InactiveLori–
You’re so popular, your mailbox is full.

I tried to PM you this morning, but couldn’t.
You had asked how much Prevacid Owen is on and it is 3MG/ml. He takes 2ml / day. He weighed 15 lbs 10 oz about 3 wks ago during an ear visit so I’m thinking just over 16 lbs now.
The puking was horrible today and he’s very fussy. I called into my doc to see if he will up the meds and am waiting for a return call.
I looked on Marcikids, but there is no calculation for compounded Prevacid, am I right about this?? I don’t think switching him is a good idea b/c he never takes more than 4 oz at a time and only 2 sometimes and I can never predict his eating schedule!
I also found National Pharmacy in our town that compounds meds. Don’t know how I forgot to look them up for this. I’ve been using Walgreens out of convenience….. Bad mom! Anyway, I’m going to call them today and see if they will do the every two weeks and see what they have to say about his dose.
I would like to see the article you were talking about though….. My doc is sooooooo behind, but we have somehow muddled through all of this together. He’s nationally known as tops in asthma/allergies, but really behind on this as far as I’m concerned!

Inactivei know im not Lori but…
your son is only on 6 mg per day

you also need to give at least 3.5 ml at a time in order for there to be enough buffer to prevent the drug from degrading in the stomach.
maybe try looking for another doctor. i think its really important for the dose to be right ( my son was started on 24 mg at 3 months and 11 lbs) but its equally as important to administer compounds correctly (min. of 3,5 ml at a time) and they also need to be compounded correctly. if these requirements arent met the baby will likely suffer and this can lead to feeding aversions. i would keep on being persistant and find a new doc if needed. i had to contact marci-kids and had dr phillips speak to our ped.
good luck.

InactiveHi there,
Sorry about my inbox! I haven’t cleared it yet, but will before logging off.
Sounds like your son is about 7.2 kg and is getting 6mg a day, which is less than 0.83mg/kg. That’s the lowest dosing I’ve really heard of. Most docs who are following out of date info still dose at about 1mg/kg (which is also really low). Unfortunately, the practice guideline I was talking about it currently being updated (hopefully with some higher dosing guidelines!) so that’s not really an option as the current guideline doesn’t have a recommended dose for prevacid.
You can still look at it at http://www.naspghan.org, scroll to publications, practice guidelines, I believe, but it’s not very current either. I posted an article from a search engine called “up to date” and I’ll post that link for you if I can find it.
To calculate doses according to marci-kids, it doesn’t matter what form of prevacid you put in. It will give you the same amount. So just put in his weight and see what comes up.
Getting Dr. Phillips to call your doc is always an option, but he may recommend zegerid. I would talk to him though and see what he says.
I’ll try to find the link for you. As I said, that article I found also does not go as high as marci-kids.
I’m busy now but will post back later.

InactiveOkay, thanks ladies!
I thought you muliply the MG by ml and that is the daily dose. I guess I’m really wrong!
Tomorrow I am seeing a PA, but if I don’t get anywhere with her I’m going to see my family doc. I only go there myself, but I think it’s time I give in to my laziness and move on. I was just hoping to get past a year with this whole MSPI thing and then work on the reflux!
Today has been a good day/ bad day. I’m home with him, but he took a great morning nap and is going on a 3 hr afternoon nap which is great! But!!!! He’s really small already for his age (8 mo) and the eating has been bad the past week. The solids just come right back up and it seem that any little cough and it all comes up. And then he has a big crying episode and we start over! I always worry about his eating along with the rest of you moms with small kids. The nights are the worst for sleep. After 3 hrs or so he has an episode of a lot of vomiting and usually once overnight.
When things are looking up, he will sleep 12 hrs straight~~ We’ve only had about 3 weeks (not consecutive) of that in his life, but it’s been nice when it happens!

InactiveYes, you do multiply the total MG’s per ML’s by the # of ML’s you’re giving. You’re suspension is 3 MG’s per ML, and he’s taking 2 ML’s per day, so that’s 3 MG’s X 2 ML’s which is 6 ML’s per day. A very low dose.

I hope the PA will increase his dose, and if not that you have better luck with your family doc. Good luck tomorrow!
