped GI changed us from Zantac to Axid (our general ped put Evan on Zantac @ 2wks old). We told him we were using Mylanta + Zantac (mixed) b/c of the bad taste of Zantac. His words were: “oh, let me change you to Axid- it tastes better… Zantac has been around for 30yrs”. Anyway, it definitely tastes better. I think it’s diff’t active ingredients too (but still an H2 blocker) so maybe Averi will react to it better?!
September 17, 2008 at 2:22 pm #56768AnonymousInactiveThanks! I’ve got a call into the GI about the carafate & to discuss the DGE more. So, I’ll also ask about axid. Does the axid have to be given 4hrs from the prevacid?
September 17, 2008 at 2:26 pm #56770AnonymousInactiveYes, same as the Zantac.
September 17, 2008 at 2:33 pm #56771AnonymousInactiveThanks!
September 17, 2008 at 3:53 pm #56776AnonymousInactiveIf you can’t get an Axid script, Pepcid Complete is OTC.
