let’s be joyous!!

ok, corny title, i know. since i happen to be in a better mood this morning, i want to try and think of positive things. let’s hear what kind of things you all do during the holiday season to “keep the joy” and not get caught up in the hurry and the stress.

We light an advent wreath every sunday night…my daughter is only one, so I know she doesn’t really understand, but it forces my husband and I to take time out of the business of the holidays to remember to true reason for Christmas.

I am going to invite a new friend of mine (along with her husband and 4 year-old daughter) for Christmas dinner. They have no family in the state and will be alone. Normally I’d be a wreck about being the perfect host and preparing a perfect meal but I am going to concentrate on just enjoying their company and making their day a little merrier. I’m sure they’ll still like me if the food isn’t perfect.

Something fun that we do for the holidays is “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” We choose a family, and each night for twelve days (ending on Christmas Eve) we secretly deliver a gift and leave it on their porch. On day one, we leave one gift. On day two, we leave two gifts, etc. We just do inexpensive things, like 3 ornaments, 4 cookies, or whatever. Usually we just keep it a secret, depending on who the family is. It’s a lot of fun for our family, and hopefully brings some joy to the receiving family.

I love that idea too Heather! We take on one child for christmas through our church and really it does feel so good to give stuff to people who are less fortunate. When I was younger we were poor and a church adopted us as the family for that year and I remember people were so generous and we were so thankful!

So far no one has found out. Well – except for when we did this for my sister-in-law & her little kids one year – we told them in a note at the end.
