InactiveTaylor has such horrible gas pains and problems passing BMs which are soft but she just can’t seem to be able to do it on her own always suppositories. I want to start giving her Mylanta to see if it helps her what is the max dose she can get in a 24 hour period?

Inactivemylanta isnt really to regluate bowel movements, its for heartburn and such.
have you tried some karo syrup, it works great for my son when he gets constipated.
suppositories are bad, because you become dependent on them. maybe thats why Taylor cant pass it on her own?
and if its still soft, she may not even need anything. how long will she go before she goes on her own?but i do believe that i read somewhere on here that dr philips said you can give as much as 20 ML.

InactiveMyles has always had the same problem…..trouble passing soft stools. I only use suppositories when it gets real bad. I usually just use a thermometer to relax the sphincter and that often helps. His doctor says he will likely outgrow the problem when he is older and more active, but for now the way we deal with it is with lots of fruit, (mostly prunes, pears, peaches), Juices (fiber juice and pear juice), Flax Seed Oil, and avoiding consitpating foods (apples, bananas, rice, pasta). Even so I often have to resort to the thermometer. I think he has low motility, but I really don’t know for sure what the problem is.

I know Taylor is very young, but a little pear juice in her bottles may help. Maybe a little flax seed oil, too. I’ve been doing both with Myles since he was about six months old. It definitely helps. I forgot the flax seed oil for two days and he was plugged up for two days afterwards.
Is she on any solids yet? Cereal?
I tried Mylanta with Myles and it did not give him looser stools. The boy doesn’t even get diarrhea or loose stools on antibiotics!
I hope you figure out something to help Taylor. If you do please post it.

InactiveNo cereal yet due to her allergies we are going to try at 6 months. Myles and Taylor sure sound a lot alike. She does have the slow motility I think we discussed that together before but since they were growing MDs don’t have a concern…
The Peds GI told me to use a suppository everyday for her to help with the gas and emptying until her system does mature but I truly don’t like to do it everyday, we too use the rectal therm. quite often. Glad to know that there is someone else out there like us! We haven’t tried juice yet but I think it is time. How much flax seed oil do you use and how do you give it to Myles when he was younger? Yep, Mylanta doesn’t do much here either, I try to give her a larger dose to cause diarrhea but not luck!

InactiveOMG….her, too. I though Myles was one of a kind!

At six months I would give him 1 teaspoon of flax seed oil twice per day. Now I give him 1 tablspoon twice per day. I just gave it to him on a spoon, and then a quick spoonful of something he likes to wash it down. I did put it in his bottle sometimes but since he wasn’t drinking much back then and he gave up the bottle completely at 7 months I had to stick with the spoon method.
If you try the flax seed oil, probably get the kind without something called “lingans.” I’m not sure if I spelled that right, but my mil’s dietician said babies should not have it because it can effect hormones. Flax Seed Oil comes with lingans or without.
The pear juice I add to his formula before mixing it with his oatmeal and spoon feeding it to him. He doesn’t mind it mixed in with his nightime bottle (the only bottle he drinks). If I do that then I add one ounce of pear juice to 5 ounces of formula. I think Taylor’s probably old enough for the pear juice. I’ve read that it’s the easiest of the juices for a baby to digest.
I’m not sure why doctors aren’t concerned about the poop problem our babies are having.
Maybe they truly do outgrow this as they get older and it really isn’t a big concern. I hope so. It causes me a lot of stress, though. Myles used to have dge as well. His digestion was SO SLOW. It was pathetic. He could live on two ounces every four to five hours and he would throw up stuff he ate 4 hours ago. Our doctor said he’d likely outgrow it and he did
so that gives me hope that she is correct about the poop problem too.I hope the flax seed oil helps Taylor. It really does seem to help Myles.

InactiveAs Natalia said above, both Dr. Phillips and Joel have indicated that you can give up to 20mls of Mylanta per day…

InactiveThanks everyone!
Christine,
2-3 oz is what we live on and it takes a long time for her to even drink that. And you are right it takes four to five hours for her even to want the little amount. The GI prescribed erythromycin for her to help with her DGE but it hurts her tummy causing too much cramping so she can’t even take that to help with her slow…slow digestion! I’m glad to hear that Myles outgrew his, we are still waiting. She just doesn’t seem to like to suck on the bottle, I too feel she will give up on the bottle once she is spoon fed, hopefully she eats that way! It gives me hope to hear how Myles have progressed! Thanks for the flax seed information we will have to give it a try.

InactiveGood luck, Sue. I hope Taylor makes a complete turn a round like Myles did.

InactiveHello Sue!! Sorry to hear you are having some trouble with Taylor. Matthew has slow mobility and a lot of trouble passing really soft stools. Couple of things that i have learned from the feeding clinic (and the GI that we are seeing):
– they said babies will not get used to suppositories so i would not worry about that BUT there are more effective ways to handle poop
– mylanta IS the first choice for mobility – heard this from all feeding clinics and the GI but it is not very effective in slow mobility kids – we tried for a bit and made no difference – they always start prescribing it because it will soften the stools. At 3 months old, Matthew was allowed a maximum of 2.5ml, up to 6 times a day. No more than that for babies.
– you can ask for Miralax if you do not want to give juices (with her intake, i would not play around with volumes, but that is just me) or oil at this stage (my Gi is not a fan of oils for mobility). Miralax is a molecule that draws water into the intestines and helps soften teh stools. matthew has been taking this for a while and it is great. His stools are really really soft adn you can adjust depending on the results
Hope you find something that works

InactiveOur ped and ped GI said that it was impossible to give too much mylanta. I think that I’d probably stop at the 20 ml that Dr. Phillips recommends though.
