InactiveI was going to do a milk trial with Seth at 18 months (which he hit Sat.!) but a couple of weeks ago, we went out for ice cream and I had a brave moment and let him have a small cone of banana ice cream. He loved it but woke up with horrible reflux that night. We also had a bad experience with yogurt about a month or so ago- on about the third day of giving it to him, he threw up all of his breakfast. He is doing well though with other forms of dairy like macaroni and cheese, grilled cheeses and pizza. So, here are my questions-
Should I go ahead with the milk trial or wait? If so, any suggestion as to what kind? I know some of you recommend the 2%.
Do you think he is getting enough nutrients form the other forms of dairy where I could drop the Alimentum even if we don’t do the milk? He will only take the Alimentum from a bottle so I am trying to get him off of it if possible.
What about Pediasure? Is it tolerated well even if there are milk issues? I thought this may be a good alternative.
Thanks!

InactiveInteresting – maybe the ice cream/yogurt is just to much milk at once?
If it were me, I’d probably do a trial but go REALLY slowly – maybe
just a small cup (2-4 ounces) a day and building very slowly from
there? And I’d probably just 2% milk – easier to digest – either that
and/or organic milk?June 26, 2006 at 11:53 am #10530Anonymous
InactiveHi Tiffany –
It’s so funny that you gave Seth that whole ice cream – I was tempted to do that with Owen lately but I stopped after two bites! I wonder if that’s all it is though – just too much at once. Our GI doc said to go really slowly, and I know from some of my friends that even kids that don’t have MSPI can have reactions to dairy after having it for the first time. Add the issues that our kiddos have and I’m sure that just complicates things.
I would do the trial – it can’t really HURT – and at least then you’ll know what the story is. We actually just stopped Owen’s last bottle this weekend but we’re still giving him a sippy with alimentum before bed. We probably don’t have to do that because he drinks lots of soy milk and eats relatively well most of the time, but since he’s used to having a drink before bed we figured that we don’t really have to get rid of that at this point – plus we have some cans of alimentum left that we may as well use. Would that be an option or will he totally not touch it from a sippy? If you just stop the bottle do you think he would take the sippy after a few days?
Good luck!

InactiveIs pediasure lactose free? I know some other brands are. Maybe it’s the lactose instead of the milk protien?

InactiveI definitely thing ice cream is harder to digest than milk. I’m all for 2% milk only because that’s what Hailey was finally able to tolerate after several whole milk trials. Yes, you probably could just drop the Alimentum. It took about a month before Hailey would touch any milk from a cup. I ended up buying some Danimals (drinkable yogurts) which she loved and she started drinking several of those a day until we figured out that she would drink chocolate milk. Once you stop the Alimentum, I would put him on a vitamin. We give Hailey 1/2 of a My First Flinestones.
