InactiveHey ladies! I’m not around much anymore, but I pop in from time to time to see how all the kiddos are doing. Lorrie- Ryann had a similar experience a couple weeks ago coming out of surgery for her adenoids. She completey freaked out and I couldn’t calm her for 2 hours. The nurse said it was a reaction to the “chill” medicine that adults handle fine. Kids freak out because they can’t control how they are feeling and it scares them feeling so tired and woozy. She gave me a fat lip from banging her head around. Good thing he fixed the ear tag so she doesn’t have to be put out again. Ryanns ear drum perferrated a few days ago… I asked for tubes but nobody would listen to me. I feel so bad! I’m sorry to hear about Sarah!
Thais- nice to hear about Matthew acting like a true toddler- running around the house with food! Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

InactiveWell, the ped. gave me some special cradle cap treatment, it’s by Mustela (rub it on at night wash it off in the morning), it works alright but I might try the cream b /c I think it’s itchy (the cradle cap-he’s always scratching at it).

InactiveThanks for thinking of us everyone. All in all I’m glad we got it done at this point, though I probably should have asking more questions before hand. I just heard the words “flat audiogram” and “mild to moderate hearing loss” and I freaked out and signed the consent. No one mentioned ear plugs and I didn’t think to ask many questions before hand except if she would hear better.
The good news is that her hearing got better right away, it seems, and she even started talking more when we got home. She was talking quite a bit already, but the words sounded wierd, the audiologist said that she’s probably talking the way she hears. When she woke up at home, she started repeating everything I said, and even putting two words together. I said “I’m coming” and she said it back to me with the same intonation. She basically hasn’t stopped talking since she came home and yesterday even said “let me see” and started singing to the wiggles CD in the car. I couldn’t believe it.
Unfortunately, it hasn’t helped her sleeping or eating any, and reflux is still an issue, but hoping that those went away were just wishful thinking, I know.
Thais, I’m so glad to hear about Matthew. I know what a big relief that must be with the sleeping, and the eating is such a great bonus! I know how hard you worked to get there and I’m SO happy for you. (I might email you for tips).
Heather, when we were in the waiting room, there was a girl there (she looked about 12 years old) and she had a fair-sized skin tag on her lip. You could see she was self conscious about it because she held her mouth funny so you couldn’t see it as much. I overheard her mother saying that she didn’t have it removed earlier because she didn’t want her to need surgery. I know it’s not an easy decision. Getting Hailey’s removed was actually an afterthought- I only thought about it a week before, and thankfully for us the ENT agreed to do it. He said that hers was really simple and that it likely wouldn’t need more than a stitch or two, but surprisingly he said that it was even simpler than that because it didn’t bleed at all after it was removed. He said that they kept her in there for an extra 10 minutes or so, and waited for some blood to come out, and in the end only a tiny drop came out, so they didn’t need to stitch it or even cover it. She has no idea it was ever removed.
Jill- There seems to be two schools of thought on needing the tubes, from what I’ve read (but that’s only internet reading). It seems that old school they used to suggest ear plugs after all ear tube procedures. More recently, they’ve done research that shows they’re not needed for swimming or for routine hair rinsing, but yes for deep water diving and soapy water.
Here’s one link:

Our ENT’s office sells the putty buddies, the soft silicone ones, so I assume that’s what he recommends. You just squish them into the outer ear, but they’re small and I worry about choking. Hailey doesn’t like them in there and tries to pick them out.
We got the kind of tubes that fall out on their own within 2 years we were told.
Karen, nice to hear from you. How’s Marisa doing? I’d love to hear from you guys, so feel free to email me anytime (I think you have my address).
Sarah, nice to see you around, too.

InactiveLori – yes, the sleeping is a treat! And i really think that it has helped his feeding a bit. I know we have discussed that feeding at night can decrease appettitte during the day… maybe there is some truth to it?? Because now he takes 7ounces maybe from a bottle in the morning!! Weaning was HORRIBLE. We first took out 100ml (out of 200ml) and that took one week for him to get used to. Then we did the other 100ml AND ALL HE!! BROKE LOSE. I guess he was so used to it… would cry, wake up, we had some throwing up (just watery, no food), horrible nap, crankiness…. but we stood by it (although i do think that the periactin also makes him a bit drowsy, so putting him to bed was not an issue).
Finally, he started sleeping until 5am…. now we are back to between 6am and 7am wake up times! He still wakes up 3 or 4x overnight, but just sits on his crib and whines. We have the video monitor, so that provides some light in his room… he looks around, stands up, sits down, takes a paci and usually lies down again!! I cannot believe i am writing this but he is that great overnight now!! And his first bottle is great and then after that it is hit or miss… but by 11am he is cryinng and pulling me to his chair to eat!! Then he may not take mre than 4 ounces but i think that not eating overnight has been great for him.
Anyway – that is where we are. Email me but i am going to spain for a couple of weeks and not sure i will have access to a computer this time since we are staying with my mom.
Glad t hear tubes are working… let’s see what they tell me at the ENT appointment….
Anyway – MERRY CHRISTMAS AGAIN TO ALL.. we are leaving. Hope oyu all have a wonderful holiday…. AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

InactiveLori-
I’m so glad to hear that Hailey is hearing so much better. That must be such a relief. That’s so cute that she’s been talking away since she got home.
Bryce also has a possible mild hearing loss, but I’m going to have it re-checked next month. They thought his results might have been to do with his cleft palate, so I’m hoping to see an improvement now that it’s repaired. I wish I would have asked about having his skin tag removed when he had his palate surgery – the plastic surgeon would have been the perfect person to do it. I just doubt our insurance would have paid for anything “cosmetic”, and we just can’t handle anything like that financially right now.Thais-
I’m so glad to hear that Matthew is sleeping so much better. How nice for you! Hope you have a nice trip to Spain. Have a merry Christmas!December 23, 2006 at 1:28 pm #20944Anonymous

Hooray for Hailey!! I’m so happy to hear that her hearing improved so rapidly. She’ll be a little chatterbox now!December 23, 2006 at 2:38 pm #20948Anonymous
InactiveYes, Christine… she’s getting to be a BIG chatterbox, it seems… today she must have yelled at me 5 or more times “NO, MINE!” and she’s starting to say it to Sarah too. It’s so funny to see her stand up for herself instead of letting Sarah push her around.
Thais, that’s so great with Matthew. I really do believe that as they get older, night feeding really does hinder daytime appetite. Our bodies aren’t intended to take calories in and have our digestive systems working during our sleep, and so the hormones that trigger appetite and hunger, and even growth, I would guess, don’t operate properly. That’s just my own thoughts though based on what I’ve read and studied. It’s certainly true in Hailey’s case, the only problem being that she is such a fussy eater and seems to be satiated on very little, so since we don’t have the tube, we’re stuck unless we move forward that way. It’s certainly a catch 22, but so glad to hear that it’s working for Matthew. That’s great that you were strong enough to stick it out- I know how exhausting it can be to have to extinguish night feeding habits.
During the week that she was sick and barfing everything up, I only gave her little sips of water at night, and when she woke up in the morning she was so thirsty, at the fridge crying for milk. But even then, she was happy after sucking back an ounce. I’m hoping that the GI can offer us some new ideas.
Anyhow, have a great time in Spain, and happy holidays to you too.

InactiveWell, we are in the lounge at the airport and flight is delayed which sucks… i had to take Matthew to ped today because the inside of his lips looked like had been bitten (to me at least) but it was getting worse… SO HE HAS THRUSH!!!! they gave me Nystatin (yeah right, like there is anyway in hell that is going to work). So we tried to give it to him today – threw up all over me. I guess we are just going to go to ped in Spain and get something that can get through the tube… does DIffulcan (or whatever it is called) have to be applied locally or not?? UGHH i just feel so bad for him because the ped (not our reg ped but one local one) had me look inside and all his cheeks are white and horrible and she says it hurts.
Not a dull moment – anyway… will try to log on while away

InactiveLiza had thrush at 4 months and she took Diflucan in suspension form by mouth, so I’m sure you can give it through the tube. It cleared up in just a few days. I hope you can get some for Matthew. He must be miserable. Poor little guy.
December 24, 2006 at 1:42 pm #20987Anonymous
InactiveOh no, Thais. That stinks! Hopefully you can get something that can go through the tube soon. It’s great that you have access to your ped in Spain to help you, at least.

InactiveThank you Lori and Christine… went to the pharmacy, got some DIflucan capsules… so i just empty them and put through the tube with water and the thrush is almost gone!! Going to give for another 2 days and then go see the ped next week.

Great news!!! The Diflucan worked wonders for Liza when she had thrush. I’m so glad to hear that it’s working for Matthew.

InactiveGlad that you were able to get them OTC and they helped so quickly! Hopefully he’ll be feeling better soon.
