InactiveHi! I haven’t posted here much, but am in dire need of help! My son is now 12 months old and still has bad silent reflux. He had an endoscopy and bronchoscopy, which showed no damage. So, they are trying to let him grow out of it. He is on 3/4 prevacid solutab twice a day.
He’s been on nutramigen formula since he was 2 – 3 months old, and could not tolerate milk-based formulas. They seemed to worsen his reflux. So, now that he is 12 months, we are trying to switch him to whole milk. For two days, I have put 1 ounce of whole milk in each bottle, totaling to 4 ounces per day. His reflux now seems to be worsening as he actually spit up today, and has been VERY clingy/fussy for the last two days. He does alright with cheese, but yogurt doesn’t agree with him either.
My question is if he cannot tolerate whole milk, and probably cannot tolerate soy, what do I put him on? Should I try rice milk? I am concerned that he will not get the proper vitamins and nutrients with rice milk. Please give any advice you can. Thanks!!
Valerie

InactiveI think I would stay on nutramigen a bit longer then. Maybe mix it half and half.. half rice milk. That way it could be cheaper. I know what its like. We had shane on alimentum and prematurely took him off. Then we couldnt get him back on. He ended up being intolerant of dairy/soy. We now do rice milk w/added olive and flax oil.. i also make sure he gets good protien during the day to make of for the lack of it. He does o.k on goats milk..not ideal..but o.k. I guess you could always end up trying that too.
Let me know if i could help anymore. 😉September 4, 2007 at 10:39 pm #42173Anonymous

Inactivekeep your son on formula. my 16 month old is still on formula, he has a bottle in the morning and before bed. i also do the occasinal almond milk with flax seed oil. and lots of avacados 🙂

Inactiveyour welcome 🙂 . the olive and flax oil is for fat. the rice milk only has 2.5 grams for fat..and whole milk has 8 grams! sooo i also do feed him avocado sandwiches. And rice milk has no protien.. maybe one gram…and whole mi lk has 8. So that is why i said i try and give him other sources through the day. ITS NOT FUN! i constantly am worrying about his intake. I am going to try and up his goats milk again though..so i wont have to worry!
well.. let me know what you decide to do! And my ped was clueless about the rice milk..but it was my ped. GI (nurse) that told me to do it. Even though she told me to do it.. i am still weary. So thats why we say you should stick with formula (at least for part of his feedings) a bit longer… but if you decide not to.. just make sure he is a good eater!! 😉September 5, 2007 at 1:48 pm #42199Anonymous
InactiveHi, my DS will be 3 in December and still can not tolerate yogurt, whole milk or ice cream (aggravates reflux). He does do well, however, with cheese and hidden dairy. We do rice milk and one Pediasure a day. The Pediasure does have some milk proteins but he has been able to tolerate it fine. We’ve been doing this since he was about 18 months or so. He was on Alimentum before but the ped. said this would be more age approriate. The ped. also said we could have tried the silk soy milk but I was scared of soy since he reacted poorly to the soy formulas. I will probably try a milk trial again when he is 3.
I used to be hung up on the fact that he wasn’t drinking milk but to be honest, it doesn’t bother me so much anymore and what we are doing is working fine.Good luck.September 5, 2007 at 7:01 pm #42215Anonymous
Inactiveohh yea..good idea tiffany.. i forgot about pediasure.. i am too scared to try it w/shane.. but maybe carter could handle it.

How long was he on the Alimentum? Until 18 months old? I am thinking that I will keep Carter on Nutramigen until 18 months, and then try something else. How many different times have you tried reintroducing whole milk? I am thinking that we will try again in six months and see how it goes. If it still will not work at that time, maybe we will do the rice milk and try the pediasure.

InactiveYes, Seth was on Alimentum (in bottles, he refused it from a cup) until he was 18 months old. I was also giving him rice milk too (in a sippy cup) at
the time but kept the bottles since the rice milk did not have a lot of protein and/or fat.I have to admit I have not been diligent about milk trials but know he is still probably not ready (drank a little girl’s milk at daycare a few months ago and had horrible reflux for a week). We are though in the process of trying yogurt again and so far so good!I think in general it is ok to trial every couple of months.Mom2Seth2007-09-06 12:48:28

InactiveOh, I see! I talked to the GI nurse and my regular ped’s nurse today, and both said to try Lactaid Milk and then Soy if that doesn’t work. So, I guess we will try and see what happens. I am not holding my breath though! I think we’ll end up on the nutramigen for awhile longer, but I have to rule out the other milks just in case one would work. Great news on the yogurt by the way~!! I am sure it helps that you can sneak his calcium/fat in that way! Thanks for the info!

InactiveWE have just seen our Paediatrician because Alana still can’t do dairy either…or soy of any kind. She suggested we stay on the Pepti Junior (like Alimentum) until she is two. Luckily it is subsidised by the government here and only costs me about $30 every 6 weeks! We are of to see a paediatric dietician to make sure she is getting enough calcium (there is about a 1/4 of the calcium in pepti junior as the same amount of cows milk!) but the fats etc should be right according to the paed. I would probably persist with the allimentum as well.

Inactiveohh thats interesting therese!! i wouldnt of thought that much! wow. is there a “2” form of something similar over there? there isnt really here.. at least i dont think…

InactiveYes, that is very interesting. I was looking for a stage 2 nutramigen, and apparently they do have one in Europe. Guess I can always try and get some of that if all else fails!! We see the ped today, and will ask what to do if neither soy or lactaid milk works. The GI nurse said that we should really try hard to get him on one form of milk as opposed to keeping him on formula. I thought that was really weird. Isn’t formula nutritionally better than milk anway????

InactiveThe paed wasn’t sure if there was a Pepti_jnr 2 or not, hopefully the dietician will know. I think the low calcium in it is because they usually take 4-5 bottles a day on it and that would make it enough calcium for an under 1. But Alana only does 2 now because she is on solids so it wouldn’t seem enough to be and I don’t think she would get the rest from non-dairy calcium. I’ll let you know what the dietician suggests.
valkay…I don’t know why they would be pushing milk not forumla if a baby can’t tolerate milk. Fair enough if they can tolerate milk but not for an MSPI bub…clearly they have no idea. My Dr didn’t even balk at continuing to prescribe the pepti-jnr and said well if she can’t tolerate it clinically (milk/soy) then we won’t force it on her. She is going to refer her for allergy testing but it will take awhile to get in and I’m not to worried about confirmation anyway at this stage.Goodluck with the Dr -
